2 ABOUT OUR SEEDLINGS The seedlings we grow are containerized seedlings which are grown in containers in greenhouses. Before being shipped the tree seedlings are moved outside to shadehouses for a period of time to harden off or become acclimated to outdoor conditions. We do not ship trees without a hardening off process. ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THESE SEEDLINGS IS THAT IN ADDITION TO THE NORMAL SPRING PLANTING SEASON THEY CAN BE PLANTED THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER AND INTO FALL IF MOISTURE CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE. We are also pleased to be able to offer bareroot seedlings which are available only in the spring. There is a separate price list for these seedlings. Unless otherwise noted, these are sold in multiples of 25. IF YOU DON T SEE WHAT YOU WANT ON THIS LIST, PLEASE CALL AND WE WILL TRY TO FIND IT FOR YOU. You must take delivery of bareroot stock by June 1. Styroblock Note: Size refers to the approximate volume of the root plug cavity in cubic inches. Styro 60 is a new product and is available in very limited quantities. CONTAINERS & CONTAINER DEPOSIT We grow our containerized seedlings in Styrofoam blocks (Styroblocks). Since these are reusable, a container deposit of $5.50 is charged at the time they are taken. Deposit is refunded if undamaged blocks are returned within one year. All other refunds are at our discretion. Size Cavities/block Cavity Diameter Cavity Depth Styro 4A Styro Styro Styro Styro Please note: Most seedlings are extracted and bundled for shipping so Styroblock deposit does not apply. CARE OF YOUR SEEDLINGS IN THE STYROBLOCKS: Upon receipt of seedlings, immediately remove the Styroblocks from the shipping boxes. Seedlings should be kept in a cool place if possible before planting. Under a tree or the north and east sides of buildings are ideal storage locations. Water your seedlings after unpacking and again right before planting. If you won t be planting the seedlings right away, they should be watered daily or as needed. You can check for dryness by pulling out one or two trees to inspect. When you put the tree back in the block, be sure to line up the grooves in the root plug with the grooves on the inside of the container. How often they will need water depends on the wind, temperature and humidity. When watering, give them a good soaking - any excess will run out the bottom of the blocks. EXTRACTED AND BUNDLED: Keep seedlings in the shipping boxes in a cool place. These trees should be planted as soon as possible. INDIVIDUALLY BAGGED: These trees may be removed from the shipping boxes and stored in the refrigerator for a short time. However, as with all trees shipped outside of the Styroblocks, these seedlings should be planted as soon as possible. BAREROOT SEEDLINGS: All bareroot stock should be kept in a cool place and planted as soon as possible. Protect roots from drying out during storage and planting. SHIPPING OPTIONS If you are planning to plant as soon as you receive your trees, you may choose to have your trees extracted from the Styroblocks and bundled. This significantly reduces the space needed for transport and, in turn, reduces shipping costs. Trees are generally in bundles or bags of 20. Some of the larger plug sizes have fewer trees per bundle. These bundles are easily handled by planters. Your only extra cost is for the boxes in which they are packed. This is our most popular shipping option. If your planting project will be spread out over several weeks or may be delayed due to weather or other reasons, we recommend taking delivery of the trees in the Styroblocks. We will try to accommodate your planting plans as much as possible even if it means making multiple shipments for an order. It is usually easier for us to hold extracted and bundled trees in our cooler than for you to care for them. PLANTING TIPS If still in the Styroblock, seedlings should be watered well immediately before planting. Seedlings may be planted by hand or with a planting machine. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that the top of the root plug is covered by approximately 1/2 of native soil. The most important thing to remember when planting bareroot trees is to make sure the roots do not dry out. Keep them in a bag when planting by hand. If machine planting, keep the roots covered in the planting boxes on the machine. Wet burlap works well for this. Bareroot stock should be planted at the same depth at which they were growing in the nursery. Certain species of bareroot stock should be sweated for best survival in the field. Sweating helps break dormancy created by a winter of cold storage. To sweat the stock it needs increased humidity and warmth until the buds start to swell, usually in only a few days. This can be accomplished by setting the box in a warmer place (60-70 degrees F. ) inside a building (but not in the direct sun) and keeping the roots moist. Check daily for moisture and to see when the buds begin to swell. It is important that you not begin sweating stock until planting conditions are also warm and moist. Planting sweated stock into subfreezing or very cold conditions will defeat the purpose. Species that may require sweating are HACKBERRY, MAPLE, SERVICEBERRY, OAK, BIRCH, and ROSE. OUR LOCATION & HOURS If coming from the south or west, use the Brandon or Ashby exit from I-94. Inspiration Peak near Urbank and Millerville is a good landmark for those coming from the north or east. We are in a very rural location on a gravel road. Our normal hours are 8:00-4:30 Monday - Friday. During the spring planting season those hours are extended. You are welcome to stop anytime to pick up seedlings, see our facilities, place orders, etc. but we do recommend calling first to make sure we will be here.
