Geothermal integration in Smart cities: Key Innovation in Smart Thermal Grids Philippe Dumas, European Stakeholder Platform on Smart Cities and Communities Dublin, Tuesday 23rd April, Workshop on Geothermal Technology

Smart cities & communities The EC launched the Smart Cities and Communities European Innovation Partnership on 10 July The partnership proposes to pool resources to support the demonstration of energy, transport and information and communication technologies (ICT) in urban areas. The funding is awarded through yearly calls for proposals: 365 million for The "Smart Cities & Communities Initiative" supports cities and regions in taking ambitious measures to progress by 2020 towards a 40% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable use and production of energy. EC, JRC The EERA-JP Smart Cities

Smart cities & communities Challenges: each city is different. With 3 areas & urban density: city centre, districts & suburbs with parks, etc. Solutions: provide guidelines, methodologies, demo plants and scenario for replication Research areas: Energy in cities Urban energy networks Energy efficient interactive building Energy supply technologies

Description Issue: Develop smart thermal grids (h&c > 60% energy of cities) Approach: - 1st generation: Retroffit and decarbonise DHC, develop off-grid RES systems - 2 nd generation: deploy Intelligent thermal grids, interconnected Innovation: Low temperature, RES integration, connection to electricity, storage

Flexible: Characteristics of smart thermal grids - short-term: adapt to energy supply and demand situation; - medium-term: adapt by adjusting the temperature level in existing networks and through the installation of new distributed micro-networks; - long-term: adapt by aligning the network development with urban planning. Intelligent: planning and operation, end-users interaction with the h&c system Integrated: urban planning and urban networks electricity, sewage, waste, ICT, etc. Efficient: optimal combination of technologies and cascade usage. Competitive: cost-effective, affordable Scalable: for neighbourhood-level or city-wide application. Securing energy supply: security of supply at a local level.

Deployment Technology: RES, DH, UTES, off-grid system Finance: capital intensive, low operational costs, competitive Organization: Design, optimise and operate, monitor smart thermal grids Suitable city context: anywhere in Europe, firstly in cities with dense urban areas

Expected impacts Energy supply: develop RES (GT,ST,BT) GHG emissions: reduction > 50% CO2 emissions Financial impacts: 2-3 Mio / MWth Other city benefits: Local development, security of supply, affordability of energy for citizens Other impacts: Balance smart electricity grids (HP + UTES)

Case Study: Smart Thermal Grid TU Delft in the Netherlands Heat / cold sources: 2 CHP plants (4 MWth, 4 MWel), 3 gas boilers (80 MWth) 3 Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage systems (ATES) 4 transmission pipelines in High Temperature (HT) network (80 to 130 C) 42 heat exchangers Heat / cold specificities: classrooms, offices, student housing Heat / cold generation mostly decentralized Combining both renewable and conventional heating plants Implemented together with building renovations in the TU district Develop an Intelligent heating network Heat Customers and suppliers connected through intelligent balancing schemes Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage systems

Geothermal technologies for Smart cities Geothermal HP for individual and tertiary buildings for low t h&c UTES: BTES or ATES for h&c storage (low and medium t ) Geothermal DH and other direct uses for low to medium h&c t Geothermal CHP for medium to high t h&c for electricity

Contribution to the 1st generation Decarbonise H&C systems in urban areas For off-grid individual and tertiary buildings For DH and other h&c applications

Contribution to the 2nd generation Smart thermal grid: renewable, intelligent and efficient Geothermal HP for individual and tertiary buildings Geothermal DH and other direct uses Geothermal CHP connection to electricity Storage: UTES: BTES or ATES +
