1 SECTION PAINTED PAVEMENT MARKINGS PART 1 - GENERA 1.1 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: Painted traffic striping and symbols on pavements and curbs. B. Related Documents: The Conditions of the Contract and Division 1 apply to this section as fully as if repeated herein. 1.2 REFERENCES A. The editions of the specifications and standards referenced herein, published by the following organizations, apply to the bituminous concrete paving work only to the extent specified by the reference. Refer to Section for information concerning availability and use of references. Standard Specifications: State of California, Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) Standard Specifications, May 2006, referred to herein as "Standard Specifications". 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: Submit certificates of compliance, manufacturer's specifications, and general recommendations for paint and reflective glass beads. B. Shop Drawings: For pavement markings. 1. Indicate pavement markings, colors, lane separations, defined parking spaces, and dimensions to adjacent work. 2. Indicate, with international symbol of accessibility, spaces allocated for people with disabilities. 3. Indicate stencil lettering font, height, text, and locations. C. Submittal procedures and quantities are specified in Section REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS A. Provide pavement markings meeting the accessibility requirements of the 2013 California Building Code (CBC) Title 24 Part 2 Chapter 11B Accessibility; and 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Deliver paints and paint materials in original sealed containers that plainly show the designated name, batch number, color, and date of manufacture, manufacturer's directions, Painted Pavement Markings

2 and name of manufacturer. Provide storage facilities at the project site for maintaining materials at temperatures recommended by the manufacturer. 1.6 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS A. Do not apply paint when either air or pavement temperature is below 50 degrees F or above 95 degrees F; or when rain, fog, condensation, or temperatures below 50 degrees F are anticipated during the drying period. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Manufacturers: 1. Plexipave, Division of California Products; 2. Ennis-Flint; Waterborne Traffic Paint. 3. Substitutions: Section Product Substitution Procedures. B. Basis of Design Product: Plexipave; Hi-Hide Plexicolor Line Paint. 1. Colors: As indicated on drawings. 2.2 PAVEMENT MARKNG PAINT A. The Line Paint, as designated on drawings and in specifications, for use over asphaltic and tar emulsion surfaces including slurry coats, shall conform to the following characteristics and performance: 1. The paint shall be a 100% acrylic emulsion type containing no alkyds, butadiene styrene, or vinyls and shall be thinned with water only. The paint shall also be suitable for application by brush, spray, or roller. 2. All materials used in the manufacturing of paint shall be of good commercial quality entirely suitable for the purpose intended under normal conditions for use. For white color, the opaque portion of the pigment shall be rutile titanium dioxide and the vehicle shall consist of 100% acrylic polymer dispersed in water together with the minimum amounts of necessary additives; such as pigment dispersents, anti-foaming agents, and preservatives; but no driers shall be used. 3. The white paint shall meet a minimum requirement of total solids (percent by weight or paint) of 51.5% and a maximum pigment content (percent by weight of paint) of 36%. The white paint shall contain not less than three pounds per gallon of treated rutile titanium dioxide. A minimum fitness of grind of 4 and a viscosity (Krebs Units) of 80 minimum and 95 maximum is required. The paint shall brush easily and have good flowing, leveling, and spreading characteristics and shall be suitable for application by spray equipment or rollers Painted Pavement Markings

3 4. This paint shall be suitable for use over all types of bituminous surfaces and, when applied over emulsified asphalt, it shall not cause lifting, crazing, peeling, or other damage to the base. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Verify that pavement is dry and in suitable condition to begin pavement marking according to manufacturer s written instructions. B. Proceed with pavement marking only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Do not apply pavement-marking paint until layout, colors, and placement have been verified with the Architect. B. Immediately before applying the paint, thoroughly clean the pavement surface of dust, dirt, sand, scale, water, oil, grease or other objectionable matter. Do not use solvent material that will damage pavements as cleaning agents. Immediately before painting, give pavement surfaces a final cleaning by means of a power broom and a power blower using compressed air following the brooming. C. Provide warning devices required to protect the painting operations and the finished work. 3.3 PAVEMENT MARKING A. Equipment: Apply the traffic and parking striping with a traffic stripe-painting machine with a compressor capacity of at least 105 cubic feet and capable of operating at an air pressure of 125 psi. Mechanically agitate paint while the machine is in operation. Equip the striping machine with a pointer so designed that the machine will hold exactly to the alignment. Equip the propelling vehicle with a speedometer or tachometer, and with a suitable device for determining the quantity of paint in the container. Thoroughly clean the paint container and spray nozzles on the machine before starting each day's work. 1. Equipment used for applying reflectorized striping shall be equipped with a bead dispenser capable of applying the beads at the specified rate. 2. Where the configuration or location of a traffic stripe is such that a striping machine is not suitable, use hand spraying equipment and stencils or templates. 3. Apply paint for word markings, letters, numerals, and symbols using hand spraying equipment and paint-resistant, die-cut stencils or templates, firmly secured to pavement. Mark an extended area beyond edges of each stencil to prevent paint application beyond the stencil. Apply paint so that it cannot run beneath the stencil B. Application: Immediately following the preparation of the pavement surface, apply the striping at the rate of 100 to 110 square feet per gallon of paint. 4 unless otherwise indicated. Apply the stripe of the indicated or specified width, with clean true edges and without sharp breaks. Repaint, to the applicable specifications, portions of the stripe damaged by any type of traffic within 24 hours after the stripe has been applied. 1. Provide International Symbol of Accessibility for each parking stall for the disabled at location indicated. Symbol shall be 36 inches square, white on standard blue background and shall conform to 2013 CBC Title 24 Part 2, Chapter 11B; and 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. 2. Where reflectorized markings are shown, incorporate glass beads into the paint coating at the rate of not less than 5 pounds per gallon. Embed beads into the paint coating to a depth of one half their diameters. C. Tolerances: Apply striping within a tolerance of 1/2 inch in 50 feet. Apply markings and stripings to the widths indicated within a tolerance of 1/4 inch on straight sections and 1/2 inch on curved sections. D. At completion touch up stripes and markings which are not clear and distinct or which are not uniform in color. 3.4 PROTECTING AND CLEANING A. Protect pavement markings from damage and wear during remainder of construction period. B. Clean spillage and soiling from adjacent construction using cleaning agents and procedures recommended by manufacturer of affected construction. END OF SECTION 05/01/ Painted Pavement Markings
