Offering summary World Tree Issuer: World Tree COP Inc. Minimum Subscription: $2750 CDN Shares issued: COP $1.10 / share Time to harvest: 10 years Tax-deferred status: RRSP and TFSA eligible Investment highlights World Tree COP is offering the opportunity to invest in sustainable timber production in North America and Costa Rica. The Program is based on the Empress Splendor tree, the fastest growing hardwood tree in the world. Downside risks are mitigated through geographically dispersed plantations. Management team with over 30 years experience growing Empress Splendor trees. Trees are managed and cared for by experienced farmers, reducing the upfront costs of land, labour and maintenance. COP 2017 shareholders receive 50% of the company profits from the harvest. Investment is eligible for RRSP and TFSA tax benefits.
Impact investing where your dollars make a difference Offset your carbon footprint for life Protect our native forests Invest to build long term wealth
Are you investing for impact? Are you looking for an opportunity to create a positive social or environmental impact while at the same time generating a financial return? That makes you an impact investor. Investors in World Tree COP are directly improving the planet by cleaning up the air, offsetting their lifetime carbon footprint and protecting our native forests. World Tree COP intends to plant over 200,000 Empress Splendor trees as part of our 2017 program. Empress Splendor trees are the fastest growing hardwood trees in the world and absorb 11 times more carbon than any other tree. Within just 10 years they can be harvested and sold for lumber. The profits from the sale of this valuable lumber will be shared with all the participants in the program. This program may be for you if... You are seeking an alternative to oil, gas and mining and other environmentally destructive investments. You are saving for the future and can wait 10 years for a return. You are looking for an RRSP or TFSA eligible program. You wish to diversify your portfolio. You are an investor looking specifically to impact climate change.
Why invest in trees? A finite resource that has consistently increased in value Lumber is in high demand and short supply Trees are not affected by market sentiment Trees physically grow, increasing in size and value every year As long as the sun shines and the rain rains, trees just keep on growing Billionnaire timber investor Jeremy Grantham on why he invests in trees.
Demand for wood is rising The average North American consumes the equivalent of a 100 foot tree every year and the United Nations forecasts that world demand for wood will double by At the same time, the supply of wood is decreasing. Trees take a long time to grow and we are not keeping up with demand. Timber prices are historically strong Timber has been a historically strong investment option. Timber has increased in value at a rate 3% higher than inflation for the last 90 years. Timber investments have outperformed the stock market (S&P 500) for the last 100 years. The timber industry predicts a surge in prices. Timber, a best kept secret Until now timber investing has been unavailable to the average Canadian investor. Most timber investments require significant funding to buy land and manage the trees and then you have a 20+ year hold waiting for your trees to grow. World Tree s Carbon Offset Program allows regular people to invest in timber and receive returns in just 10 years. 8 Empress Splendor is a variety of Paulownia. World Tree has chosen this particular species based on its speed of growth and the quality of wood that is produced. The Empress Splendor is non-invasive, non-gmo and responds best to organic farming methods. The Empress tree the World s fastest growing hardwood
Record breaking results The Empress Splendor tree, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as officially amazing, is the fastest growing hardwood tree in the world. It reaches maturity in 7-10 years when it can be harvested for lumber. It also sequesters 11 times more carbon than any other tree. World Tree is planting and growing Empress Splendor trees using a network of experienced farmers to generate income and offset millions of tons of carbon in the process. Fastest growing hardwood tree in the world. Reaches maturity within 10 years. Sequesters 11 times more carbon than any other tree. Produces a light, strong hardwood. Non-GMO, non-invasive. Regrows from the stump after harvest. Responds well to organic farming methods. Root 2 months 10 years
A unique partnership between investors, farmers and World Tree
How the Carbon Offset Program works Our program has two primary objectives: Generate income from the harvest of Empress Splendor trees. Offset the carbon footprint of our investors. For every 2500 shares purchased in 2017, World Tree will plant 1 acre of Empress Splendor trees. Investors receive COP 2017 shares in the company, which entitles them to a 50% share of the company profits upon harvest of those trees in ten years. 1 acre of Empress Splendor trees will offset your carbon footprint for 50 years. Our farmers make it possible The Empress Splendor trees are planted and managed by World Tree certified farmers. They provide the land and take care of the trees using their own time and resources. We choose farmers based on their experience and the suitability of the land (rainfall, soil, elevation and temperature). Our farmers are based in Western Canada, select regions in the USA and Costa Rica. Planting in diverse locations allows us to spread our investment risk. Farmers are trained, educated and supported by World Tree. We visit them on site for planting and they file bi-annual reports on the growth and status of their trees. The farmers receive 50% of the income from the sale of the lumber. The other half comes back to World Tree and we share our profits with our investors.
Paulownia a beautiful, useful hardwood Empress Splendor (Paulownia) has been widely used in the Orient for over 1000 years. It is a source of strong, lightweight lumber that is straight grained and silky to the touch.
Lumber properties Blonde timber with a long straight grain. Air dries quickly with low shrinkage and does not easily warp, crack or deform. Comparable in strength to other commercial woods such as pine, ash, birch and maple. One of the highest strength to weight ratios of any wood. Can be peeled for veneer at up to 1/32 of an inch thickness. Easy to plane, cut and carve with little splitting or chipping. Highly water resistant. Uses include airplane, surfboard and sailboats, furniture, musical instruments, log homes, coffins, molding, veneers, and packaging.
