April 2008 Q-Meeting QA Update: Upcoming 2008 Sampling Manual and more! Shannon Gerardi QA Officer

Overview Updates per Sampling Manual Section since last Q-Meeting (April 2007) Future updates: when State SOPs are approved (midsummer?) when Cycle 3 decisions are finalized Find the Summer 2008 Sampling Manual with all of the updates at (username: water password: monitoring )

Section 4: Groundwater Update: Calculating equipment volumes use when standard equations are not useable due to unknown variables or for wells where the screened interval is known use the following equation:

Section 4: Groundwater (continued) V = p + ((0.041) d x d x l) + fc Where: V= volume in gallons p= volume of pump in gallons d= tubing diameter in inches l= length of tubing in feet fc= volume of flow cell in gallons

Section 4: Groundwater Update: Wells Purged Using Equipment Volumes ( minimizing purge ) 1. If applicable, place the pump intake within the screened interval. 2. Purge until the water level has stabilized (well recovery rate equals the purge rate), then purge a minimum of 1 equipment volume (pump, tubing and flow cell) prior to collecting stabilization readings.

Section 4: Groundwater (continued) 3. Take stabilization readings no sooner than 2 to 3 minutes apart. 4. Purge at least 3 equipment volumes prior to collecting the sample. If stability has not been met, continue purging until stabilization.

Section 4: Groundwater Clarification: Which time and parameters are recorded on the custody sheet and the sample containers? final field measurement after reaching stability on the custody sheet sample collection time on the custody sheet should match the Time Sampling Begins section of the field sheet Time Sampling Begins should be recorded on the sample containers

Section 5: Surface Water Clarification: Which time and parameters are recorded on the custody sheet and the sample containers? Primary (surface) field measurements on the custody sheet sample collection time on the custody sheet should match the Primary field measurement time Primary time should be recorded on the sample containers

Section 5: Surface Water Update: Preserve the phytoplankton bottle with 3 ml of Lugol s solution.

Section 7: HA Update: No HA/SCI for systems not functioning as a stream or river HA/SCI will be performed for canals and ditches (as long as they meet the other existing HA/SCI requirements) HA/SCI will be performed for low or minimal flow (0.05 m/s) systems but this needs to be commented on the phys/chem, sheet and in OGWIS comments section under the recon tracking tab

Section 7: HA Update: Flood conditions >1 meter above normal, wait 28 days (1 month) or until the water recedes, normal flow returns and the habitats become accessible <1 meter above normal, sample habitats at the normal stream shoreline, not the flooded shoreline

Section 9: Preservation Update: Phytoplankton samples: 1 liter brown plastic container labeled DTY- QN-C, PKD-QN-C preserved with Lugol s solution (iodine) in the field add 3 ml and invert several times to mix not considered hazardous, but it can stain clothing and hands, so use caution

Section 10: Documentation Update: For Surface Water Field Sheet documentation: Waterbody Name (if known) and SCI Collection Information

Update: Section 11: Custody and Shipment New contacts for lab: Tim Fitzpatrick Ramsey White (or ) Kate Brackett

Section 11: Custody and Clarification: Shipment If any information printed on the reverse of the custody sheet is submitted differently, this information must be documented in the comments section on the front.

Section 11: Custody and Clarification: Shipment Which time and parameters are recorded on the custody sheet and the sample containers? same as earlier slides

Update: Section 11: Custody and Shipment The DHL shipping document will be added ( Packing and Shipping Procedures for DHL Coolers )

Update: Section 11: Custody and Delayed RQs: Shipment more than 2 weeks, please contact the FDEP QA Officer (or contact the lab directly Kate Brackett) also includes any RQs that have samples that won t be submitted to the lab at all due to exclusions, etc.

Section 12: QA/QC Correction: Changed FRS acceptance criteria for specific conductance from 5% to 7%.

Section 15: Appendix Figure 3- new Groundwater Custody Sheets

Section 15: Appendix Figure 4- new Surface Water Custody Sheets

Section 15: Appendix Figure 12- new Surface Water Field Sheet

Section 15: Appendix Figure 12- new Surface Water Field Sheet

Section 15: Appendix Figure 12- new Surface Water Field Sheet

Section 15: Appendix Figure 13- clarification for depth measurements total water depth Definition of Depth Measurements: All Surface Water Resources primary measurement bottom measurement total # measurement samples collected Less than 10 cm No samples 10 cm..05 meter (5 cm) 1.05 m >10 cm but less than or equal to 30 cm. >30 cm. but less than or equal to 1.5 meters Greater than 1.5 meter mid depth or.3 meters, which ever is shallower.3 meter below surface.1 m (10 cm) 1.1 m.1 meter (from bottom).1 meter (from bottom) 2 2 mid depth or.3 meters, which ever is shallower.3 meter below surface

Future Updates? Updated State SOPs should become effective Summer 2008 = a new Sampling Manual SCI and HA Training Checklists (FA1000) should already be using, but not official until SOP release

Future Updates? Updated HA testing procedures 4-5 sites per region selected on an annual basis Local experts and DEP experts will establish median scores When samplers need testing, contact FDEP QA Officer for a list of sites in their area (including maps and directions)

Future Updates? (continued) Samplers will test at designated sites on their own time and submit scores and paperwork to FDEP QA Officer when finished Results will be sent to testers, including the expert evaluations and explanations New sites will be selected each year

Future Updates? FQ1000 Addition of collecting blanks for sediment samples (aqueous blank)... FS1000 Updated temperature preservation requirement; < 6 C instead of 4 C for water matrix Updated holding time for alkalinity; 14 days instead of 4 days Updated acid preservation for metals; HNO3 24 hours prior to analysis instead of immediately (no field preservation, but we will continue to do so...)

Future Updates? FS2200 Install a new, 1-foot maximum length of silicone tubing in the peristaltic pump head. New procedures for large-volume, highrecharge wells Place pump at the top of the open borehole segment Purge at least 1 equipment volume before measuring stabilization parameters

Future Updates? (continued) Monitor stabilization parameters for an extended period until confident that sufficient volume has been pumped from the open borehole to draw fresh formation water Purge at least three equipment volumes before evaluating purging completion

Future Updates? FS7000 Addition of Qualitative Periphyton Sampling (for Status Streams and Rivers?) Addition of Rapid Periphyton Survey Sampling (for Status/Trend Streams and Rivers?) Addition of Lake Vegetation Index (LVI) Sampling (for Status Small and Large Lakes)

Future Updates? FT1700 Secchi measurement from the SHADED side of the boat.

Future Updates? FT3000 Addition of updated method used to determine habitat smothering Addition of updated method used to determine artificial channelization Addition of updated method used to determine bank stability Updated HA scoring form (FD9000-5) to reflect these additions

Future Updates? Cycle 3 Updates: new sampling design new analyte list coming up later today...

Reminder... Check your conductivity standards... 5,000 μmhos/cm Lot #: Expiration Date: August 2008 Let me know if you have any!

Questions? Shannon Gerardi
