Did you know 90 % of the Estonians have been by the sea for leisure 43 % of the Estonians view the coastal water quality as a very big or rather big problem 69 % of the Estonians are worried about the Baltic Sea environment Source:Baltic Survey

PRESENTATION OUTLINE What is the state of the Baltic Sea? What can be done? How can it be done?

What is the state of the Baltic Sea?

THE BALTIC SEA 9 countries 85 million people Many preassures on the sea Vulnerable marine environment Little inflow of saline water Much inflow of freshwater Slow exchange of water One of the most polluted seas in the world Source: Helcom

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS? Human impact: Eutrophication (phosphorus and nitrogen) Hazardous substances Habitat destruction Overfishing Risk of oil spills

WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE BALTIC SEA? Human impact: eutrophication, biodiversity loss, hazardous substances (eg PCB:s, heavy metals) Source: Helcom

WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE BALTIC SEA? Only small parts in Gulf of Bothnia and Orther Bucht has good ecological status. Ecosystem so degraded that the capacity to deliver ecosystem services is hampered Scientific findings: great economic values at risk if no action is taken Source: Helcom 2014

WHAT CAUSES THE PROBLEMS? Nutrients (phosphorous and nitrogen) and hazardous substances enter the sea HUMAN ACTIVITY: Agriculture Waste water Ships Traffic Industries Overfishing -> Consumption & lifestyle

What can be done?

WHAT CAN BE DONE? 1. Improve waste water treatment 2. Reduce nutrient emissions from agriculture 3. Improve waste water treatment in scattered areas 4. Reduce emissions from shipping and boating 5. Reduce risk of oil spills 6. Raise awareness about the state of the Baltic Sea

How can it be done?

THE BALTIC SEA CHALLENGE (BSC) Action at the local level is key Water protection additional to legally binding obligations Healthy waters = competitiveness and welfare 200 partners: cities, companies, schools, NGO:s. For example: Tallinn City

EXAMPLE: AGRICULTURE City of Turku Aim: Decrease pollution and nutrients entering the waters Water pollution conditions for renting out agriculture land Buffer zones Wetlands, dams 100% organical farming on the city s land

EXAMPLE: WASTE WATER TREATMENT Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) Aim: Decrease nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) and chemicals from entering the water bodies Improving efficiency of waste water treatment plants (WWTP) Decreasing amounts of storm water to WWTP Improving waste water handling in scattered areas

EXAMPLE: STORM WATER MANAGEMENT Tallinn City Aim: Puryfying the water that enters Pirita Jõgi Tallinn botanical garden: Lepiku watercorse Natural storm water handling Finished by mid-july Constructed as part of the CITYWATER project

HOW CAN WE JOIN THE CHALLENGE? Sign the Baltic Sea Challenge declaration and Commit to at least one action for saving the Baltic Sea

WHY JOIN THE BALTIC SEA CHALLENGE? Learning from each other - exchanging ideas

WHY JOIN THE BALTIC SEA CHALLENGE? Seminars, networks, finding new partners

WHY JOIN THE BALTIC SEA CHALLENGE? Visibility: Facebook, website, newsletter

WHY JOIN THE BALTIC SEA CHALLENGE? Together we get seen

WHY JOIN THE BALTIC SEA CHALLENGE? and heard

WHY JOIN THE BALTIC SEA CHALLENGE? Funding opportunities Example: CITYWATER Partners: Cities of Helsinki (lead partner), Tallinn, Turku, and Tallinn University. Duration: 3 years Budget: 1.2 million euros. Co-financed by the European Commission Life+ programme (50%) and the Finnish Ministry of the Environment, and by partners Actions: Cost-benefit analysis, environmental communication, storm water management constructions, promoting the BSC

SUMMARY: TAKE ACTION FOR THE BALTIC SEA! The Baltic Sea needs our help Action at the local level is crucial The Baltic Sea Challenge supports concrete action at the local level
