Creating sustainable source of raw material through Agro Forestry models Dr. Jagdish Tamak ITC Limited Paperboards & Specialty Papers Division Presentation for IPPTA Conference & AGM on March 23-24, 2018 at New Delhi 1
Content ITC Wood Requirement Tree Improvement Program Eucalyptus Clonal Development Sustainable Agroforestry Models Extension Services/Success Stories Eucalyptus Myths Sustainable Wood Availability 2
ITC Wood Requirement ITC Mill at Bhadrachalam consumes ~1.5 million tons of wood annually to produce 3.75 lac tons of pulp 90% of the wood requirement is met through farm land plantations. ITC Policy: Develop sustainable source of raw material. Focus in core area (200 km) & reduce mill landed cost. Planting more than the consumption. Livelihood to small & marginal farmers. Environment protection / Carbon sequestration. 3
ITC Wood Generation Leveraged its need of pulp wood through: Tree Improvement Research Developing Sustainable Agroforestry Plantations Social Forestry - Economically backward wasteland owners (Tribals < 1.0 ha land) Farm Forestry Larger land holding & resourceful farmers. 4
Glimpses of History BPL (Bhadrachalam Paper Mill) commissioned in 1979 Bamboo - source of wood for pulping Entire Khammam district forest land allotted to ITC In 1988 Forest Policy implemented across India Wood extraction from forests by private companies was banned ITC proactively embarked on Tree Improvement Program (TIP) Initiated research work on Eucalyptus, Subabul, Casuarina Developed Clonal Technology Bhadrachalam Clones 5
Tree Improvement Program The company started Tree Improvement Program in 1989 Increase productivity (at least by 3 times) Reduce rotation age Suitable spacing Develop insect-pest & disease resistant clones Develop site specific clones Improve package of practices Make Eucalyptus, Subabul & Casuarina tree farming - farmer friendly or an alternate option to agriculture crops. 6

Tree Improvement Program Results As a result of Plus Tree Selection, Root Trainer Technology, Matching Genotype to Site and Improved Package of Practices. Survival is more than 95% compared to 40% in seedlings. Rotation period reduced from 7 to 4 years (short cycle) Productivity of Bhadrachalam clones improved to 20 to 58 MT/Ha/Annum Became popular as Bhadrachalam clones Planted through out length & breadth of India by FDs, FDCs and other paper companies. In a span of 25 years, the skyline changed particularly in AP & TS. ITC has covered more than 2.7 lac ha area Feb,

Agroforestry in Block Plantations 17
Sustainable Agro Forestry Model for Wood & Food Security A New Concept : Paired Row Design Pulpwood Tree Plantation Agric Crop Area Agric Crop Area 8.5M 8.5M 1.0M 1.5M Design: 8.5m + 1.5m / 2 X 1.0m = 5sq.m (2000 Trees/Ha) Land Allocation: 75% - Agriculture & 25% - Forestry 18
What is Novelty??? 1. Planting Eucalyptus in Paired Row Design. 2. Accommodating 2000 Trees/Ha in 2500sq.m. 3. Harvesting same wood yield as in block plantation. 4. Natural resource utilization round the year. 5. Leaving 7500sq.m land for agriculture crop. 6. In a cycle of 4 years, an agriculture crop is replaced by plantation which can increase farm profitability significantly and will serve as fixed deposit. Earlier Concept : Agric Crops in Plantations Recent Approach : Plantations in Agric Crops 19
Benefits of Adopting Agroforestry Systems 1. Improving farm productivity & profitability 2. Contributing to the food security by restoring farm soil fertility 3. Reducing deforestation and pressure on natural forests. 4. Increasing diversity of farm lands 5. Trees act as wind and insect barriers 6. Higher carbon sequestration & mitigating climate change. 7. Reducing poverty through increased production of agro-forestry products. 8. Reduces the risk of rain-fed agriculture 9. Higher economic returns to the farmers 10.This model is best suited for small & medium farmers 20

Eucalyptus Myth National Green Tribunal (NGT) in its Order dated 20 th July 2015 in Original Application No. 9 of 2014, in para 31 clearly stated that based on studies (in Annexure) conducted in different countries, growing of Eucalyptus, one of the major farm forestry species, has no adverse environmental impact nor is it disastrous for water table, as it consumes less water per kg of biomass generated versus many tree and agricultural crops (para 29).
