Vision To be the provider of choice for advancing railway safety and technology Transportation Technology Center, Inc., a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads Lori Funk, Sunrise Manufacturing Bulk Bin TAG Update Bob Celenze, Freight Damage Prevention Consultant 2017 TTCI/AAR 1
What are Bins? 300 Gallon Wood or Plastic Rigid Box around an aseptic packed product Scholle Bag Scholle Bin Primary Focus on Tomato Products (Diced/Paste) 2017 TTCI/AAR 2
2017 TTCI/AAR 3
2017 TTCI/AAR 4
Contents Re-Processed into: 2017 TTCI/AAR 5
Established by the DP&FC Committee Objective: to develop a method to research the bin sizes, design, strength and possible testing. TAG volunteers include: Mike Sandoval, NS Jeff Poeppe, UP Russ Cole, BNSF Lori Funk, Sunrise Mfg. Miles Benitez, AAR/TTCI 2017 TTCI/AAR 6
CCLG Part 7, Bulk Bins: Incorporates GIS 707 and 711, Which had superseded other GISs as the bag-in-a-bin concept evolved TTCI/AAR 7
2017 TTCI/AAR 8
Background: 1995/96 Significant uptick in Damages noted by Railroad Members and Shipper s. No Specific pattern designated Typical Corrugated Bulkheads Used 40/48 x 84 x 2/4/6/8/ # Compression Typical Car 50 Non Cushioned RBOX Type Push to change from Steel to Plastic Strapping Consolidations of UP/SP and BN/SF Railroads 2017 TTCI/AAR 9
Background: Initial Series of Impacts Revealed Typical Dunnage was not effective with Bins. Several Series of Impacts on R&D material occurred over the next year plus. Final Design is current version used today in CCLG Part 7, Bulk Bins Only product tested was Paste Only Wood Bins were available Additions to Original GIS were implemented through the years to address challenges and damages noted 2017 TTCI/AAR 10
Background: 2017 TTCI/AAR 11
Background: 2017 TTCI/AAR 12
2017 TTCI/AAR 13
2017 TTCI/AAR 14
2017 TTCI/AAR 15
Bin Condition related to bin storage mostly outdoors at origin and destination loaded and empty 2017 TTCI/AAR 16
Bin Construction - clips 2017 TTCI/AAR 17
Bin Construction 2017 TTCI/AAR 18
Bin components often stamped with manufacturer and year produced TTCI/AAR 19
Original GIS approval: The typical wood bin tested was 44 wide x 48 long x 43 high. Most problem cars today have 49 inch high bins TTCI/AAR 20
Bin and filler panel alignment is a concern 2017 TTCI/AAR 21
Reinforced blocks punch into bins 2017 TTCI/AAR 22
Shipper trying out non-approved load pattern: filler panels of uniform strength are used throughout load 2017 TTCI/AAR 23
Where are we going? What s the next step? Industry focus on increasing payloads Equipment: Cushioned cars with 200,000+ lb. payloads TBOX type boxcars 60 long FBOX type boxcars ,000+ Taller Bins Possible load patterns Partial third layer Turning bins to space dunnage between more stacks 2017 TTCI/AAR 24
Where are we going? Some things do not change: Wooden bins remain king Price Parts can be repaired, cannibalized Sound damage prevention practices Attention to detail Protecting product from bin splinters 2017 TTCI/AAR 25
Outstanding Questions Remain: Feasible to track individual bin parts for number of turns? Quality of parts is subjective, how do we ensure consistent quality and performance? Ply? Wood Type? When should a part be replaced? Different Designs in Dunnage, are they specific to one type bin or one type car? How do we address changes in bin size or bin construction? Number of Clips? Should bins undergo certification testing? Should there be an expiration date on a bin part? Should Loading Guide be expanded and tested to allow these variables? 2017 TTCI/AAR 26
THANK YOU! Damage Prevention Questions? Dunnage Questions? Lori Funk (916) Bob Celenze (908) TTCI/AAR 27
