2 ALABAMA DEMOCRAT - Parker Griffith REPUBLICAN - Governor Robert Bentley ALASKA REPUBLICAN - Governor Sean Parnall INDEPENDENT - Bill Walker Just as nurses, lawyers, and other professionals are licensed to practice in Alaska, cosmetology and barbering professionals should also continue to be licensed in Alaska. I believe State Boards are an effective way to uphold professional standards and feel it is important that cosmetology and barbering professionals and establishments are held accountable through State Boards. These are professional services and providers should be properly trained, experienced, licensed & insured. From a legal standpoint, no consumer of services is ever held to assume an at your own risk standard when there is proof of negligence. ARIZONA DEMOCRAT - Fred Duval Thank you for the opportunity to share my priorities for the state of Arizona. In order to give you a more comprehensive description of my positions on the issues facing our state. I have provided a short statement describing my stances, rather than replying to questions with a simple yes/no answer. I am running for governor because I want Arizona to be like it was when I first started my career here. Back then we worked together to solve the problems of Arizona families. Today our politicians are more interested in fighting, than fixing our schools and economy. Requiring barbers, cosmetologists, and hairdressers to be licensed is smart policy that has created a standard for safety and sanitation throughout the industry. Licensing establishes consumer confidence and has created a skilled profession that allows many to make a living. Deregulation would be devastating for those who have made a career in this field, there would be no accountability or transparency, and would put consumers at risk. As governor, I will veto any bill that eliminates occupational licensing and believe that beauty professionals should remain accountable through the state board. Thank you again for the opportunity to share my opinions about the issues facing Arizona. I believe that it is time for Arizona to elect a governor who is focused on creating jobs, improving education, and expanding opportunities for all Arizonans. Doing so empowers consumers and ensures integrity throughout the industry. Just like consumers expect to eat in clean, sanitary restaurants and get treated by properly licensed medical professionals, consumers expect the same standards from their beauty services. We must be careful not to go too far, but we must ensure the fundamental standards of safety consumers expect. Yes Consumers should bear some responsibility for their risks, but not solely.

OKLAHOMA DEMOCRAT - Joe Dorman There must be protections in the law to prevent frivolous lawsuits against owners, but there must also be accountability for negligent actions. Further, it provides consumers with a mechanism for promptly addressing complaints without costly litigation. I believe the adjudication of complaints and general oversight of these respective professions should remain the purview of the State Board of Barber Examiners and State Board of Cosmetology. It is incumbent upon the professional barber or cosmetologist to ensure the safety of consumers. The average consumer does not possess the training necessary to identify serious health and safety violations; therefore, it would be irresponsible to implement an at their own risk policy.

These professional licensing boards provide the public with a place that they can file complaints and resolve disputes. They also provide a layer of accountability for unscrupulous professionals who fail to follow industry standards. When the consumer visits a beauty professional, they expect that there are safeguards in place to protect their health. That s why we need to keep the state licensing board in place so enforce health and safety standards to protect members of the public. It is not the customer s fault so the customer should not be responsible for these risks. I believe that we should recognize and honor that work and the knowledge and safety and sanitation procedures that comes alongside with it. Accountability of this kind is very important to me, and as Governor, I will insist it in my administration and throughout the state of Wisconsin. It is common sense to require that professionals delivering services of this kind to be licensed consumers seeking these services should be able to trust that there are standards in place to ensure their safety and well-being.
