UCSB Sustainability Built Environment Achievements: LEED EB-Girvetz Hall and Rec Cen Pending certification for SRB for LEED NC Silver Green cleaning products
UCSB Sustainability Built Environment Goal: USGBC Pilot Portfolio Program-Continue to certify (a minimum of five buildings this year) under USGBC LEED EB (goal of 25 buildings in five years) Continue to certify structures completing new construction under LEED NC (silver level or higher)

UCSB Sustainability Communications Goals: Craft Sustainability Communications Plan Partner with Nexus for regular sustainability coverage Branding efforts Get UCSB sustainability into national publications as well as UCSB specific publications Obtain and post regular information from change agent teams Keep the web site current
UCSB Sustainability Energy Achievements: Saved $6.7M in electrical usage through energy conservation programs Reduced CO2 emissions by 7000 metric tons per year UCSB uses less energy per sq. ft than any other UC campus Phelps/Ellison energy competition Housing energy competition
UCSB Sustainability Energy Goals: Goal 1: By 2010, reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 2000 levels Goal 2: Create strategies to source energy from % from renewable Goal 3: Implement measurement and verification enhancements Action: (Initial work began in Fall 2006 and was completed in December 2006) Continue to review indicator data and assess gaps in data collection. Submit recommendations to Sr. Management with budget request. Goal 4: On-going commissioning (of existing buildings for improving performance) Action: Assess current practices for in-house commissioning (survey project managers, building occupants) and improve practices (Included in SEP) Goal 5: Complete annual report for energy use Action: Each fiscal year, pull in data and update indicators. Reassess where improvements are needed and make recommendations to Sr. Management for funding line.
UCSB Sustainability Food Achievements: Increase organic offerings in H&RS dining and various UCen dining Increase vendor organic offerings in stores on campus Increase contracts for locally grown organics In renovations, implemented more efficient equipment (energy and water savings) Re-use of cooking oils for fuels
UCSB Sustainability Food Goals: Continue to increase percentage of organic offerings If compost program is successful, convert packaging to bio-based products
UCSB Sustainability Landscape/Biotic Environment Achievements (CCBER): Compost green waste at nursery for potting soil Use horse manure from stables in compost Irrigate only during first year of establishment Restoration Intern Training Program Use only local genotypes of native plants, maintain native plant communities, reduce invasive species 50% of vehicles are electric Minimal use of gas powered machines Minimal use of herbicides (only on bermuda grass, fennel, kikuyu grass) Providing support for food web, e.g. predators
UCSB Sustainability Landscape/Biotic Environment Achievements (FM): Use reclaimed water for most all irrigation, and using irrigation levels appropriate to the plant material Capture all green waste and sending it clean to be mulched by Marborg 25 of our Grounds staff have taken the CEC Green Gardener course GOAL: Our next big push will be better metrics on turf area mapping and assessing all our mowing machines for fuel efficiency on an acres cut per unit of diesel rating, now that diesel is so expensive. We will then further tune our mowing, and look at phasing out less efficient machines
Landscaping/Biotic Environment - CSP Short-term Goals Summary Achieved Person Responsible Estimated Costs Estimated Date of Completion Goal #1 Collect data to determine baseline on: irrigation, energy usage, and chemical use. N Lisa Stratton - CCBER; Jon Cook - Facilities, Dan Heedy - Housing ~ $10,000 per org. Mar-09 Goal #2 Support student and intern projects to evaluate sustainability of landscape practices. Initiated CCBER funded a student to take a first stab at this. Some data not available ~$12,000 to expand the project Goal #3 Identify opportunities to inform the campus community about current sustainable practices in landscaping. Initiated CCBER has installed information signs about restoration on campus but not specifically about sustainability, FM & Housing have purple reclaimed water signs. Need to look for other ways to inform students, e.g. newspaper ~ 2,000 for a student intern Goal #4 Initiate a project assessing the relative sustainability of native-dominated landscaping opportunities vs. traditional landscaping. Initiated CCBER completed a poster on this with available data and presented it at Soc. For Ecological Restoration in 2006 and in their newsletter, but it needs more data (from goal 1) for broader publication.
UCSB Sustainability Procurement Achievements: Sustainability criteria now embedded into systemwide strategic sourcing agreements EPP catalog at Central Stores Central Stores decrease cost of recycled content paper - results 71% of paper purchases now have recycled content
UCSB Sustainability Procurement Goals: Electronic commerce: Evaluate new systems and determine funding requirements to purchase electronic and paperless systems for all procurement and accounting operations Commodities Expand environmentally preferable purchasing across the spectrum of commodity buying at UCSB and system-wide Policy Education and Outreach Develop clear guidelines for environmentally preferable procurement across a broad range of commodities and outreach sustainability practices to campus
UCSB Sustainability Transportation Achievements: Bus Pass Subsidy The combination of UCSB Subsidized MTD Bus Pass and High Fuel Prices have increased Faculty/Staff bus use by 69% between, June 2007 and June 2008 UCSB Vanpool UCSB's 11 vanpools alone reduce vehicle miles traveled by campus commuters by up to 3.2 Million miles per year. The Vanpool program in turn reduces the consumption of gasoline by campus commuters by 128,000 gallons per year which would have created 2.3 Million pounds of Carbon Dioxide, a common green house gas. Fleet Increase alt fuel vehicles in the fleet
UCSB Sustainability Transportation Goals: Complete AASHE Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) Assist with implementing an annual modesplit survey for campus faculty, staff, and students Identify other measurements we need to put in place Reevaluate fleet purchase process priorities and coordinate with Purchasing Re-assess goals and priorities for year
UCSB Sustainability Waste Achievements: Pilot the zero waste program at Ellison Hall Determine current regulatory framework and adjust accordingly Determine the recyclability of lab plastics Work with Procurement Team on 50% catalogue reduction Work with Grounds Team to assist them with improving green waste practices Work with AS and all campus departments on standardization of recycling processes and campus education Evaluate and update current goals based on current years findings
UCSB Sustainability Waste Goals: Successful compost pilot (6 months) Implement needed modifications to compost program and complete full roll-out to campus Indoor recycling pilot-2 months Implement needed modifications and roll-out pilot to a sector of campus Craft campus recycling long-term plan Conversion to bio based products for packaging food/drinks A successful Recyclemania program for winter quarter
UCSB Sustainability Water Achievements: Added low flow adapters in supply lines in Rec Cen Installed waterless urinals: Girvetz remodel (2006/2007), 50% of public urinals in residence halls (07-08) Changed plumbing specs to include sustainability at FM/HRS Extended the reclaimed water irrigation Added/installed new water meters Extended the chilled water loop to include additional buildings
UCSB Sustainability Water Goals: Goal 1. Coordinate with FM and Planning to create GIS map of the campus and assess missing data for three water types: potable, reclaimed, and storm water Goal 2. Develop budget and make recommendation for meters (including labor & connection to metasys) for monitoring water use of all types Goal 3. Update water indicators, assessing data, and update list if low-hanging fruit we can go after for simple water reductions
