1 LESLIE M. ROCHE Department of Plant Sciences, Mail Stop 1, One Shields Avenue, Davis, California Phone: (530) , Fax: (530) , EDUCATION Ph.D. Ecology, University of California, Davis, June Cattle Grazing and Provisioning of Ecosystem Services in Sierra Nevada Mountain Meadows. Advisor: Dr. Kenneth W. Tate. M.S. Horticulture and Agronomy, University of California, Davis, September Effects of cattle, oak canopy, and grazing intensity on Nassella pulchra in an oak woodland-annual grassland system. Advisor: Dr. Kenneth W. Tate. B.S. Agricultural Management and Rangeland Resources with highest honors, University of California, Davis, June RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Postdoctoral Research, UC Davis, 9/09 present. Developed research proposals, secured funding, and led field and laboratory research teams on an interdisciplinary project, Prescribed grazing to restore rangeland soil quality, plant diversity, water quality, and agricultural productivity. Also conceived, secured funding, and led the development of an ecosystem-service based state and transition model to assist managers in simultaneously managing for multiple outcomes. Communicated research results to scientific community and stakeholder groups via multiple interdisciplinary conferences. Doctoral Research, UC Davis, 6/06 5/11. Conceived and carried out multiple research projects as part of the Yosemite Toad Adaptive Management Project. Investigated fine spatial scale drivers, specifically water quality and cover, of toad habitat selection in cattle-grazed and ungrazed Sierran meadows. Designed and conducted longitudinal, cross-sectional survey of livestock utilization and toad occupancy across 24 montane meadows. Combined novel experimental design and analysis to investigate hydrologic-soil-plant community dynamics across grazed montane meadows. Masters Research, UC Davis, 8/04 6/06. Project 1: Developed independent study of oak canopy and livestock grazing effects on a native bunchgrass, Nassella pulchra, in an oak woodland annual grassland system. Led research team in identification of study sites and data collection. Developed and managed databases, analyzed and interpreted results, and communicated research to scientific community. Project 2: Co-led design and implementation of meadow-scale studies for the Yosemite Toad Adaptive Management Project. Led crews in installing equipment and collecting baseline data on livestock utilization, plant community composition, water table dynamics, and physical and chemical toad habitat characteristics. TEACHING EXPERIENCE Co-Instructor, Applied Statistical Modeling of Environmental Data, UC Davis 1/11-3/11. Collaboratively designed new, advanced statistical analysis class for graduate students in the environmental sciences. Prepared and presented lectures and led lab/discussion sections. Composed and
2 Page 2 evaluated take home assignments. Co-Instructors: Dr. Andrew Latimer and Dr. Kenneth Tate, Department of Plant Sciences. Teaching Assistant, Multivariate Systems and Modeling, UC Davis 10/09-12/09. Prepared and presented lectures and discussion sessions on multiple statistical analyses. Designed biweekly quizzes, midterm exam, and final exam. Evaluated and maintained student records, and provided frequent feedback and assessment to students. Dr. Emilio Laca, Department of Plant Sciences. Guest Lecturer, Rangeland Ecology, UC Davis 4/08. Lecture Title: Grazing Ecology and Management in Montane Meadow Systems, Dr. Kevin Rice, Department of Plant Sciences. Teaching Assistant, Introduction to Environmental Plants, UC Davis 10/07-12/07. Instructed students in identification of urban landscape plants in lab and discussion sections. Designed weekly quizzes and lab final and collected and prepared class material for discussion sections. Dr. Truman Young, Department of Plant Sciences. PUBLICATIONS AND MANUSCRIPTS Roche, L.M., B.
