4 Surface modification is being widely used to improve the properties of matenals in various industrial fields_ The use ofcoatings and films to modify materials surfuce has also hecome a hot topic Consequently, a growing number of scientists and engineers are engaged in surface modification of materials. Recognizing the ever increasing importance of surface modification technologies, many books on the science, technology, and processes in this area have been published. 5 About the Editors Xuallyo llg Liu is associate professor o f ltiaicrials engineering in Shanghai Institute of Ceramic. Chinese Academy of Sciences (S ICCAS), and professor of Hunan University. He received his BS and MS in materials science and engineering from Hunan University and 1999, respecti vely and PhD in materials science and engineering from SICCAS in His doctoral di sertat ion was awarded the National Exce llent Doctoral Dissertation of PR China in Prof. Liu 's primary research focus is on surface modification o f biomaterials. He has founded the surface engineering of biom31criais group in SICCAS and has published over 80 journal papers in internati onal journals. Paul K. Chu is professor (chair) ofmatcrials engin eering in City Univers ity of I-long Kong. He received his BS in mathematics from The Ohio State University in 1977 and MS and PhD in chemistry from Cornell University in 1979 and 1982, respectively. Paul' s research activities are quite diver.:e encompass ing plasma surface eng ineering and vanous types of materials and nanotechnology. Prof. Chu has published over 600 journal papers and been granted 8 US and 3 Chinese patenls. He is Fellow of the IEEE, AVS. and HKI E. senior editor of IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. associate editor of international Journal of Plasma Science and Engineering, and a member of the editorial board of Materials Sc ience & Engineering: Reports.
