3 TM Moisture Resistance. The impact of moisture gain and loss on the performance of polystyrene foam insulation in below grade applications is an important consideration. Any change in R-value as a result of water gain and loss should be accounted for in the design of below grade applications. Samples of EPS and XPS were excavated from the exterior foundation of a building in St. Paul, MN. The insulation was placed into service in 993 and had 5 years of use as vertical wall insulation separating a heated building foundation from soil. In addition, when tested in accordance with ASTM C52, Standard Test Method for Characterizing the Effect of Exposure to Environmental Cycling on Thermal Performance of Insulation Products Foam-Control PLUS+ maintains its R-value and strength after severe exposure to freeze-thaw cycles. Drying Potential. Moisture Content, Volume % Sample Upon Removal Conditioned 2 EPS XPS Please refer to Moisture Study Summary 0. 2 After four weeks in a laboratory at 72 F, 50% RH. Foam-Control PLUS+ is manufactured to resist moisture absorption in wetting conditions and release absorbed moisture quickly during drying periods, which means Foam-Control PLUS+ maintains R-value. Identification. Each sheet of Foam-Control PLUS+ is clearly marked with grade, R-value, compressive strength, and building code compliance. Flexible Product Options. Foam-Control PLUS+ is available factory scored and can be field snapped to produce 6, 24, and 48 widths. One of the most destructive forces anywhere is termites. 4 EPS vs. XPS Apples-to-Apples Comparison of Rigid Foam Insulation Insulation Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Moisture Performance in 5-Year Real World Test (EPS & XPS side-by-side on the same building) Excavated after 5-years as a below-grade foundation insulation, the EPS had retained 94% of its published R-value and contained only 4.8% moisture content. The R-value at the time of excavation showed that EPS is less affected by moisture content than XPS. Excavated after 5-years as a below-grade foundation insulation, XPS only retained 52% of its published R-value and contained higher moisture content of 8.9%. The R-value at the greatly affected by exposure to moisture. Permeability Higher rate of permeability allows FoamControl Plus+ to expel moisture faster and maintain R-value. Lower rate of permeability delays the drying process and results in greater time to recover lost R-value when exposed to moisture. Recycled Content Contains up to 5% recycled content Foam Technologies recycled 5.4 million pounds of EPS in 203. limited amounts of recycled content offered in all products. Environment & Sustainability formaldehyde, or color dies. 5 STUDY SUMMARY Moisture No. 0 EXTERIOR FOUNDATION WALL INSULATION The impact of moisture absorption on the performance of polystyrene foam insulations used for below grade applications is an important design consideration. It has been scientifically proven that water absorption into polystyrene foam insulations will diminish R-values. Any change in R-value due to water absorption should be accounted for in the design of below grade applications. This Study Summary provides the results of independent testing of below grade insulation consisting of Foam- Control EPS and an extruded polystyrene (XPS) product which were installed adjacent to each other. Samples of EPS and XPS were excavated from the exterior foundation of a building in St. Paul, MN. The insulation was placed into service in 993 and had 5 years of use as vertical wall insulation separating a heated building foundation from soil. Summary of Test Results Material Material Thermal Resistance R-value/in. upon removal Moisture Content Moisture Content volume% upon removal Conditioned R-value/in. EPS XPS Conditioned Moisture Content volume% CONTROL, NOT COMPROMISE. Foam face-off: The facts about below grade insulation and water absorption. WATER ABSORPTION AND R-VALUE RETENTION % RETENTION Foam-Control EPS Type I Extruded Polystyrene 8.9 Retained thermal resistance and water absorption of insulations subjected to 5 years below grade exposure EPS XPS After four weeks in a laboratory at 72 F, 50% RH. 0 % R-value Retention 4.8 % Water Absorption by Volume The results of the independent testing are dramatic. The EPS insulation maintained 94% of its stated R-value of 3.6 after the 5 year time period and had a moisture content of 4.8%. However, the XPS retained only 52% of its stated R-value of 5.0. These results suggest very clearly that short term laboratory tests of water absorption for EPS and XPS do not necessarily reflect the long term below grade performance of these materials. Testing was conducted by Element, an independent, accredited Third Party Laboratory. This Study Summary is part of a series of moisture impact studies available. Please refer to other Study Summaries for additional information. Foam-Control EPS products are manufactured by AFM Corporation licensees. Copyright 203 AFM Corporation. All rights reserved. 6 STUDY SUMMARY Moisture No. 02 EXTERIOR FOUNDATION WALL INSULATION The impact of moisture absorption on the performance of polystyrene foam insulations used for below grade applications is an important design consideration. It has been scientifically proven that water absorption into polystyrene foam insulations will diminish R-values. This Study Summary provides the results of a research project conducted in 988 by the Energy Division of The Minnesota Department of Public Service. The project report is entitled A Survey of Minnesota Home Exterior Foundation Wall Insulation: Moisture Content and Thermal Performance. Two expanded polystyrene (EPS) and fourteen extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation samples were removed 6-24 inches below grade from the foundations of Minnesota homes. The objective of the study was to survey the performance of below grade insulation 2-5 years after initial installation. Summary of 988 Study Test Results CONTROL, NOT COMPROMISE. Foam face-off: The facts about below grade insulation and water absorption. WATER ABSORPTION AND R-VALUE RETENTION Material Age (Years) Thickness (Inches) Density (pcf) EPS XPS % Expanded Polystyrene Extruded Polystyrene Retained thermal resistance and water absorption of insulations subjected to below grade exposure Material Moisture Content (Volume %) R-value ( o F.ft 2.h/Btu) per inch % Loss 2 EPS XPS % R-value Retention % Water Absorption by Volume Average of samples. 2 Based upon R-value of 3.6 for EPS and 5.0 for XPS. The results indicate that the below grade moisture absorption of the EPS and XPS samples are comparable. It is interesting to note that the EPS samples exhibited similar water absorption results even though they were installed for more than twice the length of time. Testing was conducted by Energy Division of The Minnesota Department of Public Service. This Study Summary is part of a series of moisture impact studies available. Please refer to other Study Summaries for additional information. These results suggest very clearly that short term laboratory tests of water absorption for EPS and XPS do not necessarily reflect the long term below grade performance of these materials.
