In early 2005, due to progressive deterioration, the approximately 2,500m 2 original asphalt roof covering was deemed to be at the end of its service life. In an effort to maintain the waterproofing integrity of the roof and improve its thermal performance, the roof was overlaid with a loose laid EPDM membrane, followed by a filter fleece, extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation, and an overburden of stone ballast. However, after a short period of time it was apparent there were issues with the new roof build-up with increasing instances of water ingress into the occupied space below, posing a major health and safety risk to the occupants. Triflex were invited to provide a long term solution to the problems, and investigation identified that the EPDM membrane had failed allowing water penetration through the underlying asphalt and ultimately the concrete deck. As a consequence, there was a need to once again implement a programme of re-roofing works. The challenge

3 TRIFLEX PROTECT Given the need to minimise the costs associated with the re-roofing works, Triflex agreed that every effort should be made to repair and preserve the existing substrate by re-waterproofing the mastic asphalt, therefore avoiding the costs and disruption assocaited with complete removal. A new filter layer, XPS insulation, water flow reducing filtration layer were then introduced, followed by the ballast as part of an inverted roof build-up. A solution was required that could not only offered exceptional compatibility with the existing asphalt substrate, but also had the ability to withstand any standing / ponding water in what was essentially a low to zero pitched roof application. Following an extensive review, the Triflex ProTect system was specified for all main roof areas. Whilst Triflex ProDetail was used for all upstands, rooflight kerbs, penetrations and perimeter edge details. Regular weekly meetings were held with the school to both manage the programme and limit disruption.

4 Russell Trew Ltd were engaged to carry out the re-roofing works which commenced in September 2015 during term time. It was necessary for Russell Trew to co-ordinate all works with the Academy to ensure there was little or no disruption to the school. Triflex systems rapid cure times and single process application allowed priority roof areas to be waterproofed rapidly and within short timeframes with little or no disruption. As roof areas were progressively waterproofed the original XPS insulation was utilised, new lightning conductors installed and edge protection rails fixed. Completed in January 2016, this project has been a great testimony to Russell Trew not only the application of the Triflex systems but for delivery of the whole refurbishment and improvement package with the minimal of disruption to the school.
