THE AMAZON FOREST 60% OF TROPICAL FORESTS IN THE WORLD
THE AMAZON FOREST - Has the world s greatest biodiversity - Nearly 45% of the Amazon is in Brazil - Brazil has 1/3 of the world s tropical forests - The Amazon Basin flows 1/5 of the world s water to the ocean
AMAZON DEFORESTATION IS THE MAIN EMISSION CAUSE IN BRAZIL, WORLD 4th CO2 EMITTER According to the World Resources Institute, deforestation in the Amazon accounts for more than 70% of total greenhouse gases emissions in Brazil, world s fourth biggest emitter 17% Amazon biome already deforested 70% Brazil emissions caused by deforestation 1,2 Billion of tons CO2 each year
AMAZONAS STATE
THE AMAZONAS STATE - 98% of preserved forest (the highest index in Brazil) - The biggest Brazilian state within the Amazon - 16% of the world s freshwater reservoir - 40% of the Brazilian Amazon forest
STATE OF AMAZONAS Deforestation projection,
STATE OF AMAZONAS Deforestation projection,
STATE OF AMAZONAS Deforestation projection,
STATE OF AMAZONAS Deforestation projection, LEGEND Deforestation Preserved Vegetation Hidrography Area under high pressure Area under low pressure Advanced creation process Under study for creation The SimAmazonia I model (Soares Filho et al., 2006) shows that the rate of deforestation in the State of Amazonas will rapidly increase in the coming decades, which could result up to a loss of 30% of Amazon forest cover up to If concrete measures to prevent deforestation are not undertaken, deforestation in the protected areas of the State of Amazonas could emit about 3.5 billion CO2 tons in the atmosphere.
DEFORESTATION ECONOMIC RATIONALE Small scale deforestation linked to traditional populations Deforestation caused by agribusiness Deforestation is not caused by stupidity, rather, by the basic rationality of money, so a change in paradigm is needed: the forest should be worth more standing than cut.
FAS MISSION The Amazon Sustainable Foundation (FAS) mission is to promote the sustainable involvement, environmental conservation and life quality improvement of the resident communities and users of the Amazonas State Conservation Units. Making the forest worth more standing than cut

BOLSA FLORESTA PROGRAM The four components FAS is responsible for implementing the Bolsa Floresta (Forest Allowance) Program, which provides rewards to local communities that subscribe a zero-deforestation commitment. Bolsa Floresta is a comprehensive program, which includes: Bolsa Floresta Renda (Income Forest Allowance): development and support of sustainable income generation. Bolsa Floresta Social (Social Forest Allowance): improvement in education, health, communications and transportation. Bolsa Floresta Familiar (Family Forest allowance): economic compensation for environmental services provided by the Amazon Forest (stability of climate, maintenance of rains, carbon storage, biodiversity conservation). Bolsa Floresta Associação (Association Forest Allowance): local community governance strengthening and social control of the program.

SUPPORT PROGRAMS These programs complement the deforestation combat. Health and education The communities receive direct benefits for their contributions to conservation such as access to clean water, healthcare, information, and other improvements in their quality of life. Sustainable production Community organization and business training are combined to improve the local capacity in forest management and forest production extraction. Monitoring and control Improvements in environmental protection infrastructure and staff, as well as in advanced remote sensing techniques. Scientific development Education centers built to deliver basic and advanced education; training on scientific information and conservation efforts to local communities. Technical training on sustainable activities.