Return on investment what we do to generate a profit
We sell the lumber you share the profits Investors in the 2017 COP program receive 50% of the company profits from the harvest of the 2017 season trees (i.e. trees planted as a result of investments in 2017). There are two factors that affect the income from the harvest: Volume of lumber volume of lumber x price = income 1 acre of Empress Splendor trees that have been well maintained produce approximately 30,000 board feet of lumber. Price per board foot The current selling price ranges between $3 and $14 per board foot, depending on the quality and finish of the wood. The table below shows the potential total income to the company from 1 acre of trees, as a product of these two factors. Examples of potential income to the company from 1 acre of trees Selling Price Board foot/acre $1 $3 $5 $10 5,000 $2,500 $7,500 $25,000 $35,000 15,000 $7,500 $22,500 $37,500 $75,000 30,000 $15,000 $45,000 $75,000 $150,000 There may be expenses from the harvest, milling and preparation of the lumber (although these costs are normally paid by the buyer). Profits after harvest expenses will be shared: 50% to World Tree and 50% to the investors. NOTE: We can t predict the future or what will happen to the price of lumber in years to come. These figures have not been independently audited and show a range of estimated results. Please refer to our Offering Memorandum for more details on risks and results.
Profit for the planet do good with your investment dollars
Who are you really supporting with your investments? Hidden inside of most Canadian retirement savings plans are fossil fuel companies that emit huge amounts of carbon. The World Tree Carbon Offset Program provides a way to fight climate change, protect our forests and bring resilience back to the land. It provides a way to give back while you make a return on your investment. Reduce your carbon footprint The world s climate scientists tell us there is no longer any question that climate change is happening at an alarming rate. A 2014 White House economic report warned of increasing storms, heat waves, severe droughts, wild fires, rising sea levels, severe storm damage and acidification of the oceans. The average Canadian produces 20 tons of carbon a year. All this carbon is going into the atmosphere and is a direct cause of global warming. Empress Splendor trees absorb 11 times more carbon than any other tree. One acre of trees will capture 1030 tons of carbon within 10 years. Participating in the World Tree 2017 Carbon Offset Program will offset your carbon footprint for the next 50 years. Protect our native forests and revitalize the land Native forests are being destroyed at the rate of 20 football fields a minute. To protect our forests we need a fast-growing, renewable source of timber. World Tree s plantation based timber provides a solution to the ever-increasing demand for wood. Empress Splendor trees bring nutrients and life back to even the most impoverished soil and will repair the damage caused by crops such as pine and tobacco. Planting trees creates natural wind-breaks and reduces the impact of severe weather events, providing resilience to climate change.
A long way to grow steps we take to protect your investment
Protecting your investment All investments carry risks and we advise you to read our Offering Memorandum so that you can understand both the risks and rewards involved with this program. One of the biggest risk factors is crop failure, either due to severe weather or because a farmer is unable to care for the trees. For this reason, World Tree plants the trees across dozens of farms many thousands of miles apart. If anything should happen to one stand of trees, this will not have a significant impact on the overall return. The Empress Splendor trees are not genetically modified. We advise our farmers on organic farming methods and not to use chemical pesticides. Empress Splendor trees are great for intercropping. In Costa Rica we are intercropping very successfully with shade-grown coffee plants. World Tree has also created a contingency fund to deal with any unexpected issues that arise and will replace trees that get damaged. Participating farmers are carefully chosen for their experience growing Empress Splendor trees and their commitment to the long term success of the program. World Tree visits every farmer. We are on site when they plant and we work hand in hand with them every step of the way to ensure a profitable experience for everyone involved. Protecting the land World Tree only plants non-invasive varieties of Empress Splendor trees. We use sterile mother-stock so that the trees are unable to propagate themselves. We plant only on land that is fallow or has been set aside for crops. No clear-cutting!
These tree huggers mean business and are changing the world
About World Tree Wendy Burton, CEO of World Tree COP, is also the founder and president of World Tree Technologies - a US company that has spent the last 15 years promoting the properties of the Empress Splendor tree. Alex Jay, our Plantation Manager, is a professional forester with over 30 years experience in natural resource management. He has extensive international experience in Empress Splendor plantation projects and has grown large scale plantations all the way from tissue culture to timber. The idea for the Carbon Offset Program came together in Investors this year will be participating in our third year of planting and will benefit from our know-how, network of farmers and on-the-ground experience with the Empress Splendor tree. Management team with 30 years experience. In 2016, World Tree developed carbon-offset plantations with 25 farmers. Established relationships with over 100 farmers in Canada, USA and Costa Rica. We have developed sophisticated computer models of ideal growing sites. Featured on Oprah, American Environmental Review and Modern Farmer. Proprietary growers guides, protocols and planting methods. Offices in USA, Canada and Costa Rica. Established import protocols for Canada, United States and Costa Rica. Our Mission We are transforming the planet by providing the Empress Splendor tree as a powerful solution to the world s carbon footprint. World Tree envisions a future where farmers are appreciated for the significant role they play and people are inspired by their contribution. The World Tree 2017 Carbon Offset Program makes it possible for everyone to offset their impact on the environment and to generate wealth for themselves, their families and their communities.
