Campus Housing Energy Efficiency Retrofit (CHEER) Program California Lutheran University Strategic Energy Innovations Presenters: Mark Jacobsen Danny McKnight Morgan King
CHEER Program Overview Help reduce energy waste on California s college and university housing and dining facilities. Provide professional grade efficiency analyses. Recruit and train students and staff to conduct energy audits and basic lighting upgrades. Support the campus to envision and realize sustainable living demonstration projects. Provide financial incentives, training and partner outreach to make these student-staff led efforts a success.
CHEER Program Objectives Work to establish strong relationship with key campus partners. Provide Students with the skills and knowledge to generate energy savings. Identify and implement energy efficiency measures. Increase awareness of energy efficiency and environmental protection across the campus community.
Program Objectives Work to establish strong relationship with key campus partners Contacted Facilities Management. Contacted Environmental Science Department in effort to locate interested students to take part in survey and internship opportunity. Contacted student housing department.
Program Objectives Provide Students with skills and knowledge to generate energy savings Trained interns in energy auditing /reporting and CFL installations.
Program Objectives Identify and implement energy efficiency measures Conducted energy audits in residence hall and houses. Replaced incandescent bulbs with new CFLs.
Program Objectives Increase awareness of energy efficiency and climate protection across the campus community. Residence Life communicates to students via and web page prior to returning to school. CFL giveaway during student orientation. Door-to-door CFL giveaway. Information sheet hand-out about energy conservation and CFL recycling.
Increase Awareness Campus wide Collaboration Residence Life communicates to new and returning students via and web page to leave incandescent bulbs home when returning to campus for beginning of school.
Increase Awareness - Engaging Students CFL giveaway during student orientation Door-to-Door CFL giveaway after move-in. Handed out information sheet hand-out about energy conservation
Project ramp-down Final information gathering from interns, which included the tracking of the number of CFLs installed as well as the amount given to students during giveaway efforts. Findings were shared with campus leadership and were utilized in the comprehensive energy audit report later developed by QuEST. Return of unused CFLs. CLU web page release.
