1 THE GREAT 2016 FIREWOOD SHOOT OUTTM TRAVEL TO THE OCTOBER EVENT IN CAMBRIDGE, OHIO! It seems impossible that nearly two years have passed since the last Great Firewood Shoot-Out, but Walter, J.R., and I have been busy laying the groundwork for the event. This year, we will broaden the field with even more splitters and firewood processors 19 machines in all. Most are returning to see if they can do even better than they did in With engine upgrades, more efficient hydraulics, and two years of design tweaks, this is bound to be a very competitive event. We ve also made room for some new machines with highly innovative designs. By the time you read this, over 20 cords of loglength wood will have been ordered, travel arrangements made, and seminar materials prepared. One of the lessons we have learned is that early October in Ohio is about as predictable as a herd of hyperactive cats, so come prepared for rain, snow, windstorms, and temperatures in the 90s as we may well encounter any or all of these during the two days of the Shoot-Out. The range of machines guarantees that there will be something for just about everyone interested in firewood, from the diminutive 6.5-hp SuperSplit to the 99-hp Multitek that split 6.5 cords per hour in the 2014 event. Every one of these machines is 100% stock. No modifications are allowed beyond options that the manufacturers make available to their customers. Some will be operated by professionals who depend on their machines for a living. Others will be run by salesmen, engineers, or even company presidents. There will be no shortcuts or compromises on safety. We require full safety gear, and that operators work exactly the same way they expect their customers to run the equipment. In other BY words, this will be a real-world sideby-side comparison. They typically fill up quickly, so register early! If you need some firewood for the coming winter, be sure to stay for the Sunday auction. All the firewood cut and split at the Shoot-Out, as well as firewood and lumber cut by the exhibitors, will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Log-a-Load for Kids charity. If the Shoot-Out doesn t give you time to see the machines as closely as you would like, there will be plenty of time to see the machines close up and personal at the exhibitors booths. There will also be sawmills, chain saws, skidders, forwarders, grapple trucks, mulchers, tub grinders, conveyers, and just about every other sort of wood-handling and -processing equipment. The Paul Bunyan Show itself features ongoing seminars on chain saw safety and directional felling, chain saw carving, and a safe place for youngsters to hang out and play. The highly competitive Timbersports competition is always a crowd pleaser, and if you ve never seen grapple loaders play tic-tac-toe with logs, this is your chance! Of course, Independent Sawmill & Woodlot Management magazine will have a booth where you can pull up a stump and sit a spell. 2 AUTOMATED BIOMASS SYSYEMS AUTOSPLIT Automated Biomass Systems AutoSplit firewood splitter will be easy to spot at this year s Firewood Shoot-Out. Using a box splitter with one horizontal and three vertical blades, the machine shuttles the piece through the wedges, then back for the next split. This splits logs into uniform 4-1/2-inch blocks without having to return blocks for resplitting. Designer Matt Timmins says that he came up with the concept after running a commercial firewood business for several years but found the split pieces were too big for many of his customers. The AutoSplit uses a 20-hp Honda GX, and has a cycle time of 5 seconds slightly longer if the 2-stage pump kicks in for tough knots and forks. The splitter comes standard with a log lifter, capable of lifting up to 500 pounds and allowing the operator to stage several logs at a time. In addition to the splitter, Matt will demonstrate the AutoFine bark-and-debris remover and a 12-foot conveyer. The AutoSplit is targeted for commercial firewood producers, but Matt noted that many are sold for residential applications. They are built in Marathon, New York, and carry a 3-year warranty. Options to be used...standard BELL S MACHINING, WELDING & HYDRAULICS BELL S 4000 Brent Easton, owner of Bell s Machining, Welding & Hydraulics, of Perth, Ontario, began building firewood processors nine years ago when the owner of a firewood company asked him to build a firewood processor to his specifications. The machine needed to be easy to use, rugged, and easy to repair in the