12 Materials for Extreme Conditions Industry partners: Magnum-PSI Knowledge partners: Background: In high energy-density applications, materials are required to cope with extreme fluxes of heat and particles. Program of 7 PhD students aims at developing materials suited for such conditions. 3 industrial (ASML, NRG and RI) and 3 academic (TU/e, TUD, DIFFER) partners. DIFFER's Magnum-PSI can produce similar plasma conditions as materials will experience in fusion rectors. Goal: To enable the application of the next generation materials for various high energy-density applications Lithography, Nuclear Fusion, Fission Total project budget: Funded by TKI grant: Duration: 48 months (7 PhD) Utilisation: The results will be used by ASML, NRG and Research Instruments
13 Area of interest: Sustainable Energy Materials Examples of running projects: Lead-free perovskite solar cells for steel substrates (TUD & TU/ e Tata Steel) Meso-structured Al-Si layers for optical anti-reflective coatings (TU/ e DSM) In-situ characterization of spatial atmospheric PE-ALD layers (TU/ e TNO Solliance) Solid electrolytes for safe high performance Li-ion batteries (TUD TNO Holst ) Previous projects: Polymer solar cells on steels (TU/ e): efficient cells in conventional and inverted geometries have been successfully fabricated Polymer solar cells (TUD) aiming for cheaper chemistry had low efficiency so far. 13
