6 The performance of organic coated steels Organic coated steel is produced by applying a paint coating to steel strips in a continuous manufacturing process compliant with EN This process is called coil coating. Coil coating is an industrial and highly efficient means of coating steel strip metals before fabrication of finished components, providing a highquality, uniform and reproducible surface finish. Coil coating represents the most efficient, the most reliable and the most environmentally-friendly way of applying a high-quality paint finish to metal surfaces and delivers products that are beautiful, versatile, durable and sustainable. The high quality of our coil coated ranges allows us to give excellent guarantee levels, many of which are automatic (applied once the product has been delivered). The properties of organic coated steel In our steel, ArcelorMittal is committed to perfecting the key features that play an essential role in the durability and aesthetics of the building: Corrosion resistance The optimum choice of metallic steel substrate plays an important role in the corrosion resistance of the final product (see 1 and 2, right). Based on more than 50 years of experience in the building sector across the entire range of European climates, we offer an extensive range of hot dip galvanised steel or equivalent metallic substrates which comply with EN standards and/or the regulations of national construction sectors. The UV resistance of the paint The right choice of the paint system and the minimum painting thickness depending on the environment contribute to the system integrity (see 3, right). The paint top layer (topcoat) gives the aesthetic effect. It filters UV radiation and protects the primer layer from photo-ageing by using the right pigments and plays an important role as a barrier to water and corrosive agents. As the topcoat is very often in contact with tools and subject to forces like friction and deformation, we ensure that our paints have sufficient mechanical properties and surface robustness to permit transport and forming operations. Flexibility and paint adhesion Flexibility and adhesion of the paint to the steel metallic substrate are vital during processing and forming operations. Respect for the environment Our Nature collection of organic coated paints are free of hexavalent chromium (Substances of Very High Concern included in the REACH European regulation Candidate List) compounds.
