Membrane System complies with clause E2.3.2 of the Building Code when installed in accordance with this Appraisal. In other words, the product as appraised will prevent the penetration of water that could cause undue dampness, or damage to building elements. 2 Description of Product Membrane system is a durable self adhesive bitumen Self Adhesive product used for roofing or tanking or as an internal waterproof membrane, manufactured by one of the largest bitumen membrane producers in the world. The Bitustick range of components consists of Bitustick Sealbond primer or SealTAK primer for timber and Polyprime SB primer for compressed sheet or concrete substrates, Bitustick R, Bitustick R250 and Bitustick 400, and Bitustick XL membranes. Sealtec Sealpro 151 flexible sealant and Bitustick TS (detail) Tape, completes the system. Membrane system is used in place of torch-on products, as a roofing membrane, or as a tanking membrane for below grade or interior applications. Overseas service history indicates a performance in excess of 20 years with regular maintenance Trade Literature The Sealtec Bitustick Self Adhesive Membrane system Technical Manual dated August 2008 describes the correct method of installation. Applicant The applicant is Sealtec NZ Ltd. Scope & Limitations Membrane system has been appraised as a deck and roof system installed over specific designed substrates (with the limitations described in Para and of E2/AS1), smooth concrete (clean & cured for at least 7 days) and compressed fibre-cement sheet complying with AS or a specified performance requirement described in this appraisal. The deck system is to be installed on timber framed buildings built to NZS3604 or steel framed buildings to NASH 3405 and may be used in wind zones up to Very High as described in NZS3604. Membrane system has also been appraised as a below grade tanking membrane for exterior walls and for interior wet area situations. Application is to be carried out by Licensed applicators. Detailed Information Technical Description Membrane system is deemed an Alternative Solution in terms of E2/ AS1. FRAMING: Membrane system must be used in conjunction with timber framing and other components of a wall assembly that comply with E2/AS1 or in place of timber framing with lightweight steel framing that complies with NASH 3405, in all respects except as varied herein, in order to meet the Performances of the Building Code claimed in this Appraisal. SUBSTRATE: Membrane system is suited for installation over plywood substrates, smooth concrete and compressed fibre-cement sheeting. FOR BELOW GRADE TANKING: The system consists of a single application of Bitustick XL with the adhesive side towards the wall, protected using the Sealtec StarDrain system. FOR INTERNAL WET AREA TANKING: The system consists of an application of Bitustick R, or R250 or R400 with the adhesive side towards the prepared floor and upstands. FOR EXTERNAL USE ON DECKS: The system consists of an application of Bitustick XL, followed by an application of Bitustick XL or R or R250 or R400 over the first layer, with the adhesive side towards the prepared deck and upstands. APPLICATION OF TILES: Each of the above situations shall have tiles applied using a Sealtec approved tile adhesive. Approved tile adhesives are Polyfix WPA, Polyfix UTA, and Sealfix 1 Part. 3 Storage & Handling Membranes are supplied in 1.0m wide rolls x 15 m & 20m long and protected from the weather by plastic sheeting. Handling of the rolls requires care to prevent damage to the edges. Note that in cold conditions the membrane must be allowed to relax before installing to the substrate to prevent cracking of the sheet. An Alternative Solution: Membrane system has been appraised as providing an alternative solution to the requirements of E2/ AS1. E2/AS1 refers to the acceptable solution contained in the Department o f Building a n d Housing s Compliance Document for New Zealand Building Code Clause E2 External moisture, Third Edition including Amendments 1 and 2 and Erratum 1. How to install the product The product shall be installed as described in the Sealtec Bitustick Self Adhesive Membrane system Technical Manual dated August Only Licensed installers are approved to install the roofing system. [Refer to the Verification of Compliance - page 4.] Membrane system was also evaluated in practical building situations to assess the following: Ease of installing the system Potential risks of non performance when being installed Any external factors that could effect the quality of the installed product Ease of repair or maintenance (where applicable) The impact of other building products /systems when in contact Comparison with other similar Products. These assessments and tests demonstrated compliance with the requirements of Clause E2 (External Moisture) of the NZ Building Code. B2 - Durability For assessing the durability of the Sealtec Bitustick Self Adhesive Membrane system, an evaluation of Durability for the following was carried out: - The nominated primers - The nominated base membrane - The nominated top membrane - The Aluminium Roof Vent - The Stainless steel Scupper - The TS Tape - The Sealpro flexible sealant [Refer to Verification of Compliance BEAL 2008 All rights reserved. 4 Product QA Information The overseas manufactured bitumuminous membranes are manufactured to an in-house standard. The Bitustick Primer is a proprietary product manufactured to an inhouse standard. The Aluminium Roof Vent meets the requirements of Table 20 of E2/ AS1. The Stainless steel or aluminium scuppers are manufactured in conformance with AS1397. The TS Tape is a proprietary product manufactured to an in-house standard. The Sealant is a proprietary product manufactured to comply with Para of E2/AS1. All products are covered by Sealtec s Quality Assurance Programme to ensure the completed roofing system will comply with the New Zealand Building Code. Membrane system Technical Manual dated August 2008 describes the correct method of installation. Design Considerations Owner/Builder to supply and fit: Substrate Construction in accordance with the New Zealand Building code including the repair of surface defects 25mm x 25mm H3 treated Timber Fillets fitted to all wall to floor junctions on external decks / balconies and roofs. Scupper overflows and outlets (Sealtec approved only). Dripedges as per Sealtec Ltd detail drawings. Flashings, such as sill flashings, under and over flashings. Note: The membranes are also not to be installed when surface temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius or above 35 degrees Celsius. Installer to supply and fit: Polyprime SB or Sealtak primer or Sealbond primer depending on the substrate type and conditions. Sealtec Sealpro 151 and 151FC polyurethane sealant for sealing of expansion joints. Sealtec Polyrod polyethylene foam backing rod various sizes from 5mm to 50mm. Bitustick TS Detail Tape. 6 Conditions of this Appraisal 1. The Products continue to comply with the quality assurance measures of Sealtec Ltd. These quality assurance measures have been viewed and approved by BEAL. 2. The products comply with the conditions of this appraisal and with the Sealtec Bitustick Self Adhesive Membrane system Technical Manual. 3. Sealtec Ltd. continues to have the product range reviewed and quality assurance programme audited annually by BEAL. 4. The overall quality and performance of the products are maintained. 5. Sealtec Ltd. shall notify BEAL of any changes in specification or quality assurance measures prior to them coming into effect. 6. BEAL staff use New Zealand or appropriate international Standards or an ad hoc method (in the absence of a relevant New Zealand Standard) for carrying out testing and assessments. The evaluation of products is performed either at BEAL s facilities or at a nominated laboratory and carried out by experienced and qualified specialists. 7. The system has been tested against one or more of the following criteria which was applicable at the time of the appraisal: a measurable criteria described in the Building Code, or a relevant New Zealand or Australian Standard, or an appropriate requirement set out in a New Zealand Department of Building & Housing document, or expert opinion from BEAL 8. BEAL s verification of the building product or system complying with one or more abovementioned criteria is given on the basis that the criteria used were those that were appropriate to demonstrate compliance with the Building Code at the date of this appraisal. In the event that the criteria are withdrawn or amended at a later date, this Appraisal may no longer remain valid. 9. This appraisal will be reviewed within five years. In the event that there are changes, this appraisal will no longer be valid.
