Best Facade Best Practice for Double Skin Facades Reinhard Waldner, MCE Anlagenbau Austria
Introduction Basic Requirements for a facade: comfortable indoor climate sound protection good lighting minimal energy input MCE Anlagenbau Austria GmbH & Co page 3
Introduction A Double Skin Facade (DSF) can provide: a thermal buffer zone solar preheating of ventilation air energy saving sound protection wind protection with open windows pollutant protection with open windows fire protection nocturnal cooling aesthetics site for incorporating PV cells MCE Anlagenbau Austria GmbH & Co page 4
Project aims Best Practice Guidelines based on a comprehensive survey of DSFs Information on built examples of DSF office buildings Avoid application of non relevant concepts of DSFs Confidence concerning operating performance investment and maintenance costs shall be increased MCE Anlagenbau Austria GmbH & Co page 5
Workpackages MCE Anlagenbau Austria GmbH & Co page 6
Partners MCE Anlagenbau Austria GmbH & Co page 7
WP1 State Of the Art Collection of data on DSFs in different countries and climatic regions Centralized Information System Performance Data Development of a coherent typology Basic principles, history MCE Anlagenbau Austria GmbH & Co page 8

The BESTFACADE project will actively promote the concept of double skin facades. Information supporting the design of energy efficient and healthy office buildings equipped with DSFs. Detailed practical information in order to design, choose, manage, use and maintain double skin facades. MCE Anlagenbau Austria GmbH & Co page 18
Designers can avoid the application of not well functioning concepts of DSFs resulting in increased energy consumption and bad indoor climate. With the best practice guidelines the knowledge and confidence concerning performance, investment, operation and maintenance of DSFs shall be increased. MCE Anlagenbau Austria GmbH & Co page 19
