3 Technical Data DESCRIPTION Nilflam is a polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam manufactured by a similar process and to the same high quality standards as Therma polyurethane foam. Whilst retaining all the benefits of polyurethane foam, Nilflam also has greatly increased resistance to burning and spread of flame plus a higher temperature limit of +140 C. Nilflam was first developed in 1968 at the Glossop factory of Kingspan Industrial Insulation Products. It has since gained a worldwide reputation in the petro-chemical, cryogenic, liquid gas processing and other industries where its name is synonymous with specifications for high quality thermal insulation in the temperature range -180 C to +140 C. The primary method of manufacture is a continuous production plant with the capacity to produce blocks of foam up to1200mm wide, in lengths up to 4 metres. The quality of the foam is continuously monitered and controlled. This method of production has distinct advantages over discontinuous block production in individual moulds, particularly with regard to maintaining consistent foam quality. Blocks of foam are converted into flat slabs or pre-formed insulation sections using modern computer aided manufacturing techniques. Polyisocyanurate foam is also suitable for the production of complex shaped moulded products such as valve and flange boxes. 2

4 AVAILABILITY Blocks and flat slabs. Preformed sections for pipes, process vessels and storage tanks. Preformed insulation for profiled architectural panels. Mouldings. Nilflam is available in densities of 32 to 50 kg/m 3 which are used for the majority of thermal insulation applications. Higher densities of 60 kg/m 3 to 160 kg/m 3 are also available. Nilflam has been tested under cryogenic conditions and independent laboratory test reports are available. CHEMICAL RESISTANCE AND COMPATIBILITY Nilflam has excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals and solvents. It is compatible with most solvent based coatings and adhesives, polyester and epoxy resin based coatings. ENVIRONMENTAL PROPERTIES Nilflam is manufactured entirely without CFC blowing agents. It provides designers and specifiers with excellent thermal efficiency which is the key to compliance with international environmental legislation. HYGIENE Nilflam is resistant to fungus and mould growth, will not sustain vermin, is non-fibrous, odourless and non-tainting. FIRE PERFORMANCE TEMPERATURE RANGE Nilflam thermal insulation products may be used for operating temperatures from -180 C to +140 C. INSULATION PERFORMANCE Nilflam products are amongst the most efficient thermal insulation materials available and retain their thermal efficiency under the most severe operating conditions, due to their closed cell structure and high resistance to moisture absorption. Products in the density range of 32 to 50 kg/m 3 have a fully aged thermal conductivity value of W/m.K at a mean temperature of 10 C. Nilflam is a thermoset material and its composition is such that when subjected to fire, its outer surface forms a strong carbonaceous layer that retards further flame spread and penetration. It does not melt or produce flaming droplets when exposed to fire, as is the case with thermoplastic type materials. 5 Technical Data MOISTURE RESISTANCE Nilflam products have a minimum closed cell content of 90% giving them excellent resistance to moisture penetration and wicking. 6 STANDARDS Nilflam rigid polyisocanurate (PIR) products comply with or exceed the requirements of the following British Standards; BS 5608:1993 Preformed rigid polyurethane (PUR) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foams for thermal insulation of pipework and equipment. BS 4840: Part 1: 1985 Rigid polyurethane foam in slab form. Specification for use in transport containers and insulated vehicle bodies. BS 4840: Part 2: 1994 Rigid polyurethane foam in slab form. Specification for use in refrigerator cabinets, cold rooms and stores. BS 5422: 1990 Method of specifying thermal insulation on pipes, ductwork and equipment. BS 5970: 1992 Code of practice for the thermal insulation of pipework and equipment. Nilflam products will comply with the appropriate BS EN European Standards as they come into effect.
