2 2.0 PROJECT TITLE & DESCRIPTION Each year in America, an average of 30 kilograms of used textiles per person is sent to landfills, amounting to a total of over 9 billion kilograms annually. It is estimated that 95% of these used textiles could be reused, repurposed or recycled. The goal of the TO Stool is to adjust throwaway habits by encouraging and facilitating the diversion of used textiles into circular life cycle streams. A removable bag located underneath the seat, which is often wasted space, creates a dedicated area within the home for the storage of textiles intended for donation or recycling. Once full, the bag can easily be removed for transporting to donation facilities. To minimize expenses and the carbon footprint related to shipping, TO was designed to be packaged with the materials flat packed resulting in minimal dimensions. To achieve this, perforations along the bend lines were incorporated to allow users to easily bend and assemble their stool at home. In addition to encouraging reuse and recycling, TO is designed with highly recyclable and C2C certified materials. At the end of the stool s lifecycle, the aluminium frame can easily be disassembled and infinitely recycled; the renewable wood base can be repurposed or composted along with the Reworx textile bag.

4 3.0 REUTILIZATION CYCLE AND BUSINESS MODEL The three core materials of the TO Stool were selected to create a robust product and ensure an extended useful life, while also being cyclical. Fasteners were minimized to three hex screws used to fasten aluminium to itself, in order to ensure each material would be easily separable at the end of its useful life, facilitating the recycling process. In addition, the TO stool takes it one step further by not only contributing to its own reutilization cycle, but also that of textile. Ideally two positive outcomes could come from a dedicated space within the home for used textiles. Firstly, it has the potential to shift consumer habits away from throwing used textiles in the garbage, and subsequently the landfill. As a result, these useful materials can contribute to the circular economy for reuse, re-purposing or recycling. Secondly, as opposed to textiles being out of sight and out of mind after being thrown away, the amount of clothing in the TO stools bag would give users a visual feedback of just how much textile they are consuming. In theory, this would challenge consumer habits and make users think twice about replacing perfectly wearable clothes. Major fashion brands could promote the use of TO in order to encourage more sustainable textile habits, while the brands themselves could benefit from an increased donation of used textiles in order to meet their sustainability goals. TO could also increase the visibility of donation programs provided by certain brands which consumers may otherwise be unaware of. At the end of the useful life of the TO Stool, incentives in the form of instore clothing discounts would promote consumers to return the stool and allow the materials to be fully utilized. To maximize the probability that the materials will end up in the circular economy, if not returned to the manufacturer, TO could make use of existing municipal infrastructure to take the materials from cradle to cradle. The aluminium can be included in municipal metal recycling collection while the Reworx Textiles and wood could be industrially composted. 4.1 MATERIAL OVERVIEW ACCOYA WOOD (RADIATA PINE) Performance & Durability: Increased hardness and high strength to weight ratio compared to non-treated wood, allowing for reduced material usage for similar results Sustainability: Sourced from sustainable forests and can be safely repurposed or recycled INFINITO YARN AND REWORX S Performance & Durability: Strong abrasion, laundering and pilling resistance for extended useful life Sustainability: Designed to be 100% compostable ALUMINIUM ALLOY 3003 Performance & Durability: Easily workable for consumer bending/assembling (in which perforations assist) as well as highly durable, especially with structural bends Sustainability: Infinitely recyclable without material degradation EXPLODED

5 4.2 MATERIAL REUTILIZATION 4.4 MATERIAL IMPACT STATEMENT 96% Recycled or Rapidly Renewable Products can require a considerable amount of resources and energy to create, so it s of the utmost importance that this energy is fully reutilized and recaptured at the end of its useful life. Designers must take care in both selecting sustainable materials as well as ensuring that these materials can be separated efficiently at the end of its useful life. For this reason, the product s lifecycle should be in the designer s mind from step one of the design process. The C2C Certified Material Database facilitates the process of sustainable material selection, informing designers of the materials certification levels in different categories and preventing the often time-consuming task of gathering this information individually. Incorporating C2C Certified Materials into the TO Stool gave me confidence that the materials I was choosing would positively contribute to the circular economy. The C2C Certified Material Database allowed me to find materials with proven sustainability traits, such as Reworx Textiles, which fulfilled both my sustainability goals as well as the material requirements for the design. 100% Recyclable or Compostable/Biodegradable (95.8*1) + (100*2) 3 = MATERIAL HEALTH ACCOYA WOOD (RADIATA PINE) C2C Material Health Score: Platinum C2C Certified Product Scorecard MATERIAL HEALTH MATERIAL REUTILIZATION RENEWABLE ENERGY & CARBON MANAGEMENT WATER STEWARDSHIP SOCIAL FAIRNESS Platinum OVERALL INFINITO YARN AND REWORX S C2C Material Health Score: Platinum C2C Certified Product Scorecard MATERIAL HEALTH MATERIAL REUTILIZATION RENEWABLE ENERGY & CARBON MANAGEMENT WATER STEWARDSHIP SOCIAL FAIRNESS Platinum OVERALL ALUMINIUM ALLOY 3003 NFPA score: 0 ys.pdf 5.0 FUSION 360 Since the primary part of the design was sheet aluminium, the sheet metal environment of Fusion 360 allowed me to quickly and accurately design a part of higher complexity. In addition, the ability to create a flat pattern gave me confidence in knowing the part would bend into the correct form when getting relatively expensive prototypes laser cut. Being able to effortlessly switch between environments of Sheet Metal, Modelling, Patching, Rendering allowed a variety of geometry to complete the aluminium frame, textile bag and wood lid. In addition, the Static Stress Simulation function allowed me to find the ideal sheet metal thickness that would still hold the weight of users while minimizing the amount of material.
