ACP EU ENERGY FACILITY, LWF Uganda Title of the action: Increase access to energy efficient stoves among rural households in and enhance local reforestation efforts to ensure the sustainability of trees as an energy source The Lutheran World Federation Department for World Service Uganda Country Program
Project objectives Total duration of theactionti Objectives of the action 48 months Overall Objective: Contribute to environmental sustainability and the social and economic development of rural households Specific Objective 1: Improve access to and increase use of local energy saving Rocket Lorena Stoves (RLSs) among households in Kitgum and Pader districts Specific Objective 2: Increase tree planting practices and environmental awareness among 9,600 households and 1,920 school children in Kitgum and Pader districts
Area of focus Reduced release and/increased uptake of carbon emissions Energy efficient i cook stoves Rocket Lorena stoves fire shielded portable stoves Tree planting practices hh woodlots and orchards Community woodlots Ornamental and boundary tree planting
Fire shielded portable Stoves Fire shielded portable stoves
Rocket Lorena stove
Transfer of skills/technology Initial training of CERPs/stove constructors on stove construction Exposure visit to areas already using stove (GIZ is the lead agency) Quality control through strict monitoring by staff Quarterly review meetings with CERPs to discuss progress and challenges hll
Dissemination Strategies Two strategic approaches 1. Extension system by use of community based stove constructors here referred to as CERPs 2. Business approach where other persons are trained to construct on commercial basis (trading centers)
Dissemination cont d Community sensitization (local FM radio, community meetings and other fora) Integration into other on going community projects (livelihoods, lih water and sanitation, ti HIV and AIDS) Door to door construction Introduction of the business model Involvement of other stakeholders LG
Community sensitization Dissemination cont d
Lessons learnt a) Working with active poor rather than just vulnerable creates lasting impact and is self scaling b) Involvement of leaders at all levels from the top to the grassroots is very critical for the success c) As an exit strategy, more funds should be allocated to do participatory monitoring and evaluation, with quarterly reviews that will enable the community to be more involved d) Charcoal burning practices are difficult toeliminate/control. i t l As a suggestion, targeting charcoal dealers some tax that can be channeled directly to tree nursery operators should be considered e) Communities need a lot of sensitization on behavior change in relation to energy efficiency. Some households still use both (three stones and EES)
Lessons leant Using community based resource persons facilitates quicker technology uptake if they demonstrate People keep changing cooking pots depending on what they intend to cook at a particular time. And this affects stove efficiency
Specific challenges Simple maintenance guidelines are sometimes forgotten
Specific challenges Dependency syndrome due to a long period of humanitarian aid in Northern Uganda Stove constructors need facilitation yet many household either cannot afford or are reluctant to pay. This is related to dependency syndrome. Low literacy in the community. Some of the identified stove constructors do not stick to the right specifications, leading to energy inefficiency There still many households without complete kitchens. This limits the stove type to use Houses/kitchens with bamboo walls could easily catch fire from the hot chimney. This also limits the stove type Overtime, households shift to one pot cooking in RLS and this leads to energy loss Thanks for listening
