Campus Sustainable Development of Performance Indicators Measuring progress towards sustainability requires generating suitable performance indicators that take into account the full life cycle issues of products or activities.
Capacity Building Through Education and Communication that Promotes Change. Change towards Sustainability is best achieved through capacity building that is based on education with a complete commitment to curricular experiences that foster development of the student s skills in interdisciplinary teamwork and effective communication.
Performance Indicators Faculty Capacity Building Presently, Tec is offering 39 courses with SD as the golden thread. A first educate-the-educator s course was offered in July 2002 to 28 educators from architecture, international affairs, civil and chemical engineering.
Performance Indicators Faculty Capacity Building Educate-the-Educators courses will be offered throughout the autumn of 2002 and throughout 2003.
Performance Indicators Campus Physical Plant Operations Electrical energy per capita consumption for 2001: 6.24 GJ/student In the last four years there has been an average of 11% per capita energy consumption decrease.
Performance Indicators Campus Physical Plant Operations Natural Gas consumption, per capita consumption for 2001: 1.58 GJ/student During the last five years, there has been a decrease of 14 % per capita consumption.
Performance Indicators Campus Physical Plant Operations Water consumption per capita for 2001: 31 m 3 /student. In the last four years there has been a decrease of 16 % per capita consumption.
Performance Indicators Maintaining Life Support Systems, Structure and Function Understanding Life Support Systems, implies that protecting ecosystem health is critical to the planet s life. It is a basic and fundamental condition for Sustainability.
Performance Indicators Maintaining Life Support Systems, Structure and Function Tec s Arboretum Plant areas are designed to provide proper landscaping, as well as to provide learning opportunities about eco-system sustainability. Theme gardens are being designed to help maintain the local floral & faunal species diversity as well as to support teaching, research & community outreach.
Sustainable Campus Operation. Activities being done New Buildings. Generating Building Design criteria, as well as Material Procurement criteria that take into consideration Life-Cycle analysis.
Sustainable Campus Operation. Activities being done Old Buildings Selection of a target Building to achieve better energy performance, as well as air quality performance. Prepare an Energy and Air quality audit, besides measuring variables that set the improvement base.
What About the Future of Tec s SD Program? Much more must be done on Educating-the- Educators, on SD so that all faculty teach these concepts and related tools and values to all students by 2004; Much more must be done on Greening of the Campus, structures, procurement, material s management, utilisation of renewable energy, water and other natural resources; Much more must be done on research and implementation of SD throughout Latin American Societies.
What About the Future of Tec s SD Program? Much more must be done on developing Partnerships with other academic institutions, worldwide. We hope that participation in this conference will help to facilitate cooperation in new course development, international research and societal implementation of SD policies and practices.
