4 Birth of the project Pressure on the industry from various sides: Consumers (Ecolabels, etc.) Retailers (B&Q and Brico working on their green image) Legislators (France and Germany request EPDs etc.) Green building schemes (BREEAM, HQE etc.) In 2010, CEPE s Sustainability Taskforce: Determined the industry s stance on sustainability Established the Sustainability Working Party to develop a common database of datasets for raw materials and paint production 4

5 CEPE sustainability charter Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) is a widely recognised methodology, seeking to improve products by assessing their manufacturing, use and end of life, from the viewpoint of people, planet and prosperity Quote from CEPE s Sustainability charter: CEPE members will be encouraged in future to also identify and analyse the broader environmental effects of their products (carbon footprint, water usage etc.) over the product s Life Cycle (from cradle to grave). 5

8 Goals CEPE LCI Project To get the coatings industry started with understanding and managing its products environmental footprints throughout the life cycle: Collect industry data on the paint production processes to define standard industry LCI data Jointly build an LCI database for the most common raw materials used in the industry, and make it the recommended database for paints Help CEPE members understand and answer Life Cycle / EPD / footprint questions 8

11 Database Use by Members Evaluate value chains Compare different coating systems and see what product (group) has a high or low footprint during each step of the process Answer with confidence As the database is reviewed and is the common basis for environmental footprints in the whole industry you can use the data with confidence to calculate footprint data Use the Database in your own LCA tools The database fills in most of the paints and printing inks raw materials data gaps that existed. It also contains the first industry representative LCI of paint manufacturing processes 11

15 Next steps Deliverables LCI project: Platform for LCA within coatings industry created Possible sectorial projects on the gate to grave part of the life cycle Planned updates: Q4 2013: update raw material database Yearly review databases to assess if a revision is required: Changes in legislation influencing product formulation (REACH 2018?) Inclusion important datasets brought to CEPE prior to revision Inclusion of specific suppliers data under transparent conditions Active revision every 3 years search for more recent data 15
