Why support the use of PLC technology in application contexts where dedicated devices would generally be used? There are substantial direct advantages in using PLCs that result in sustainable profit for the user: these devices have been engineered to be manufactured for many years, guaranteeing that spare parts and a repair service will be available for decades to come. The devices are extensively programmable and their modular hardware and software enables us to develop solutions that meet the current and future needs of users and to constantly modify the existing plant and adapt it to new requirements; adopting interpreted as opposed to compiled programming codes also allows a high level of portability of applications developed on different CPUs and of successive generations; all of which protects your existing investments. Web Technology + IT: the same instruments used every day Saia Burgess Controls has been developing and commercialising web and IT functionality over all the Saia PCD platforms for very simple but fundamental reasons: Users who have to interact with the system can learn how to manage it quickly, easily and safely, and are already familiar with the tools with which to do so: open a communications channel from a web browser on a PC, tablet or smartphone, browse a website and read and process the data on an Excel sheet. The operations require no specific professional expertise, and are part the normal capabilities and daily routine familiar to most individuals. Investors need not budget for costs of hardware and services to equip control panels with dedicated devices or communication drivers to implement the new system, neither in the first commissioning phase nor during the subsequent operation of the plant, or to update it or adapt it to new standards and modifications stipulated by external bodies. The reliance on IT technology also means being able to use a range of communication carriers with multi-protocol technology via copper wire, fibre optics, wireless, that are stable, reliable, widely available with reduced infrastructure costs: valuable features in remote control applications and networks across the country. The attitude to remote communication The first SBC PLC emerged in the late 70s, just prior to the age of the Commodore VIC20 and 64 and the Sinclair ZX80 and Spectrum, and was already equipped with an integrated fully programmable serial port! Since then, the distinctive features of SBC controllers have been the broadening of applications and the performance of communication tools. Today, this has resulted in the option to have up to 15 communications interfaces on the same PCD, each with its own independent control protocol. Operators in the water sector can rely on the availability of the most commonly used industrial standard protocols, such as Modbus, IEC870, Profibus and the full integration of the standard IT communications protocols and services (Ethernet TCP/IP, HTTP, DHCP, DNS, FTP, SMTP, SNTP, SNMP, PPP). In particular, the availability of multiple serial interfaces that can be configured autonomously enables users to achieve a high level of security in data transport using various back-up communication channels between them /e.g.: Ethernet+GSM, RF+GSM, PSTN+RF, GSM+RF+Ethernet, etc.). It also means that maintenance can be carried out without expert intervention. Pay close attention to part «-2»; many suppliers only work to PLC standards, but this standard only defines the programming mode regardless of the quality of the hardware and design. Moreover, standard does not specify the portability of the application software from one series of devices to another, or from one hardware version to later versions.

It should be possible to adapt and expand the technology within this service life at any time. The controller should therefore be modular and manufactured in accordance with PLC quality. Our Saia PCD technology Your installation Compatibility and the easy portability of the application software in the plant or the RTU must be ensured from the generational life of products ranging from 18 to 25 years. The objective can only be achieved because we develop the programming tool totally independently and compliant with the «interpreted programming code». This technology requires some hardware resources, but allows the portability of user software on different generations of controllers. In addition to the strict IEC hardware standards for the PLC, the Saia PCD control technology also meets the most stringent requirements of various marine engineering test labs. Too often, application environments do not meet the relevant standards, so we made the control technology in the PCD 1, 2, 3 devices much more robust than stipulated by the «CE» standard, to withstand any interference.
