3 Background Key challenges in development of unconventional resources include enhancing hydraulic fracturing efficiency, reducing costs, exemplifying safe operations, and minimizing adverse environmental impacts. Achieving next-level advancement in these areas will require effective resource recovery from each hydraulic fracturing stage while minimizing the material and energy input requirements. The Hydraulic Fracturing Test Site (HFTS) program being developed by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) will provide clearer understanding of the fracturing dynamics that are key to controlling fracture dimensions and vital to the productivity of fracture networks created in long horizontal wells. The mission of the HFTS program is to improve shale resource recovery through the evaluation and development of new methods and technologies for increasing the efficiency of the hydraulic fracturing process that leads to fewer wells drilled while enabling higher production output per well, higher cost efficiency, superior reliability and safeguards, and minimized environmental impact. As part of the Phase I Planning effort for HFTS and as described in the HFTS Program Strategy Report to RPSEA, GTI invited a consortium of producing and service companies involved in hydraulic fracturing of shale resources to participate in a series of planning workshops. Three workshops were hosted and mediated by GTI in the first half of 2013 one in Houston, one in Pittsburgh, and a webinar to align on HFTS program scope, discuss desired experiments and site selection considerations, refine the goals and objectives, and identify hydraulic fracturing research priorities. Twenty-two participants attended each of the first two workshops, comprised of research professionals and industry representatives from major and independent oil and gas companies and service companies. Involvement in the online webinar workshop grew to over 70 participants. An important point of discussion in the industry workshops was the necessity of HFTS to be cost efficient by avoiding redundant experiments and unnecessary data collection. This can be accomplished by leveraging existing data to establish baseline parameters, to inform the design of experiments for HFTS, and to identify information gaps and where complimentary data sets are valuable. Participants acknowledged the existence of considerable amounts of data from prior hydraulic fracturing research and testing done by research institutes, universities, and industry. However, a comprehensive collection and assessment of that existing hydraulic fracturing R&D and data availability does not exist. Such an assessment would investigate what hydraulic fracturing research has been done, where and by whom, what was accomplished, what data sets are available, and what data are relevant to HFTS. It was the consensus of the workshop participants that such an assessment helps to inform the research plan, the design of experiments, site considerations for HFTS, and keep costs to a minimum. It was also determined such an assessment is a valuable reference for industry independent of the HFTS program. Therefore, participants recommended a Phase II R&D Assessment and Data Review project be conducted by GTI. Scope of Work In Phase II, GTI will conduct a comprehensive search to identify prior studies, research, and data sets relevant to advancement of hydraulic fracturing science. This step will identify existing technologies and diagnostic projects and methods in order to identify valuable information and reduce the possibility of unnecessary duplication of prior work. Gaps in technology and methods that align with participants needs will become the focus of the experiments considered for the HFTS Phase III. Task 1 Identify Existing Literature and Data Sets Steps that will be conducted under this task to develop the Deliverables include: 2

May 15, Name: Paul Branagan Title: Principal Phone Number: Fax Number: Address: p_branagan@yahoo.com Summary of Experience: 7 Branagan & Associates 2948 Vista del Sol Ave. Las Vegas, NV Mr. Paul Branagan is a physicist with over 30 years of experience in commercial and R&D technical projects primarily directed at the assessment and commercial development of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. Principle sponsorship for many of these R&D projects was provided by the US Department of Energy (DOE), Gas Research Institute (GRI), the People s Republic of China and others. The emphasis of his responsibilities included leading technical teams in the integration of geologic data, core laboratory findings, stimulation effectiveness and reservoir testing from which to evaluate and model unconventional reservoirs. All this in support of developing the commercial design and implementation of enhanced production and field development strategies employing hydraulic fracturing, real time fracture monitoring techniques, effective use of long horizontal wells, and improved well patterning. Education: University Degree Area of Specialization Year University of Nevada-Las Vegas B.S. Physics Positions: Reservoir Engineering Consultant, Branagan and Associates Inc., June 1993 Present (20 years 6 months) Mr. Branagan has provided expert technical support to various major and independent production companies including AMOCO, Mobil, CONOCO, UPRC, PEMEX, Peoples Republic of China, Williams, Barrett Resources, and others as well as research organizations including DOE, LANL, and GRI. All were intensely involved in the economic development of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. One major project involved assisting GRI and GRI contractors in the development, field testing and analysis of various hydraulic fracturing strategies, real time micro seismic and downhole tiltmeter monitoring systems. On behalf of Barrett resources and Williams E&P he provided reservoir modeling and expert engineering testimony before the Colorado Oil & Gas Commission that lead to reducing the effective well spacing to 10 acres in the Piceance basin. He also consults with diverse technical teams in the development of commercial horizontal well and field scale reservoir models involving naturally fractured unconventional reservoirs. The models permit the incorporation of multiple non-symmetric hydraulic fracture stages with varying lengths and azimuths employing robust analytic and non-linear numerical techniques. The models readily permit the mapping and overlay of
9 microseismic and other fracture diagnostic data to augment simulating real field production data. Technical Program Manager, CER Corporation, (18 years) Mr. Branagan directed multi-disciplinary teams in R&D and field evaluation projects funded by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), DOE and the GRI that were designed to develop new methods and techniques to evaluate and enhance production in previously thought to be uneconomic complex reservoirs. He led a team that developed naturally fractured reservoir models for ultra-tight reservoirs that he field tested at the Multi-Well experiment (MWX) in Colorado. Mr. Branagan developed in conjunction with Sandia National Labs (SNL) high pressure stress testing equipment, field techniques and analysis designed to provide hydraulic fracture models with direct measurements of in-situ stresses. He evaluated and assessed the effects of production enhancement in lenticular tight gas sands following nuclear explosive stimulations performed by CER in Western Colorado. He designed an excavation program to determine the feasibility of emplacing a long man made channel from the Mediterranean Sea to the Qattara Depression in Egypt employing a long linear array of nuclear explosives. Sr. Scientist, EG&G Technical Services, (13 years) Mr. Branagan was assigned as a senior researcher in developing and field testing advanced diagnostic techniques and data acquisition systems to acquire specific data to evaluate the efficacy of various nuclear explosives and weapons systems as well as their adverse effects on advanced hardened delivery systems.
