Model Validation on Wind Turbine Generators Using the 2 nd Generation Wind Turbine Generator Models Pouyan Pourbeik ppourbeik@epri.com WECC REMTF Workshop Salt Lake City, UT 6/17/14
OVERVIEW Standards/Policies: 2012 WECC Generator Test Policy NERC MOD-27 and MOD-26 Standards Guides for Modeling: WECC Wind Power Plant Power Flow Modeling Guide WECC Wind Power Plant Dynamic Modeling Guide 2
BACKGROUND We started first with validation of single Wind Turbine Generators (WTG) EPRI release the simple public tool WTGMV [1] for validating single WTG 2 nd generation models using measured disturbance data Measured: Vt Model P, Q (sim) Compare and PQ P, optimize 3
FIELD MEASURED DATA Single WTG 4
VALIDATION SINGEL WTG Type 3 [2] Vendor 2 Vendor 2b Vendor 3 5
VALIDATION SINGEL WTG Type 4 [3] Vendor 1 Vendor 2 Vendor 3 Vendor 4 6
PLANT LEVEL VALIDATION THE NEXT STEP A wind power plant (per the WECC guide): 7
POSSIBLE SCENARIOS 8
SIMPLE CASE Quite reasonable for power system stability studies looking at impact of WPP on grid [4], [5] & [6] Single equivalent feeder model is proven NREL technique [7] EPRI s simple tool (REMV 1 ) will allow for validation of this case 1. REMV is the second version of WTGMV to be released by EPRI in 2014; will include plant level validation and PV model validation 9
MORE COMPLEX CASES NEED MORE R&D 10
PLANT LEVEL VALIDATION EXAMPLE 11
PLANT LEVEL MODEL VALIDATION No detailed data on the WPP controls or WTG controls; just that they are type 4 A Data from WECC planning case powerflow model 12
PLANT LEVEL MODEL VALIDATION PMU data provided by BPA Measured: P, Q, V, f at 30 samples per second 13
MEASUREMENT ISSUE Apparent measurement error in the PMU data P, Q, V 230 kv 34.5 kv P, Q, V R + jxt 14
EXTRAPOLATE BACK TO WTG TERMINALS PMU data provided by BPA Measured: P, Q, V, f at 30 samples per second or 15
PRELIMINARY RESULTS [8] Event 1 Event 2 16
NEXT STEP Try it in GE PSLF with 2 nd Generation WTG Models Using the EPRI REMV tool (in development and will be released in 2014) we get the model parameters 17
RUNNING IN GE PSLF Now take the data into GE PSLF and using play back see if model fits 18
COMPARE TERMINAL VOLTAGE 19
SUMMARY Can get a reasonable fit with EPRI tool, however, MW variations are neglected assuming constant wind speed Have tried all the events for one of the WPP there seems to be some variation in control strategy; this needs to be further investigated with the plant owner Using the 2 nd generation WTG models in GE PSLF gives just as good a result and matches the EPRI tool Powerflow solution in GE PSLF does not match perfectly; PMU measurement issue 20
On-Going Work Try other cases (e.g. type 3 WTG) Complete work on EPRI REMV tool and release it Try validation tool technique on PV models have received PV data from one vendor with which we have signed an NDA 21
DEMO EXAMPLE Show example of running REMV etc. 22