field. The resulting machine was so successful, that Bell s now offers seven models. Their model 4000 uses a 44-inch circle to cut wood up to 20 inches in diameter. The 66-hp Cat diesel engine powers the hydraulics to run the cutoff saw, splitter, conveyer, and live deck. A single joystick controls all functions. The log feed automatically stops the log for the desired firewood length. The splitting cycle is automated. Once the block of wood falls into the splitting chamber, a push of the joystick button puts 30 tons of force to the 5-inch splitting piston for a 3.5-second splitting cycle. While the hydraulic cylinder is crushing the wood through the wedge, the operator advances the log and makes the next cut, so the machine is constantly cutting and splitting. A variety of wedges are available, including a box style to produce square firewood blocks for easy stacking. An operator s cab and extended live deck are optional. Brent is proud of his creations. Built specifically to do large wood, Bell s Model 6000 firewood processor comes standard with a 54-inch circular blade, and a massive 6-inch 42-ton splitter cylinder. A sliding shelf supports the firewood during cutting, and makes sure it falls consistently into the splitting chamber. The Bell s exclusive single joystick control is user friendly, and the auto cycle splitter allows simultaneous cutting and splitting. For towing, it includes standard tandem 7,000-pound capacity axles with trailer brakes, and trailer lights to keep you legal going down the road. Maximum log diameter is 23.5 inches and maximum log length is 30 feet. It comes standard with a 3-strand live deck. It features a 91-hp CAT diesel engine and can produce up to 4 full cords of hardwood per hour. Options to be used...standard BRUTE FORCE MANUFACTURING LLC HD According to Clayton Szydel, owner of Brute Force, the Brute Force HD features a rugged design, and comes standard with a number of features that are options on other firewood processors. The machine uses a hydraulic-powered chain saw capable of cutting off logs up to 26 inches in diameter. To show it to its best advantage, the machine at the Shoot-Out will run with a 44-hp Kubota engine that gives the splitting ram a 5.2-second cycle time. Szydel also noted that the rounded chute design works well with the crooked logs commonly encountered in his home state of Wisconsin. Standard equipment for the Brute Force includes a 3-strand live deck that is raised and lowered hydraulically, an integrated 14-foot hydraulic-operated chain-stacking conveyer that swings 3 feet left and right for easy loading, and joystick controls to operate the hydraulic saw, clamp, live deck, and log infeed conveyer. The HD firewood processor comes with a 4-way, hydraulically adjustable wedge, with 6-, 8-, and 10-way wedges also available. The standard towing features include torsion suspension with electric brakes, and integrated taillights. According to Szydel, the HD is designed with the commercial firewood producer in mind. BRUTE FORCE MANUFACTURING LLC HD Clayton Szydel got his start in the wood fuel business building wood furnaces, and recently moved into the manufacture of firewood processors, as well. The Brute Force will make its first Shoot-Out run this year powered by its standard 32-hp Kohler big block gas engine. Using a hydraulic chain saw for cutoff, the machine can process up to 18 inches in diameter. The standard 2-strand live deck can hold logs up to 12 feet long, and converts into a log lift for operations without loaders. The integrated 10-foot, hydraulic-operated chain conveyer allows you to easily load firewood into a trailer or truck box. Joystick controls operate the hydraulic saw, clamp, live deck, and log infeed conveyer. Standard features include a hydraulically operated 4-way wedge, electric bar oiler, and hydraulic oil cooler. Other standard features include last log measuring grid, integrated taillights, and round log trough for better handling of crooked logs. The deck and chute fold in quickly, and the processor is DOT legal for highway towing. Although Szydel says this is an introductory machine, he stresses that it is built with the same design features as the larger Brute Force firewood processors, and carries a one-year warranty. 