Energy potential definition International definition of energy potential Theoretical Technical Economic : three layer pyramid structure 3 category : IRENA, ERENE 4 category : IEA, NREL, Bonn Univ., Norway Bellona Foundation 5 category : REN21, DLR Korean definition of energy potential- 4 categories Theoretical potential : Total natural energy in the region Geographical potential : Energy potential disregarding restricted areas Technical potential : Extracted energy using present technology Market potential : Economical energy potential with energy demand, standard market price, compensation rate, etc. 15

Dividing regions Dividing regions Division is based on tidal current chart in nautical publications. The coastal line was divided into 6 regions. Region 3 and 5 were further subdivided. Region 1 No. Velocity (cm/s) Power density (W/m 2 ) API (MW/km 2 )

Procedure of resource assessment Procedure of resource assessment Literature study and existing survey data collection along the coastline Determination of the survey areas. Ocean survey : echo sound, side scan sonar, multi-beam sonar, bottom profiler, ADCP, wave, etc. Modelling of areas of interest based on ocean survey data Investigation of restricted areas; ship channel, military zone, shallow regions, archeological areas, preserved areas, fishing zone, etc. Estimation of theoretical energy potential Geographical energy potential considering restricted areas Determination of TCP device type, efficiency, energy loss, power rate, etc. Technical energy potential calculation Conducting the financial feasibility study Market energy potential 17

Theoretical potential assessment Definition of theoretical potential in tidal current power Total natural tidal current energy in the region without any restriction. Assumptions for calculation of theoretical potential The boundary of the study is limited within EEZ. API method is used in the potential estimation. The average flow velocity in mid depth is assumed as 95% of surface average velocity. 18

Theoretical potential assessment Estimation method for theoretical potential API (Averaged Power Intercepted) : theoretically extractable energy potential per unit area API = PD A swept A occupied (PD 1 2 ρu3, A swept Area of tidal turbine, A occupied Occupied area per a device) Theoretical potential assessment is based on the Averaged API calculated from velocity distribution and the area. Evaluation method for theoretical potential Tidal current energy is evaluated as IGC[GW], AEP[TWh/y] and TOE[1000toe/y]. Installed generating capacity (IGC) : Maximum output of generators in a farm IGC = API A 103 (API averaged API, A areaof the region) Annual Energy Production (AEP): annually generated energy from IGC AEP = IGC k u 10 5 k u 이용률, 100% Tonne of Oil Equivalent (TOE) : the amount of energy released by burning one ton of crude oil TOE = AEP 106 f (f Energy conversion factor) 19

Geographical restriction Geographically restricted areas in Korea Preserved coastal area Military zone Ship channel Artificial reef zone and fishing zone Minimum water depth limitation Subsea cable and pipeline routes Archeologically designated area 20

Geographical restriction Preserved coastal area The area being outstanding natural scenery Habitat for wild animals and plants, or arrival place for migratory birds The area that its ecosystem needs to be preserved, such as estuaries, low and swampy places, etc. Clean sea area which contains plentiful maritime resources The area designated as preservation area by the related laws or plans, such as Natural Environment Preservation Area, Cultural Property Protection Area, and Natural Ecosystem Preservation Area, etc. Other Areas that local government acknowledges the need of absolute preservation. 21

Geographical restriction Military zone Restricted zone : shooting ranges and training grounds, areas within one kilometer radius from the outermost boundary line of the relevant military base or drill zone. Ship channel Exclusion of ship channel Assuming ship channel of 300m wide Artificial reef zone and fishing zone Artificial reef area Fishing zones Should have more than 1km buffer zone. Minimum water depth limitation Minimum installation water depth of 5m Subsea cable and pipeline Buffer zone of 1km 22

Geographical potential assessment Definition of Geographical potential in tidal current power Energy potential disregarding the restricted area Evaluation method for geographical potential Installed generating capacity (IGC) IGC = API A g 10 3 (A g Area excluding the geographically restricted areas) Annual Energy Production (AEP) AEP = IGC k u 10 5 k u Utilizable factor, 100% 23

Technical potential assessment Definition of technical potential Extracted energy by present technology considering turbine efficiency, generating efficiency, operation rate, start up velocity, etc. Assumptions for calculation of technical potential Minimum start up velocity of 0.7m/s Operation rate of 30% System efficiency of 35% Evaluation method for technical potential Installed generating capacity (IGC) IGC = API A t 10 3 η A t Area excluding the minimum start up velocity η Tidal current system efficiency, 35% Annual Energy Production (AEP) AEP = IGC k u 10 5 k u Operation rate, 35% 24

Tidal energy potential in Korea Potential Area [km 2 ] IGC [GW] AEP [TWh/y] TOE [1000toe/y] Theoretical 82,478 1, ,156 1,131,253 Geographical 36, , ,178 Technical 17, ,611 Installed generating capacity (IGC) : Maximum output of generators in the area Annual Energy Production (AEP): annually generated energy from IGC Tonne of Oil Equivalent (TOE) : the amount of energy released by burning one ton of crude oil 25
