Courses must be taken for a letter grade. Summer courses or outside courses count, if accepted by Yale. Capstone projects must extend into senior year. 9
CHANGES UNDER REVIEW* Energy Studies Requirements Six courses plus a senior (capstone) project Course Distribution Requirements 1 course in each of the 3 tracks Of the 6 courses, no more than 2 in the student s major Double majors can use 5 courses total from their two majors. *For consistency with other MAPs: any changes, if implemented, would go into effect for the class of
This year, the enrollment period for Energy Studies (for sophomores only) will be in the Fall term in coordination with the other MAPs. There will be a gateway course in the Spring Term for all sophomores accepted into Energy Studies. The gateway course will be adapted from APHY 100/G&G 105/PHYS 100/ENAS 100/EVST 100 Energy Technology and Society and will have two components: Lecture/seminar and Sessions/clinic. 11
The sessions/clinic part of the gateway course will be part of a new initiative, to be run in collaboration with the Yale Office of Facilities and Yale Office of Sustainability. For the next phase of the Carbon Charge Task Force program, the Offices of Facilities and Sustainability have assembled a list of projects for making Yale more sustainable and for decarbonizing its energy supply. The goal of this part of the gateway course will be for students: (a) To select a project from the list, or define a new one; (b) To fully define the project, including if necessary, some initial experimentation, with support from Yale faculty, staff and TFs, (c) To put together a project team and budget. Projects would start in the fall term of 2017 (fall term of junior year for the new Energy Studies students) and, ideally, turn into capstone projects for the Energy Studies class of
SAMPLE PROJECT TOPICS Energy Systems (including monitoring and analysis of current systems and assessment of new technology) 1 Humidification: low energy ways to provide, need for in conservation or laboratory settings, design standards, are we using too much?, increased needs for and energy implications at Yale University 2 Personal comfort systems: adapting traditional personal comfort systems (Japanese kotatsu, Portuguese masa Camilla, Iranian sandali) to Western educational settings, further investigating current systems like Wristify and thermal control clothing research 3 Minus 80 Freezer performance and monitoring: we have freezer meters that could be used on campus to understand energy use of minus 80 freezer storage and begin to create freezer networks instead of freezer banks or individual freezers 4 Food Service energy assessments: survey and in-depth understanding of energy used for food storage and preparation. Low energy menus, could include on-campus metering 5 Stack affects in SML, PWG, and KBT 6 LCCA (life cycle cost analysis) of gas fire places in Residential Colleges 7 LCCA of Beinecke plaza snow melt system 8 Investigation and application of wireless FCU (fan coil unit) control in smaller Yale buildings 13
SAMPLE PROJECT TOPICS Energy Services 9 Applying innovative services and applications to Yale Campus: Uber pick-up model, AirBNB seminar and office rental for shared spaces, etc. 10 Developing and piloting a model for training students and staff in performing energy surveys and implementing opportunities 11 Developing and piloting various ways to present energy data / reports / bills to audience with low energy literacy and attention span Energy Behavior and Training 12 Developing and piloting various design for good behavior strategies in campus buildings Other possible longer-term research projects Investigation of carbon capture (& storage) options for Yale power plants Investigation of viable and meaningful long-term carbon offsets for Yale Monitoring and analysis of the Carbon Charge Project at Yale and similar programs at other institutions 14
Some deadlines to be aware of Seniors will be required to define their capstone projects by the end of October. Juniors will be required to provide a proposal for their capstone projects by the end of spring recess (March 27). Capstone project write-ups will be due at the end of spring-term reading period (May 5). 15
We will work with seniors this term to define an appropriate exit course for Energy Studies, centered partly around the senior capstone projects, but also including special topics in tracks 2 and 3 of interest to seniors in Energy Studies G&G 745/6 Seminar in Climate & Energy 16
Sample Capstones Kate McMillan Juan Pablo Ponce de Leon Robert Loweth Edward Wang Y-House: Yale Solar Decathlon 17
