Erection Safety Notes Please read carefully Any scaffold that has a platform height over 4.0m must be erected by a licensed Scaffolder. Check that all components are on site and are functioning correctly. (refer to check list and quantities) Check that the ground is level and is capable of supporting the weight of the structure plus the Working Load Limit (W.L.L.); W.L.L. = 225kg. If the ground is not capable of supporting this weight then alternative forms of access should be used. The W.L.L. must not be exceeded. During erection temporary guardrails must be employed when above 2.0m. Do not use stepladders or other means on the platform to gain additional height. Stabilisers All four stabilisers must be used where the platform height exceeds 0.9m. Where the tower has the longest face against a solid structure it is permissible to angle 2 stabilisers parallel to the structure of that face. In circumstances where there are ground restrictions for stabilisers to be positioned as specified then alternative forms of access should be used. RS35628, 03/10 3
Movement The tower should only be moved manually and then only from the base. Always ensure that no-one is standing on or climbing the scaffold before unlocking the wheel brakes. When moving the tower, beware of live electrical apparatus, particularly overhead wires or moving parts of other machinery. No person or materials should be on the tower during the tower s relocation. Caution should be exercised when wheeling over rough, uneven or sloping ground, taking care to unlock and relock castors. During Use Inspect the scaffold before use. Refer Maintenance Instructions. Beware of high winds in exposed, gusty or medium breeze conditions. We recommend that in wind speed over 7.7 metres per second that you should cease working on the tower. If the wind speed reaches 11.3 metres per second (strong breeze) the tower should be tied to a solid structure. If the wind speed is likely to exceed gale force (+18 metres per second) the tower must be dismantled and stored undercover. Wind description Medium Breeze Strong Breeze Beaufort Scale Raises dust and loose paper, twigs snap off. Large branches in motion, telegraph wires whistle. Beaufort No. Speed (m.p.h.) Speed (m/sec) Gale Force Walking is difficult cont d RS35628, 03/10 4
Beware of open-ended building which can cause a funnelling effect. Do not abuse the equipment. Damaged or incorrect components must never be used. Never use scaffold if damaged or if you are unsure. The assembled tower is a working platform and must not be used as a means of access to other structures. Never work from an incomplete scaffold. Never use scaffold where an electrical hazard exists. Ensure wheel brakes are locked before climbing scaffold. Beware of horizontal forces (eg. power tools), which could generate instability. Maximum horizontal force = 46kg with all four stabilisers engaged. Never climb on the outside of the scaffold. The scaffold should be climbed from the inside only. The access ladder must be used when the platform is higher than 2.0m. Do not use this scaffold if you tire easily or are subject to fainting spells, are using medication, drugs or alcohol, are pregnant or physically handicapped. Inspection The scaffold should be inspected thoroughly; a) when originally purchased, received and put into service; b) before each use; c) after mishaps, drops and impacts; and d) periodically. Transport The scaffold should be securely fastened to minimize chafing and the effects of road shock. The scaffold should be supported to avoid sagging. Overhang from supports should be limited. RS35628, 03/10 5
Maintenance Lost, broken or damaged parts must be replaced. Any tube with indentations greater than 5mm must not be used. Frames should be visually checked for cracked welds, bends, twists and squareness. Check all the joints and locks for wear or damage. Castors should be checked for cracks, wear and damage. All wheel brakes should be checked for operation. Adjusting threads should be checked by winding the screw from the bottom to the top, and back down to the bottom again. (This will ensure the castors are at the same starting off height). Threads should be cleaned and lubricated to keep them running free. Platforms should be checked for any distortion and cracked welds. Check timber decking for cracks or splits. Trapdoor hinges and lock operation should be checked. Handrails, Diagonal Braces and Plan Braces should be checked for bends and twists. Check for cracked welds. All locking mechanisms should be lubricated and operating freely. Stabilizers should be checked for bends and damage. Check for cracked welds. All clamps and locks should be cleaned and lubricated. Feet should be checked for wear and damage. The Ladder stiles and rungs should be checked for damage. The hooks and feet should also be checked for wear or damage. Storage The scaffold should be stored to protect the scaffold when not in use, preferably under cover. Any racks should have sufficient support points to avoid sagging. Material should not be placed on the stored scaffold. RS35628, 03/10 6