4 CORD KING CORD KING CS18-30 Cord-King will enter its CS18-30 firewood processor in this year s Shoot- Out. The 40-inch-diameter carbide-tooth circle saw cuts through a maximum 18-inch-diameter log, and handles logs up to 30 feet long. Power is provided by a 60-hp Cat diesel engine, and at 6,500 pounds, it is easy to tow to the job site. The design allows several simultaneous operations. As the hydraulic piston pushes the wood through the splitter, the operator can advance the log and cut the next piece. The splitting ram retracts just in time for the firewood bolt to fall into the splitting chamber. To take some of the workload off the operator, the machine has an automatic log stop, automatic clamping, and autocycle splitter that provides a cycle time of 3 seconds. Other options they will be showing include a folding hydraulic log deck and an offloading conveyer with swiveling tires. At the 2014 Shoot-Out, the CS18-30 cut and split a cord of wood in just over 9 minutes. This year, they re out to do even better. The 99-hp John Deere engine and 48-inch circle cutoff blade proved more than capable of slicing through the capacity-size logs they were given at the 2014 Shoot-Out as it pushed 20-inch-diameter chunks of firewood through the 6-way wedge with 29 tons of force in an incredibly fast 2.5 seconds cut to cut. Once the log length is set, the infeed automatically advances the log the correct distance and in about one second, the chop saw cuts the firewood bolt. This is one machine to keep an eye on for those who are looking for a high-production machine. Cord King rates the CS20-40 at 8 cords per hour, but they managed to crank out just over 11 cords per hour at the 2014 event. Can they do even better? We will soon find out! According to plant manager Dave Kravacek, Cord King prides itself on manufacturing splitters with the highest tonnage output and a top-of-the-line warranty. DYNA PRODUCTS DYNA SC14 Dyna is best known for its range of value-driven, heavy-duty firewood processors. This will be Dyna s third Shoot-Out, and they are bringing back two of their firewood processors. According to company founder Nathan Miller, the SC14 uses a 34-hp Caterpillar diesel engine to run the pitch hydraulic chain saw cutoff and put 18,000 pounds of splitting force onto logs up to 16 inches in diameter and 22 inches long. The SC14 is rated to produce up to 3 cords per hour. According to Nathan, there are a few refinements to the machine including redesigned hydraulics for faster, smoother operation. The operator controls the processor with two joysticks and one splitter lever. The machine can achieve a 7-second cycle splitting time and 5 seconds with the optional booster valve. The outfeed conveyer is an optional 12-foot or 14-foot conveyer. When it is time to move the machine, the optional conveyer and live deck fold up for compact storage and transport. The SC14 is designed to be user friendly and easily maneuvered in tight places, and takes about 10 minutes to set up. This makes the machine popular with tree care businesses, homeowners, and people who want to run a small firewood business. 5 DYNA PRODUCTS DYNA SC16 Dyna s SC16 is geared toward commercial firewood producers. The 51-hp Caterpillar turbo diesel powers the wood through at a company-rated 3 to 4 cords per hour enough to keep several operators busy loading logs and stacking firewood. The hydraulic ram allows for up to 28-inch-long logs. The 4-way or 6-way wedges move up and down on a hydraulic piston to split different diameters of wood, up to 18 inches. Dyna has refined the hydraulics, giving the processor even faster cutting times and smoother operation than the one demonstrated two years ago. The processor has an extra-wide outfeed table so that large pieces can be returned to the splitter for re-splitting. The SC16 offers an optional high-speed hydraulic piston motor for the saw, which has a 25-inch bar with a chain. The operator uses one lever to clamp the wood. As soon as the clamping pressure is established, the chain saw starts and cuts off the block of firewood. Hydraulic gauges for all functions make it easy to monitor the pressure at critical points in the machine. The machine is quick and easy to set up, and the folding design of the log deck and outfeed conveyer make it compact for easy towing and storage. This full-production machine features a 99-hp John Deere engine to cut and split logs up to 24 inches in diameter, 40 feet long. As you watch it in action at the Shoot-Out, look for this machine s unique shuttle grapple infeed system. Designed for crooked wood, a jaw on a track grabs the log and feeds it forward, then holds it in place for extra stability while cutting. The tip pan system holds the cutoff log so it falls consistently into the splitting chamber without jamming. With a 3-second block-toblock cycle time, Multitek rates the machine at a blazing 6 cords per hour. Multitek offers optional 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, or 16-way wedges, and will use the 8-way wedge at the Shoot-Out. There are a number of features under the hood that give this machine phenomenal performance. 