6 National Initiatives and Focus Areas Strategic Tree Planting Initiative Competitive Cost-share program to plant trees for energy conservation Objective is to plant trees to reduce energy consumption in homes and businesses Implemented through a grant to the Arbor Day Foundation Initiative will engage utility companies along with local organizations to plant trees in priority areas

7 National Initiatives and Focus Areas Urban Forest Health Initiative UCF and Forest Health Protection staffs entered into a cooperative agreement with TNC Implement a comprehensive forest health program in 3 cities TNC will establish a national steering committee to help guide implementation

8 National Initiatives and Focus Areas 3. Urban Tree Inventory Community level inventories aide site specific management & response decisions. 2. Engage Priority Communities High Risk Communities become part of a Monitoring and Response network. 1. Monitor in High Risk Areas... Identify Communities at High Risk from invasive insect and diseases. 4. Look for known Pests As part of local tree inventory and maintenance The Result Effective and Efficient Urban Tree Protection from Invasives 7. Identify Unknown Pests... Clear procedures for citizens to submit pest samples is key 5. Tools, Information Management, and Analysis Develop tools that will help with collecting and analyzing data in standard formats. This will facilitate aggregating local tree and pest risk data for analysis of pest risk, trends, and management needs at multiple scales. 6. Public Engagement... Citizen involvement is critical. Several successful approaches can help guide State s citizen engagement development.

9 National Initiatives and Focus Areas Southern University Partnership Through an MOU the FS and Southern University established an on-campus FS liaison to facilitate training and career development of SU students Established an on-campus urban forestry demonstration project

10 National Initiatives and Focus Areas Urban Waters Federal Partnership Collaboration between 13 federal agencies to revitalize urban waters and the communities surrounding them Currently there are 7 pilot projects to date with up to 10 more selected for 2013 Consistent with the President s Partnership for Sustainable Communities and advances the America s Great Outdoors Initiative

11 National Initiatives and Focus Areas Vibrant Cities Sustainable Urban Forest Coalition SUFC is coordinating an effort to advance the recommendations of the National Call to Action Task Force Areas of focus will include: Develop a Vibrant Cities clearinghouse Coordinate a communications strategy Convene national funders and partners Monitor and evaluate efforts

12 Regional Activities I-Tree and air pollution (R8, MS) Urban Forestry Technology Transfer Activities (R8) Helping to define a Framework for Ecosystem Analysis in the South Committed resources to the Northeast Urban Forest Strike Team capacity building on Southern Region model (NA)

13 Regional Activities The Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition and the Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association sponsored a successful workshop Planning the Urban Forest to reach planners, landscape architects and city officials (R4) WA State Dept. of Natural Resources leads a project to provide veterans job training, skills, and experience with tree planting, tree maintenance, urban forest restoration, and removal of invasive urban plants (R6)

14 Program Direction Document Proposed Next Steps: 1. USFS WO will provide a draft to NASF Urban and Community Forestry Committee for comment 2. FS Program Direction Team will incorporate comments and solicit feedback from the rest of the UCF Federal Coordinators 3. Regional Federal Coordinators UCF and State Foresters will present draft to State UCF Coordinators for comment 4. WO CF Director presents draft to Regional CF Directors for comment 5. Comments from State UCF Coordinators and CF Directors are incorporated 6. Draft program direction sent to NASF UCF Committee for final comment 7. Document finalized 8. Program Direction approved and co-signed by WO CF Director and Chair of NASF Urban Committee

15 CARS USFS Team has developed a draft of proposed changes to CARS to improve the quality of the data and outputs The UCF State Coordinators at the Partners Conference met to discuss a number of issues including CARS. Their comments are being incorporated into the initial draft When this is completed, the draft will be shared with NASF for comments
