2 TCJ3E Construction Technology, Grade 11, Workplace Preparation Name: This job may allow employees to develop technical knowledge and skills related to carpentry, masonry, electrical systems, heating and cooling, and plumbing for residential construction. Employees may have gained hands-on experience using a variety of materials, processes, tools, and equipment to design, layout, and build projects. They may have created and read technical drawings, learned construction terminology, interpreted building codes and regulations, and applied mathematical skills as they developed construction projects. Employees may have also developed an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to construction technology, and may have explored postsecondary and career opportunities in the field. Describe a time when you used the design process to solve a construction challenge. Describe what the problem was and list at least two possible solutions. List at least two Pros and Cons of each solution and tell which solution you choose to solve the problem. Explain why you think this was the best solution. Drawings, pictures, sketches or models may be helpful. (you may want to use a separate sheet for this.) Identify at least five construction processes and underline those that you were involved in. Ie framing

3 Describe a project that you worked on and list the tools, equipment, and materials that you used to complete the project. Identify at least five building materials used in residential construction. Circle the materials that you used during your employment in construction. Ie natural wood, plywood, engineered wood, brick, etc. Give a definition or description of three of the following construction terms: Concrete forms, studs, lintels, ground-fault circuit interrupters, P-Traps, plenums, medium-density fibreboard, plywood, cement, mortar Describe the purpose of building codes, and identify two other regulations and standards that apply to construction projects.

4 Identify three hazards related to materials, processes, and/or equipment used in a construction work environment, and the precautions that should be taken to avoid these hazards. Explain how to handle two hazardous materials (ie. asbestos, lead-based paint) in accordance with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) guidelines. Explain how the local economy is directly linked to the construction industry.

5 Identify two programs currently in place which help reduce construction waste and/or reuse or recycle construction materials. Produce a sketch and/or technical drawing of one or more building systems (eg structural, plumbing, electrical), using manual and/or computer-assisted methods and appropriate metric and/or imperial units. (This may be a drawing that you used when working or you may produce something new.) Identify two skilled trades involved in the construction industry and explain the education or experience required to work in these trades.

6 Describe the process used to obtain a building permit. Describe one modification that can be made to a building project that would improve its quality and/or value. Eg. Upgrades in insulation Explain how you would convert a measurement of five feet into metric units.

7 Describe your work, if any, on exterior or interior finishing projects. Ie vinyl, wood siding, fascia, soffit, brick veneer, paint, tile, trim etc.

Employees may have gained hands-on experience using a variety of materials, processes, tools and equipment; created and interpreted construction drawings; and learned more about building design and project planning. They may have expanded their knowledge of terminology, codes and regulations, and health and safety standards related to residential and light commercial construction. Employees may have also expanded their awareness of environmental and societal issues related to construction technology, and may have explored entrepreneurship and career opportunities in the industry that may be pursued. Describe a time when you used the design process to solve a construction challenge. Describe what the problem was and list at least three possible solutions. List the Pros and Cons of each solution and tell which solution you choose to solve the problem and explain why you think this was the best solution. Drawings, pictures, sketches or models may be helpful. (You may want to use a separate sheet for this.) Provide working drawings, conventional or computer-aided, (produced by yourself) for a construction project. These may be site plans, floor plans or assembly drawings and must include appropriate metric and/or imperial units. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of one of the following structural and non-structural materials used in construction projects. Wood vs steel for studs and beams; Asphalt shingles vs. steel roofing; Cement block vs. poured concrete; Brick vs. vinyl, aluminum or wood siding

9 Briefly outline the building code requirements for forces and stresses due to loads and weather conditions. (Eg heat, cold, wind, snow rain) that structural members (eg footings, foundations, floors, bearing walls, roofs, columns, beams, lintels) must be designed to withstand. List two factors that will affect the design and installation of foundations for construction projects. Describe three of the following construction terms: girders, open-web steel joists, plenums, medium density fibreboard, millwork, bricks, mortar, fling form, vent stack, floor drain, plumbing trap, ground fault circuit.

10 Describe the set-up, use, and maintenance of ladders in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations and Construction Safety Association of Ontario guidelines. 13 TWJ3E Custom Woodworking, Grade 11, Workplace Preparation Name: This job may have allowed employees to develop their knowledge and skills related to cabinet making and furniture making. Employees may have gained practical experience using a variety of the materials, tools, equipment, and joinery techniques associated with custom woodworking. Employees may have created and interpreted technical drawings and will have planned, designed, and fabricated projects. They may also have developed an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to the woodworking industry, and may have explored apprenticeships, and career opportunities in the field. Describe two traditional and two newer natural manufactured materials commonly used in custom woodworking projects; (Briefly describe your own experiences with any of these materials.) Explain how to maintain, adjust and store any two woodworking tools or equipment correctly and safely.

14 Explain any three of the following terms related to woodworking: Plywood, veneer, annual rings, kiln-dried lumber, dressed lumber, truing, dressing, joining, leveling, squaring, shimming, planning, gluing, nailing Demonstrate your ability to convert the measurement of a room in feet to metres. For example I have a room that needs flooring that is 200 square feet. Using a mathematical formula show the metric conversion for this problem. Provide a picture, sketch, drawing etc of something you have built or a finishing you have applied to something in order to enhance the appearance of a piece of woodworking; Describe the safety precautions taken when building or completing the carpentry project above.

Employees may have gained further experience in the safe use of common woodworking materials, tools, equipment, finishes, and hardware, and will have understood the entrepreneurial skills needed to establish and operate a custom woodworking business. Employees may also have an awareness of health and safety issues and environmental and societal issues related to woodworking, and will have explored career opportunities in the field. Describe two factors that should be considered when selecting and purchasing wood products. Compare the properties of natural and manufactured materials that are used for the same function; eg. Natural wood versus plywood

23 TCC3E/TCC4E Construction Technology: Carpentry, Grade 11/12, Workplace Preparation Name: This job focuses on domestic, commercial or industrial carpentry; practical workplace applications; and the development of generic employment skills and independent learning skills. Employees will have read blueprints, drawings and sketches; examined the processes involved in maintenance, repair and renovation of wooden structures; and prepared a variety of layouts. They will also have studied industry standards; considered health and safety issues; and explored careers, lifelong learning opportunities and the impact of carpentry on the environment. Employees will have developed generic employment skills and independent learning skills; inspected and tested overhead and underground power lines and cables and auxiliary equipment using electrical test equipment; and spliced, soldered and insulated conductors. They will also have studied industry standards; considered health and safety issues; and explored careers and lifelong learning opportunities. How long have you worked in this industry? Employees will have developed generic employment skills and independent learning skills; read and interpreted blueprints, drawings or other specifications; installed, troubleshot and/or overhauled entire heating, ventilation, air handling, refrigeration and air conditioning systems; and prepared work estimates for clients. They will also have studied industry standards; considered health and safety issues; explored careers and lifelong learning opportunities; and explored the impact of the heating and cooling industry on the environment. They may also have restored, cleaned or painted existing masonry structures; considered health and safety issues; explored careers and lifelong learning opportunities; and explored the impact of masonry on the environment.