Base Pack Erection Step 1 Move the base unit into the required position and unfold the base frame. Ensure frame is level. If ground surface is uneven it may be necessary to fit optional adjustable height castors to level the unit. NB Check that frame is level each time the unit is relocated. Step 2 Push folding frame outwards until folding elbow joints lock into position. Fully unfold base frame. Ensure both elbow joints are in locked position. To unlock joint press latch inwards. Lock brake on castors, ensure castors always face outwards. RS35628, 03/10 7
Step 3 Attach the plan brace (blue) to uprights at diagonal corners ensuring that the claws are locked in position. Step 4 Position platform at desired height level but not above the third rung. Ensure the trapdoor is closed before ascending platform. The base frame assembly is now complete. Always climb from the inside of the frame NEVER THE OUTSIDE. When working on the platform never over-reach. End frames should be used to provide a firm handhold. Correct way to climb onto the platform of base unit. RS35628, 03/10 8
Base Pack + Guardrail Pack (up to maximum platform height of 1.7m) Step 5 Assemble base pack as per Steps 1 through to 4 with the addition of the bottom horizontal brace (silver). Fit spring interlock clips to each standard of the end frames (supplied with the guardrail pack). Assemble the four spring interlocking clips as shown (see insert), by expanding spring over end. Then insert guardrail frames into each end frame. Turn spring interlocking clips so that the stud on the clip is inserted into the hole in each standard. Step 6 Reposition the platform to the desired height but no higher than the sixth rung (i.e. top of base pack). Clip on a diagonal brace (white) on the 5 th and 7 th rungs. RS35628, 03/10 9
Step 7 Attach one stabiliser to each corner of the tower at approximately 45 degrees. The top clamp should be fitted immediately under a rung. The bottom clamp should be fitted as low as possible, refer to the diagram below. Ensure that all 4 rubber feet are in contact with the ground and that the clamps are secured. Position the stabilisers as shown in diagrams. When moving tower, lock each stabiliser leg just clear of the ground, unlock castors ensuring area is firm and clear of all obstructions both on the ground and above. After moving, check all castors are firmly on the ground and locked, and that the tower is vertical. Re-position the stabilisers as above. RS35628, 03/10 10
Step 8 Access to the platform must be from the inside of the frame and through the trap door. Fit horizontal braces (silver) as the top guardrails onto the end frames ensuring the graspers are facing downwards. Fit horizontal braces (silver) as the mid guardrails above the rung (second from the top) ensuring the graspers are facing outwards. RS35628, 03/10 11
Base Pack + Extension pack + Guardrail Pack (up to maximum platform height of 3.7m) Step 9 Assemble base pack as per Steps 1 through to 3 with the addition of the bottom horizontal brace (silver). Insert the 2m (8 rung) extension frames in the base frame. Ensure the interlocking clips are engaged. RS35628, 03/10 12
Step 10 Clip on the first diagonal brace (white) on the 4 th and 7 th rungs. Clip on the second diagonal brace (white) on the opposite side on the 7 th and 10 th rungs. Ensure graspers are facing down and locked into position. RS35628, 03/10 13
Step 11 Fit one stabiliser to each corner of the tower. Loosen clamp and place around vertical tube immediately below a rung and tighten the clamp using the wingnut refer to step seven for Stabiliser positional diagrams. Step 12 During assembly a temporary guardrail (silver horizontal brace) must be employed. Position the platform on the 8 th rung. Ascend the tower from the inside and through the trapdoor in the platform. All components must be passed up through the trapdoor or well within the footprint of the tower. Temporary horizontal braces (silver) must be positioned 4 rungs above the level of the platform during construction. RS35628, 03/10 14
Step 13 Fit temporary guardrails. Locate Guardrail frames and horizontal braces (silver). Ensure the spring interlock clips are engaged. The bracing pattern should follow a simple zigzag shape (see insert). Step 14 Ensure intermediate guardrails (silver horizontal braces) are positioned onto the upright above the horizontal tube with the graspers locked and facing outwards. Then move the platform and temporary guardrails (silver horizontal braces) down 2 rungs. RS35628, 03/10 15
Step 15 Move the second platform to the top rung of the extension frame. Ensure the platform trapdoors are at opposite ends of the tower to each other. Attach access ladder to the frame below the trapdoor. Position the top guardrails (silver horizontal braces). Step 16 Fit toeboards. Start with the end boards which have angle brackets fitted. There are two slots depending on which side you position the diagonal brace. Clip into the correct slots as shown, ensuring that no large objects can fall through any gaps and that the trap door can open with ease. RS35628, 03/10 16