7 MULTITEK NORTH AMERICA LLC MULTITEK 1620 ss T he 1620 will return to the 2016 Shoot-out. A notable feature about this mill is that the circle saw blade moves straight down on a track, like a guillotine. According to Multitek, this system eliminates side-to-side weight transfer, and puts less stress on the machine. The 40-inch saw blade turns at 1400 rpm and has inserted teeth for easy sharpening and replacement. The hydraulic controls allow the operator to cut and split at the same time, for a cycle time of 5 seconds. The 44-hp (33kw) Kubota turbo powers the hydraulics. The 3-strand hydraulic log deck is ruggedly built and utilizes Multitek s exclusive log flippers to aid the log entering the trough. Machine is available with 4-, 6-, or 8-way hydraulic adjustable wedges featuring Multitek s exclusive spring-loaded wedge technology. Log capacity is 18 inches in diameter by 20 feet long. Options to be used...6-way wedge OESCO/TAJFUN TAJFUN RCA 480 JOY Howard Boyden of Oesco describes the new Tajfun (pronounce like typhoon ) 480 Joy as the big brother to the 400 Joy, which has participated in a number of Firewood Shoot- Outs. Someone familiar with the 400 could operate the 480 without any problem, Howard explained. The difference is that the 480 has a 24-inch bar that can slice through logs up to 19 inches in diameter, and 20 feet in length. With a minimum PTO power of 35 hp, this machine is geared down slightly from the 400 and has a larger 25-ton ram for splitting with a slightly longer cycle time, but the increased size capacity makes it more productive. Boyden pointed out that both Tajfun processers meet strict European safety standards. The entire cutoff and splitting mechanisms are totally enclosed, and all movement stops when the side panel is opened. Another thing to watch for is its portability. Since it mounts on the 3-point hitch of a tractor, all his team needs to do is to drive the tractor to the Shoot-Out area next to its pile of wood, and it will be ready to go. Will it outperform its little brother? We will soon find out! OESCO/TAJFUN TAJFUN RCA 400 JOY The Tajfun RCA 400 Joy is Tajfun's flagship firewood processor. All basic machine functions log feeding and clamping, cutting, splitting, and splitting-wedge height adjustment are controlled via a single joystick, allowing one-hand operation. Power to the cutting chain is clutch-controlled allowing for stopping of the blade between cuts. The cutoff saw is a standard chain on a 17-inch bar, capable of handling a 10 Sawmill & Woodlot 16-inch-diameter log. The 400 Joy has several innovations that keep the work moving smoothly. For example, the firewood is held by a pair of flippers until the cut is complete, so that the wood falls straight down into the splitting chamber. The 16 tons of force behind the hydraulic ram can run any firewood length from 8 inches to 20 inches with a 3-second splitting time. The RCA 400 Joy to be shown at the Shoot-Out is a PTO-powered unit. While a 35-hp tractor can run the hydraulics, it takes a tractor with a 3-point hitch capable of lifting 2,700 pounds to transport it. This makes it one of the most portable processors. Just drive the tractor to where you want to cut and split firewood, set it down, and get to work. According to U.S. distributor Howard Boyden, The 400 is designed for ease of operation and to be user friendly. I ve been at the last two Shoot-Outs and never taken a time-out yet. 8 TIMBERWOLF MANUFACTURING TIMBERWOLF Pro MPX After a stellar performance in the 2014 Manufacturer...Timberwolf Mfg. Power...45-hp Mitsubishi Firewood Shoot-Out, Cutoff...25-in. bar chain saw, gauge Timberwolf is rolling in its Cycle time...5 sec. Pro MPX model this year. It Log loading...live deck shares many of the features Max diameter...22 in. of the other models, so it Options to be used...standard should also have a smooth run, even on the toughest logs. Designed for use by a single operator, its 45-hp Mitsubishi diesel powers it through logs with a 5-second cycle time. The system uses twin two-section 22 GPM hydraulic pumps, which allow the live deck, infeed, clamp, cutoff saw, wedge lift, 20-ton splitter, and