Foreword This impact report provides an insight into the range and complexity of our work, and crucially the difference it makes to marginalised communities in Malaysia. At Incitement, we are committed to measuring our impact. This means listening to the beneficiaries and the communities that are in need of help, learning about what works and what doesn t, and using those lessons to maximise the effectiveness of our projects. The statistics in this report give an overview of what has been achieved so far in priority areas of the project, areas in desperate need of help in East Malaysia, but also, surprisingly, in Peninsula Malaysia, at only 2 hours away from its capital. However, while Incitement is proud of the work that is continuously ongoing, the challenges that still remain of the situation are greatly recognised and will not go unnoticed. It will take serious determination to move ahead and address both causes and consequences of energy poverty to keep the communities safe from harm, and to give every individual of the communities the best start in life. Starting with one bottle at a time. And YOU. As we look forward to 2016 and beyond, our dedicated partners and team members can be optimistic about the progress made over the past 12 months. With the sustenance of committed partners, volunteers, engineers, and your support, Incitement stands ready to help even more marginalised communities even more effectively in the future. 3
About Incitement At Incitement we believe in growing, contributing, and having fun while you re at it. Ever since Incitement was founded on , the mission to activate and mobilise local communities by spreading positivity and creating tangible social impact is the fundamental aspiration, one of it being the Liter of Light project. Our work Liter of Light Do you know the percentage of the Malaysian population living without any access to electricity? It s 1%. This might not sound like a lot at first, but consider that Malaysia is a country of over 28 million people. That s over 280,000 Malaysians still living in the dark once the sun sets. While many of us have access to electricity supply 24/7, some are not as fortunate as the urbanites. In a rapidly developing Malaysia, the question still lingers on; why are there still communities living without one of the basic necessities? And most importantly, what can we do about it? What can you do about it? 4
This is where YOU and Liter of Light step in. Liter of Light is a global open source movement that aims to provide ecologically sustainable and cost-effective lighting to underprivileged and marginalised communities. The initiative was founded by Illac Diaz in 2011 in the Philippines, which has since spread over to 21 countries, and was brought to Malaysia by Incitement in
What else makes Liter of Light unique? Not only do you and the volunteers help install the bottled lights for the villages, but the project also educates the villagers on the materials used to build one, the mechanics behind the solar-powered lights and most importantly how to maintain the lights for a longer lifespan. 6
Our priorities Did you know that less than 2% of humanitarian funds go directly to local NGO s? Source: The Guardian At Incitement we ensure that at minimum 60% of received humanitarian funds go directly to its beneficiaries. The project is focusing especially on those whose needs are not recognised or met by other organisations, and whose lives can be transformed directly, indirectly, and permanently. 7
The following areas have been identified as high-impact areas: Educating the builders and users on solar-powered lights: Our aim is not just to build, install, and leave. As the saying goes Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime, and that is exactly what Incitement embodies in every project; a sustainable and lasting solution. Building sustainable solar-powered lights: Our aim is to build an average of 55 solar-powered light in every village, depending on the size of the village. We believe in renewable energy sources and going green for sustainability. By teaching the villagers about the most vital parts of the lights, they can do the maintenance themselves if necessary. This way the lights can last for a lifetime. 8

Our impact We make a positive impact on the lives of the marginalised communities through both our direct tangible action of building, and installing solarpowered lights while also educating young individuals, families and villages on the use of renewable energy source. To make a real difference to what is done, it s crucial to use the knowledge strategically to explore the best ways to support families and the villagers. Before the solar-powered lights were introduced to the villages, they relied heavily on indoor bon-fires and dangerous hand-made devices that are used to light up their homes at night. For women and children especially, leaving the house was not safe due to low visibility on what lies in front of them, and the possibility of encountering dangerous items or animals even if it was to go to the shared toilets. But with one source at a time, it is understood that light is the next important step to fix other problems that still remains. 13
What we ve done in 2015/16 This report has demonstrated the impact to underprivileged community of Malaysia throughout the year, during which there have been some standout results. A total of 20 villages are impacted by Liter of Light Malaysia in just a span of over one year from June 2015 until August 2016 Impacting 562 families with solar-powered lights 2,927 villagers no longer live in darkness 707 volunteers have joined the project to help build and install lights for the marginalised communities 908 solar-powered lights were installed POWERED BY: 14
A breakdown of the immediate results from the project for the first five villages we visited this year: Kampung Pengeng Date of the build: January 31, 2016 The village has a population of 400 villagers 40 volunteers participated in the project 57 families received 64 solar-powered lights installed 15
Kampung Renglas Date of the build: February 28, 2016 The village has a population of 150 villagers 40 volunteers participated in the project 34 families received 51 solar-powered lights installed 16
Kampung Abu Date of the build: March 6, 2016 The village has a population of 102 villagers 31 volunteers participated in the project 29 families received 47 solar-powered lights installed 17
Kampung Tenangka Date of the build: March 13, 2016 The village has a population of 72 villagers 38 volunteers participated in the project 15 families received 27 solar-powered lights installed 18
Kampung Sungai Loon Date of the build: March 27, 2016 The village has a population of 117 villagers 47 volunteers participated in the project 27 families received 44 solar-powered lights installed 19
Social impact Reduce Risk Of Fire Hazards With the solar-powered lights, the villagers do not have to rely on bon-fires, candles and oil-lamps as their source of light at night, and this helps reduce the risks of hazardous fire that may cause damages and injuries. Improve Community Safety Street lights lessens the villagers worry of encountering wild animals when they have to go out at night. i.e: going to the Surau for prayers (especially during Ramadhan). Encourage and Improve Education Once the lights turned on, the children of the villages immediately took their books out and started reading under the lights the lights allow the children to study and do homework at night which encourages the children towards education. Villagers also learned how to maintain and build the lights as well. Best of all, the device is 100% built by students. They are now learning and growing to be more innovative and proactive in building things that matter for the community. Increase Social Bonding Among Villagers Additional social value is also created, since villagers can now have recreational and social activities at night among themselves, and with neighbouring villages. 20
Looking ahead to 2017 This report reflects heavily on the valued contributions of time, talents and financial support that make Liter of Light possible. It has definitely been quite the journey to each village we have visited and welcomed by, the number of hours riding in buses and four wheel drives, countless hours of hiking through the forest with lights carried out behind our backs, the amount of manpower we ve accumulated throughout the project building nearly a thousand lights, it has all been worth the sweats and hardship. Building on our achievements this year, we have an ambitious plan for the years ahead. It has been a great start of creating an impact on the underprivileged and marginalised communities and we are always striving for a bigger impact. Our primary objectives, set out for the coming years has remained unchanged from previous years: To end energy poverty by 2020 To help as many underprivileged and marginalised communities as possible by providing them with sustainable and cost-effective lighting To educate the communities on solar energy To empower the communities to be active, engaged and resilient. Our inaugural impact report has provided evidence to demonstrate the actions taken and initiatives that work, as well as indicative measurements of the social value provided by our sponsors. Over the coming year, we will continue to analyse and evaluate our social projects in partnership with our sponsors, from big corporations to local universities and think-tanks. This will contribute to subsequent impact reports, with records and evidence that is based on the work we do to tackle the challenges faced by the communities that are in need while also keeping track of their growth and well-being. 21
