3 TYPES OF INSPECTIONS USACE conducts two types of levee inspections. Routine inspections are conducted every year on each levee segment. These inspections are conducted by the Red River Projects Office personnel. Periodic inspections are conducted every five years on each levee segment. These inspections are conducted by Vicksburg District HQ personnel with assistance of Red River Projects personnel.

7 LEVEE MAINTENANCE Fence crossing is perpendicular to levee slope and free of woody growth and vegetation. Gate is well constructed and operational.
8 LEVEE MAINTENANCE Trees and crops are kept a minimum of 15 from levee toes. Levee slopes are mowed and well maintained. Crown of levee is graded and has a gravel travel surface.
9 LEVEE MAINTENANCE Outlet has a flap gate with a positive seal and adequate scour protection is provided for structure. Structure has been videoed within 5 years and no deficiencies noted in video.
10 LEVEE MAINTENANCE Inlet is free of obstructions and adequate scour protection is provided for structure. Structure has been videoed within 5 years and no deficiencies noted in video.
11 LEVEE MAINTENANCE Ramp crossing parallel to levee crown. Ramp is constructed external to the levee net section and has a good travel surface.
12 LEVEE MAINTENANCE Ramp crossing perpendicular to levee crown. Ramp is constructed external to the levee net section and has a good travel surface.
13 COMMON DEFICIENCIES UNWANTED VEGETATION GROWTH: Trees and brush located within 15 of landside or riverside toes.
14 COMMON DEFICIENCIES ENCROACHMENTS: Utility poles and fence lines located within 15 of landside or riverside toes.
15 COMMON DEFICIENCIES ENCROACHMENTS: Utility crossing that penetrate the net section of the levee embankment.
16 COMMON DEFICIENCIES CLOSURE STRUCTURES: Original closure structure is damaged and inoperable. Sponsor needs to develop an alternate gap closure plan.
17 COMMON DEFICIENCIES SLOPE STABILITY: Slide located on riverside slope of levee, approximately 100 in length.
18 COMMON DEFICIENCIES EROSION / BANK CAVING: Area where severe caving and erosion is occurring on slope and crown. Portions of the crown are missing due to severe and active erosion and bank caving in this area.
19 COMMON DEFICIENCIES DEPRESSIONS / RUTTING: Ramp crossing levee embankment. Ramp penetrates the net section of the levee by approximately 24 in depth.
20 COMMON DEFICIENCIES ANIMAL CONTROL: Bull rub located on landside levee slope. Vertical face is approximately 3 high.
21 COMMON DEFICIENCIES ANIMAL CONTROL: Cattle walk damage on riverside levee slope, approximately 24" in depth.
22 COMMON DEFICIENCIES CULVERTS / DISCHARGE PIPES: No scour protection on inlet of structure. No video inspection performed in last 5 years.
23 MVK BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES UTILITIES: - Power poles must be located a minimum of 40 from toe of levee. - Overhead utility lines crossing the levee must have the following clearance: * volts 18 minimum clearance * ,000 volts 20 minimum clearance * 15,000-50,000 volts 22 minimum clearance - Buried utility lines not penetrate the net section of the levee and must have a minimum of 2 of cover over utility line. - Buried utilities must have a 1V-10H slope in Arkansas and a 1V-20H in Louisiana if perpendicular to levee, and a 1V-20H slope if parallel to levee in both states.
24 MVK BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES STRUCTURES: - All structures must be video inspected every 5 years. This video inspection must be forwarded to the Vicksburg District HQ for evaluation. RAMPS: - Ramp must be constructed external to the net section of the levee. - Ramp must have a minimum of 1V-10H slopes.
25 SEMIANNUAL REPORTS Semiannual reports from the levee sponsor are due to the Vicksburg District HQ in January and July of each year. The report shall cover the inspection, maintenance and operation of the protective works during the period covered in the report.
