Intervening factors in the consumption of water in residential buildings in the city of Joinville Talita Flores Dias Andreza Kalbusch Elisa Henning Santa Catarina State University

Introduction Why is it important to study water consumption in buildings? balance between the demand and the availability of resources; the prediction of water consumption in buildings is indispensable in the management of water use in cities.

Introduction studies on the subject have been conducted around the world (some of them have been published on Journal of Cleaner Production in recent years). study that reflects the reality of water consumption in Brazil?

Objective Identify the factors that may influence water consumption in residential buildings in the city of Joinville (Southern Brazil), through the analysis of socioeconomic and constructive variables.

Data were collected from 47 buildings located in the city of Joinville, Southern Brazil; These buildings contain 1422 housing units; 4346 inhabitants. Material and Methods

Material and Methods In the sample there are low-income buildings and high-standard buildings

Socioeconomic aspects were investigated, as well as the constructive characteristics of the buildings: Distance from the building to the city downtown; Neighborhood income; Percentage of men; Material and Methods Age of the district's population (60 and over); Educational level of the residents;

Percentage of renters; Presence of public sewage system; Number of apartments; Average area of the apartments; Number of blocks; Number of floors; Age of the building; Number of rooms;

Number of bathrooms; Presence of rooms for employees; Bathtubs in the apartments; Elevator; Average number of residents per apartment; Type of water consumption measurement system (Individual or Collective); Time elapsed since the last renovation in the plumbing system;

Pool(s); Playground; Alternative water supply system (well, water reuse or rainwater harvesting system).

Material and Methods Two models were elaborated with the following dependent variables: Per capita water consumption (liters/person/day); Total building water consumption (m³/day).

Material and Methods the multiple linear regression method was used. due to the fact that the model has more than one regressor (independent variable) and the (dependent) response variable is quantitative. y = β 0 + β 1 x 1 + β 2 x β k x k + Ɛ

Results Water consumption (n=47 buildings): Variable Min 1 st Quartile Median Mean 3 rd Quartile Max Standard Deviation Building water consumption (m³/day) Per capita water consumption (L/person/day)

Results Building water consumption (m 3 /day): The results indicate significant coefficients for variables related to the information regarding the socioeconomic and constructive aspects of the building, as follows:

Estimate Std error t p-value Intercept *** Porcentage of men *** Number of apartments ** Average apartment area Number of blocks e-05 *** Number of floors *** Age of the building *** Number os rooms * Number of bathrooms e-06 *** Rooms for employees Inhabitants per apartment Time since renovation in the building * Pool * Alternative water supply system *** Significance level 0 *** ** 0.01 * F = p-valor = 2.2e-16 R² = adjusted R² = 96.82%.

The model residuals are independent and normally distributed. Normallity test Shapiro-Wilk (p-value = ) Histogram residuals building water consumption

Model for Building water consumption (m 3 /day): WW = 113,05 + 2,06(%mmm) + 0,25(n aaaa ) + 0,03(aaaa aaaa ) + 2,39(n bbbbb ) + 0,74(n ffffff ) + 0,36(aaa bbbb ) 0,11(n rrr ) + 0,21(n bbbbb ) 4,44(rrr eee ) + 0,77 iiiii aaaa + 2,15(tt rrrr ) 4,74(pppp) 5,12(WW aaaaaaa )

Per capita water consumption (L/person/day) The analysis presented significant coefficients for the following variables:

Estimate Std error t p-value Intercept Distance downtown ** Educational level % renters Sewage system Number of blocks * Number of floors Age of the building e-08 *** Number of rooms Number of bathrooms ** Rooms for employees Bathtub * Inhabitants per apartment ** Aternative water supply *** system Level of significance 0 *** ** 0.01 * F = p-value = 2.694e-11 R² = Adjusted R² = 82.65%.

Model residuals exhibit a normal distribution, supported by the Shapiro-Wilk test (p-value ). Histogram residuals per capita water consumption

Model for Per capita water consumption (L/person/day): PPPP = 2, ,51(dddd ddddd ) + 14,17(eeee lll ) 21,45(% rrrrrrr ) + 30,06(sss ssss ) 8,67(n bbbbb ) + 2,34(n ffffff ) + 4,97(aaa bbbb ) 0,23(n rrr ) + 0,88(n bbbbb ) + 33,09(rrr eee ) 41,08(bbbbbb) 12,20 iiiii aaaa 41,24(WW aaaaaaa )

Conclusions In the face of water scarcity problem that has been perceived, there is a need to identify which factors influence the consumption of water in residential buildings. Also, how these factors affect consumption. Only through the knowledge of these factors and characteristics, strategies for saving water in the built environment can be developed.

The work continues... Model was developed with data from 89 buildings, 3171 housing units and 9112 inhabitants. The results are promising and will be tested in a building outside the sample. THANK YOU! Andreza Kalbusch, Dr. Eng. andreza.kalbusch@udesc.br
