ARQULUK Meeting Year 1 Update ( ) Whitehorse, May 17 th 2013 Attendance Guy Doré, Laval University - Civil engineering Chantal Lemieux, Laval University - Civil engineering PARTNERS: Stephen Mooney, Director Yukon Cold Climate Innovation Center Chris Hawkins, Vice President Research, Yukon Research Center Jean-Martin Croteau, Technical Director Colas Canada Todd Strynadka, Technical Services Manager, Terus Constructions Ltd., Surrey, BC (Colas Canada) Chris Simons, Division Manager, Skookum, Whitehorse, YT (Colas Canada) Masahiko Iwama, Nippo Corporation Bronwyn Benkert, Research Project Coordinator, Yukon Research Center LAVAL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: Simon Dumais, MSc candidate Loriane Perier, MSc candidate Benoît Loranger, MSc candidate Julie Malenfant-Lepage, PhD candidate 1) Presentation of people attending the meeting 2) Approval of the agenda 3) Summarize the minutes of the start-up meeting (Appendix), Québec August ) Program goal, objectives, themes, and time table Refer to document: Presentation_Year1Meeting_Whitehorse_17May2013_EN
5) Ongoing project update 2-c. In-situ oedometric tests : Guy shortly presented Cédric Flécheux s project Cédric is assembling the oedometric core barrel prototype. The drilling test will be performed in the lab during summer. If concluding, field tests will be performed late summer or fall. 2-a. Analysis of gravimetry and thermal profile: Benoît Loranger presentation Refer to document : Presentation_BenoitLoranger_130517_EN Discussion after the presentation : The gravimeter has to be move (without wheels) from place to place. At first on a long distance (5m), and then on a short distance (1m or less) if an anomaly is detected. The gravimeter will be used at Beaver Creek site, where the boreholes data is already available, and at Dry Creek site combined with new boreholes that will be performed by an Arquluk partner, Kryotek, to validate the anomalies found with the gravimeter. 2-b. Analysis of longitudinal profiles of existing pavements: Guy shortly presented Céline Carreau s project (short internship) IRI-International Roughness Index : triggers the moment to do repairs on the road, but includes several factors. Different wavelengths were used to isolate degradation caused by permafrost, and eventually detect it at an early stage of degradation. Laval University s team uses a walking profilometer traveling by foot at 2 km/h. Yukon Highways uses an inertial profilometer mounted on EBA truck traveling at 50 km/h. 3-b. Development of a protection method based on the use of a high albedo surfacing material: Simon Dumais presentation Refer to document : Presentation_SimonDumais_130517_EN Discussion after the presentation : Specifications for high albedo surface has been defined Surface temperature was estimated (projection) with the data from 30 cm deep (thermistors). Monthly average was presented but the data are only available every 4 hours. Albedo testing on samples sent by the partners shows the same results for Nippo samples of 30 cm x 30 cm, and 1 m x 1 m. Albedo testing is feasible in a laboratory, but it is better to do outside. Also feasible when cloudy but this may produce uncertain results between incoming radiation (pyronameter up) and reflected radiation (pyronameter down), depending on the thickness of the clouds. It is better to test when it is clear and sunny outside. Jean-Martin Croteau suggested a paper : Tran et al. Strategies for Design and Construction of High-Reflectance Asphalt Pavements. TRB Measurements will be done at Dawson, on Front Street.
Projects associated with Arquluk 1-a related project. Thermal regime around culvert, Transport Canada. Loriane Perier (MSc), presentation Refer to document : Presentation_LorianePerier_130517_EN Started in Fall c related project. Monitoring the thermal and mechanical behaviour of the access road to Salluit airport, Nunavik, Transport Québec. Dejan Grabundzija (MSc) Started in May a and 3-c related project. Monitoring the thermal and mechanical behavior of the embankment, Puvirnituq airstrip, Nunavik, Transport Québec. Félix Gravel-Gaumond (MSc) Ended in December a and 3-c related project. Development of a design procedure for a low-impact drainage design system, ADAPT. Julie Malenfant-Lepage (PhD), presentation Refer to document : Presentation_JulieLMalenfant_130517_EN Started in May 2013 Case study of the Dry Creek thermokarst development and of the Beaver Creek landslide. Floriane Morvan (internship) summer ) Program related presentation Geoscience mapping for climate change adaptation planning: examining permafrost along the Alaska Highway corridor. Bronwyn Benkert, Research Project Coordinator, Northern Climate ExChange, Yukon Research Center Refer to document : Presentation_BronwynBenkert_NCE_130517_EN 2 projects: - Landscape hazards in Yukon communities: Geoscience mapping for climate change adaptation planning. maps completed for Mayo, Pelly Crossing, Burwash Landing and Destruction Bay maps to come by March 2015: Dawson, Faro and Ross River - Vulnerability of the North Alaska Highway to climate change: Bumps in the road project. Produce a field guide for maintenance along the highway
between Destruction Bay and the border near Beaver Creek Summer 2013: drilling in Dry Creek and other sites Discussion after the presentation: Instrumentation on the highway passed Beaver Creek (between the customs), could be good to coordinate with Colas for when they repair the road = borehole in the center lane and instrumentation of the road. 7) Program management Project committee Contact them to ask in which projects they would like to be involved Website: Presentation material (from conference), project updates, part of the website reserved to the partners (see it before it is published on the website, and make comments and suggestions), presentations and minutes of the meeting (in partner section) Newsletter: electronic, lots of stuff right now, project update 8) Round table: Meeting in west (spring) and in east (fall), webinar would be better to use to see the presentations 9) Arquluk presentations at future conferences - International conference on permafrost, ICCRE 2014, Reno, USA - Canadian permafrost conference in the Canadian geotechnical GeoConference (every 5 years), October 2015 Jean-Martin Croteau suggested engineering conferences. His clients are: - Transport Association of Canada - TAC - Summer Winter Integrated Field Technologies SWIFT (airfield pavement) - Canadian Technical Asphalt Association (presentation related to asphalt) Partner will get to be co-author of the paper and review it before submitting
10) Varia Bronwyn and Stephen made us aware of the need to communicate with the communities. We can work with Bronwyn to use the connection with the Yukon College to explain our projects to the communities. Posters are a good way to explain simply the project (ex: poster of the test section in Beaver Creek tourist office). Signs along the road are also a good way to inform people, or a frequency (radio) with the Yukon Highways. 11) Next meeting Quebec (Fall 2013) Whitehorse (Spring2014), easier for travelling if not on Friday