conveyer to work independently. The patented Top Roll infeed system handles odd or crooked logs with ease, as it moves them from the live deck to the 25-inch hydraulic chain saw. The processor comes standard with a live deck and 6-way adjustable splitter. The log feed has a unique top roller with cleats that moves crooked logs up to 22 inches in diameter into the cutoff chamber and clamps them down for cutting at the same time. The infeed conveyer takes logs up to 14 feet long. This year, you will be able to see the Pro MPX with the 6-way adjustable wedge, and outfeed conveyer. According to Timberwolf, the Pro MPX can produce a cord plus of wood per hour with a single operator, and is geared for businesses producing 100 to 150 cords per year. TIMBERWOLF MANUFACTURING TIMBERWOLF TW 5FC The Timberwolf 5 firewood splitter is returning to the 2016 Shoot-Out. This year, they will be rolling out the TW 5FC model. This splitter uses a Honda GX 340 engine sitting on a 6.5-inch steel beam. The 4-inch cylinder can split firewood up to 24 inches long with 20 tons of force. This is Timberwolf s production splitter, and features a 4-way adjustable wedge, and a 2-stage hydraulic pump that quickly moves the pushblock when there is no load, then kicks down to a slow-speed, high-force mode when it is splitting the wood, for a 6-second cycle time. The 15-gallon hydraulic tank keeps the oil cool, which extends the life of the components and provides a smoother operation. The optional log lifter picks up firewood logs up to 500 pounds, and is a real back-saver. The table grate allows the bark to fall through, and holds the split wood for a second pass, if it needs to be split again. According to Timberwolf, the TW 5FC is the perfect match for woodlot owners, arborists, and firewood processors. SUPERSPLITTER INC. SUPERSPLIT SuperSplit amazed and delighted onlookers with its unique splitter at the 2012 Shoot-Out. The machine develops a splitting force of up to 20 tons (depending on model) without hydraulics by using the momentum of a pair of flywheels that power a rack-and-pinion gear. When the operator engages the gear, the rack moves out and back, splitting the wood with a cycle time of only 3 seconds. This arrangement allows the use of a smaller, more fuel efficient motor, and eliminates issues with hydraulic pumps and lines. Continually refining and improving the machine design, SuperSplit is introducing a larger modular production table. But the exciting news is that they will unveil a solar power option for their machine. A solar-powered wood splitter is a first for the Shoot-Out as would be sunny weather. According to Scott Eifler of Wood Beaver, the new machine has thicker metal and more reinforcement in high-stress areas, making it even more durable. It also has better access for service points, and has been upgraded to a 26-hp Kohler 749 engine. Although this Model 16 is designed for homeowners, tree services, and small firewood producers, it has some impressive features usually found on larger machines. It features an 18-inch chain saw cutoff that can slice through a 12-inch hardwood log in 2 seconds. The hydraulic ram has a 17-ton splitting force with a 5-second cycle time, and can handle logs up to 24 inches long. The axe edge wedge reduces splitting forces and help keep cycle times fast. Wood Beaver rates this machine at 3 cords per hour, but exceeded 4 cords per hour in Missing from the Wood Beaver will be the usual pile of sawdust from the cutoff saw. Wood Beaver will roll out its new chip catcher, which will allow the chips to be collected and sold for animal bedding, fuel, or compost material. In the past two years, they have done some fine-tuning to the basic machine, including the switch to a 37-hp Kohler engine. The splitter uses an innovative 2-ram system. One ram does most of the work with 25,000 pounds of force, but a second 25,000-pound ram kicks in to double the force when it encounters a heavy load. Typical splitting cycle time is a quick 3 to 3.5 seconds for an output of 4+ cords per hour. According to Scott Eifler of Wood Beaver, the machine s thin splitting wedges and efficient hydraulic system require less power and uses less hydraulic fluid than firewood processors with comparable output. The 25-inch chain saw is capable of cutting logs up to 22 inches in diameter into chunks up to 24 inches long. The hydraulic system keeps the operation simple. The axe edge wedge is adjustable and can be changed between 4-way, 6-way, and 8- way way in just a few seconds.
