Analysis procedure to define a management strategy PREVIOUS ANALYSIS Definition of system border of the management area Study of the area Geography Livestock Agriculture Spatial Analysis Relation farms land Nutrient balance (kg nutrient /ha/year) Analysis of the problems found, social consensus Alternatives for the management scheme: Pros and cons of each alternative Selection of a management scheme. Individual solution according to specific characteristics of the studied area. Goal: To define a management strategy that is and socially acepted. environmentally correct, sustainable

The Project LIFE ES-WAMAR: LIFE 06 ENV/E/ ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT OF SWINE WASTE BASED ON INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY: A DEMOSTRATION PROJECT SET IN ARAGÓN (SPAIN) Participants: CO-FUNDER: COORDINATOR: PARTNERS:

OBJECTIVES General Objective: Correct management of the slurry from the environment, economic, and social perspective To valorise the slurry as Organic Fertiliser (Nutrient recycling). To Create a model based on integrated management. To increase the energy effiency. To avoid social rejection Dissemination of the achieved results of the project in seminars, demonstration events, scientific publication and through the website: Transfer of the gathered experience to other areas with similar problems Increase of the sustainability of the pig farming sector fomenting the rural development. Carrying out environmental controls in order to evaluate the proposed objectives.

Large scale demonstration project about pig slurry management 3 zones: Tauste, Maestrazgo, Peñarroya Integrated Management Establishing of 3 (non-profit) Swine Waste Management Enterprises (SWME) Creation of jobs Environmentally correct Management of t/year of pig slurry Organic Fertilisation of ha of crop land. PARTICIPATION of: Approx. 300 pig farmers Approx. 350 land farmers 5 pig farmers associations 3 land farmers associations Local Entities (Counties/Municipalities)

ADVANTAGE OF THE INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT Access to the best technologies (BAT) Cost sharing among farmers (cost reduction) Facilitates the environmental control Improvment of energy efficiency. Reduction of administrative work load Common schedule for slurry application Foster the rural development and its sustainability. Creation of a collective conscience and of a responsible management of pig manure.

MANAGEMENT MODEL SWINE WASTE MANAGEMENT ENTERPRISE TRATAMIENTO

USE OF BEST AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGIES Integrated Management plans adjusted to geographic conditions. New Technologies in the use of the by-products from livestock farming as organic fertiliser. Geographic Information communications System (GIS) and Sampling, analysis and control equipment. Pipeline transport ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC OPTIMISATION OF THE WHOLE MANAGEMENT PROCESS.

FUNCIONALITIES Traceability Administration of entities Supervision and control of storage Supervision and control of crops Elaboration of work orders Generation of reports Map Alarms Events

FUNCTIONS OF THE SWME Homogenising, analysis and collection of the slurry from the farms. Planning: rates, schedules (how, when, where how much) Coordination of banks of slurries and land Application of the slurry on the fields of arable crop land using Best Available Technology. Transport to intermediate storages. Maintainance of infrastructure, equipment Register and control of the slurry movement. Reduction of the contents of nutrients: biologic treatment. Implementation of a biosecurity plan. Organisation of Information seminars for livestock and land farmers. Administrative and business work Responsible of the management scheme towards public institutions ALL TASKS RELATED WITH THE HANDLING OF MANURE

TAUSTE 10% of the area is a vulnerable zone 26 % of the farms are in the vulnerable zone

TAUSTE Foundation of the SWME Manager working since May 07 Technician working since April 08 Actual Registration: approx. 60 pig farmers, 280 land farmers Slurry volume of registered pig farmers: m3. Objective: m3 2 slurry tractors through service contract 1 slurry tractor acquired. Application started this year Intermediate slurry store (8.000 m3) designed Further storage capacity m3 Analysis of slurry started

MAESTRAZGO COUTNY Mountainous Area Municipalities with many pig farms: La Cuba, Mirambel und Cantavieja Large Distances between the villages Abandonned acres Bad situation of roads Landscape of high value

SWME Founded Manager working since Registration of approx m3 ( m3 expected) 2 slurry tankers adquired, and working Application starts soon Construction of infrastrcture in progress: 8 slurry tanks (7x1500 m3, 1x1000 m3), 2 pipeline systems Analysis in preparation LIFE 06 ENV/E/000044

In Aragón there are currently being under study: 3 Zones, where to implement pilot plants, different plant sizes General plan for pig slurry management Combination with biogas technology because of the following reasons: Treatment plants have a high energy demand, and in consequence, high energy costs Electricity production in biogas engines: income through electricity sales. Controlled production of methane Reduction of GHG emission (CO2 instead of CH4) Further Reduction of GHG emission through co-generation of electricity and head (substitution of non-renewable resources) Closed cycle concept: digestate valorisation as fertiliser on crop fields and/or as energy source on farms.
