1 Using PMU data for model validation of wind power plants Pouyan Pourbeik, EPRI or 7/30/14 IEEE PES GM, July 2014
MODEL VALIDATION REQUIREMENTS IN THE USA 2 Standards/Policies: 2012 WECC Generator Test Policy NERC MOD 27 and MOD 26 Standards Guides for Modeling: WECC Wind Power Plant Power Flow Modeling Guide WECC Wind Power Plant Dynamic Modeling Guide
BACKGROUND In previous years started with validation of single Wind Turbine Generators (WTG) EPRI release the simple public tool WTGMV [1] for validating single generic WTG generator models using measured disturbance data Measured: Vt P, Q Model P, Q (sim) Compare and optimize
VALIDATION SINGEL WTG Type 3 [2] Vendor 2 Vendor 2b Vendor 3
VALIDATION SINGEL WTG Type 4 [3] Vendor 1 Vendor 2 Vendor 3 Vendor 4
PLANT LEVEL VALIDATION THE NEXT STEP A wind power plant (per the WECC guide):
POSSIBLE SCENARIOS
SIMPLE CASE Reasonable for power system stability studies [4], ],[5] & [6] Single equivalent feeder proven NREL technique [7] Goal of EPRI s simple tool (REMV 1 ) is to allow for validation of this case 1. REMV is the second version of WTGMV to be released by EPRI in 2014; will include plant level validation and PV model validation
PLANT LEVEL MODEL VALIDATION No detailed data on the WPP controls or WTG controls; just that they are type 4 A Data graciously provided by BPA Data from WECC planning case powerflow model
PLANT LEVEL MODEL VALIDATION PMU data provided by BPA Measured: P, Q, V, f at 60 samples per second
MEASUREMENT ISSUE Apparent measurement error in the PMU data P, Q, V 230 kv 34.5 kv P, Q, V R + jxt
PRELIMINARY RESULTS [8] Event 1 Event 2
RUNNING IN GE PSLF Now take the data into GE PSLF and using play back see if model fits
COMPARE TERMINAL VOLTAGE
SUMMARY Can get a reasonable fit with this approach, however, MW variations are neglected assuming constant wind speed Have tried all the events for one of the WPP there seems to be some variation in control strategy; this needs to be further investigated with the plant owner Using the 2 nd generation WTG models in GE PSLF TM gives just as good a result and matches the EPRI tool Powerflow solution in GE PSLF does not match perfectly; PMU measurement issue
