WP2 Workshop Building Information Modelling and Interoperability Anna Osello & Carlo Caldera About BIM Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing digital data about a facility data during its life-cycle. The process produces the Building Information Model (often also abbreviated as BIM) which covers three-dimensional geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information and component properties for the design, construction and operation of a building. BIM serves as a sharable repository where information is linked and over time encompasses everything about the facility. I Building Information Models are created primarily by architects and engineers for design and analysis. But why stop there? BIM can be a source of key information for many activities during the life-cycle of the facility. pdating the model with commissioned data, and linking it with operation and maintenance information, can help with the facility management process, optimize energy performance, support emergency preparedness and much more. BIM is not just one model, technology or standard. It is about the collection and digital embodiment of data throughout the entire life-cycle of a facility with emphasis on integration and interoperability of the data and its usage. 1

Insights into the future of building design, construction and management BIM is revolutionizing the way project stakeholders use digital data created by different participants throughout a building s life-cycle. This new process is quickly becoming recognized for the value it brings to any project. < Interactive Workshop Organization First step Second step I Three months (at least) Lecture Third step One months (at least) Self study Last step Two months (at least) Collaborative working Results presentation 2

Challenging the AEC-FM Industry: Interoperability, BIM and Collaborative Workspaces Building Information Modelling is one of the most promising developments in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries. With BIM technology, an accurate virtual model of a building is constructed digitally. When completed, the computergenerated model contains precise geometry and relevant data needed to support the construction, fabrication, and procurement activities needed to realize the building. [Eastman C., et al., BIM Handbook... p 1] Challenging the AEC-FM Industry: Interoperability, BIM and Collaborative Workspaces Architectur Structure e MEP I From Interoperability identifies the need to Towards pass data between applications, and for multiple applications to jointly contribute to the work at hand [Eastman C., et al., BIM Handbook... p 66] 4

Issues in Interoperability for AEC-FM Traditional approaches to sharing project information via file exchange using formats such as.dxf,.dwf,.dwg and.pdf do not transfer the appropriate levels of object intelligence from one model to another. New approaches which strive to address the need to exchange more intelligent project data include necessarily new formats. At present, data exchanges between two applications are typically carried out in four main ways: direct; proprietary links between specific BIM tools; proprietary file exchange formats, primarily dealing with geometry; and public product data model exchange formats like IFC, XML-based exchange formats. Interoperability between 3 Parametric Model and Energy Performance Simulation I Energy analysis programs, such as Ecotect, I<VE>, equest, Energy Plus, esign Builder, HEE etc have traditionally been used to study the energy performance of buildings in order to design more sustainable and energy efficient buildings. Programs may range from simple, user friendly, free tools to extensive, sophisticated programs that need specialized knowledge and are used by building engineering firms. The range of applications include simulations, load calculations and thermal, solar, lighting, acoustic, ventilation, computational fluid dynamics (CF) analysis as well as a host of other functions. Most of these programs support 3- modeling functions, and may allow the engineering/design team to be able to import drawings from CA or other drawing formats (like Revit Architecture). 5

BIM standardization in the construction industry At the present time BIM and Interoperability are regulated by specific standards ISO such as: - ISO :2001 Building construction - Organization of information about construction works - Part 2: Framework for classification of information; - ISO :2007 Building construction - Organization of information about construction works - Part 3: Framework for object-oriented information; - ISO 22263:2008 Organization of information about construction works Framework for management of project information - ISO :2010 Building information modeling - Information delivery manual - Part 1: Methodology and format - ISO /TC 59/SC 13: Organization of information about construction works. BIM standardization in the construction industry A significant role on standardization is taken on by the OmniClass Construction Classification System (known as OmniClass or OCCS), which scope is to encompass building objects at every scale through the entire build environment, from completed structures, vast projects, and multi-structure complexes to individual products and component materials. It is designed to address all kind of building (vertical and horizontal, industrial, commercial and residential). It also addresses actions, people, tools, and information that are used or take part in design, construction, maintenance, and occupancy of the buildings. The approach of OmniClass based on the building life cycle is particularly important in a field such as construction, traditionally focused on organizing segments of information, one portion and one discipline at a time. I 6

Innovation Several studies in recent years show that tedious manual data input for building energy performance and consumption simulation diverts time and resources from productive simulation runs, also because of the fact that data defining a building, its heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting systems and its expected pattern of use and operating schedules, is managed by different and non-interoperable software. By utilising BIM as a data source and interoperability as format exchange for energy analysis, the data input will be more efficient and the existing data more reusable. Self Study I 7
