1 Climate Positive Roadmap Summary BARANGAROO SOUTH POSITIVE ROADMAP SUMMARY INTRODUCTION Barangaroo South, a major waterfront development by Lendlease, aims to become a world-class sustainable precinct built on Sydney Harbour with Two key strategies in Climate Positive to offset emissions: commercial, residential, shopping, dining, and hospitality features. It extends Sydney s Central Efficiency/Impact Reduction: These are measures Business District to its western harbour, and is the that reduce the carbon impact from Energy, city s largest urban regeneration project since the Transport and, thereby reducing the total 2000 Olympics. Barangaroo South is a participant in operational annual carbon emissions on site. These the C40 Climate Positive Development Program. carbon savings through efficiency measures are necessary to reduce the baseline emissions impact C40 s Climate Positive Development Program sets but are not sufficient to achieve a final Climate out a framework that helps guide a project s journey Positive outcome. to achieve a net-carbon negative outcome in energy, waste and transportation, encouraging developers Climate Positive Credits: These measures often to create a revolutionary new model of ambitious have an impact that extends beyond the boundary sustainable development. 2 Climate Positive Roadmap Summary FIGURE 1: Open Space Rendering from Master Plan source: Lendlease To achieve these ambitions we have put in place a climate positive work plan for Barangaroo South. This considers in great detail the sustainability aspects of everything we are doing on the project and how it is delivered we have looked at the project from every angle to identify ways we can design out, share, minimise or recycle to genuinely reduce the impact that building Barangaroo South has on the planet and ensure we leave a positive legacy for the community. - Andrew Wilson, Barangaroo South Managing Director SITE OVERVIEW Barangaroo South covers 7.6 hectares and includes linked to already existing transportation networks, over 90 retail outlets and around 900 apartments. At along with a proposed new ferry hub, new bus its core sit the three towers of International Towers routes, cycle paths and limited parking facilities. Sydney, which will be Australia s most advanced and most sustainable high rise workplaces. What Located on one of the world s most notable gives Barangaroo South its unique character is its urban waterfronts, Barangaroo South provides dedication to providing opportunities for public use. exceptional insights into how coastal cities can Over 50% of the waterfront site will be devoted to successfully deliver climate positive developments useable public space, while the entire waterfront will while revitalizing shoreline ecosystems, protecting be open and accessible to the public. Community surrounding areas from future storm surges, and and public facilities will include a waterfront square, establishing a locus for environmental education and harbour cove, waterfront promenade, a park and services for city residents. plazas, and cultural facilities. 3 DETERMINING BASELINES In order to achieve a Climate Positive outcome, total emissions that enter the atmosphere as a result of the development s operational activity must be offset to a net negative level. To determine how this is to be done, a baseline assessment was determined to evaluate the development s impacts in a businessas-usual scenario using carbon dioxide emissions as a metric. With this baseline, Barangaroo South is committed to achieving an outcome that effectively renders the development operationally net negative, thereby providing a sustained positive impact on the environment. STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING POSITIVE Lend Lease has outlined a sustainability strategy for Barangaroo South that aims to reduce energy and emissions through a multifaceted approach to how the development will operate and achieve a climate positive outcome. This strategy focuses on three areas: Respect for resources Sustainable lifestyles Becoming future ready Below is the breakdown of the resources focus area into its various elements, each with commitments on what will be delivered by 2020 in terms of reduction strategies and achievement towards Climate Positive Credit according to C40 standards. CARBON REDUCTION STRATEGY The roadmap focuses on three strategies to reduce carbon: Avoid Through better building design, efficient infrastructure, and education and behavioral initiatives Reduce Implement on and off-site low carbon and renewable energy sources Ensuring recovery of all recyclable materials, including treatment and recycling of organic materials Onsite renewable energy generation Investigating options for co-generating and tri-generating on-site low carbon energy generation Mitigate Purchasing or providing conditions for carbon offsets to cover emissions on-site and residual emissions such as from daily commuters Carbon emissions from staff commuting will be mitigated through the purchase of carbon offsets through the precinct carbon community fund Install 6,000 sq. m of on-site solar panels to offset all energy required for all of Barangaroo s public spaces and the precinct recycled water plant Procure renewable energy certificates to remove emissions associated with residual electricity consumption through a dedicated offsite facility 67% Energy & on site initiatives 100% Business as usual GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS STAGE 1 Greenhouse Gas Emissions - Stage 1 9% Transport 3% 21% Off-site renewables Carbon Neutral FIGURE 3: Carbon Reduction Strategy Page 3
4 BUILDING ENERGY REDUCTION STRATEGY Barangaroo s energy reduction strategy aims to reduce the energy use of buildings within the development, as 40% of total global greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to buildings. As such, the development will have a positive environmental impact while also reducing energy bills in the process. The following strategies will be incorporated into building designs and operations: Vertical shading system Situated on the three commercial towers, this system follows the sun s path to reduce solar gain, provide superior shading, and reduce energy-intensive cooling needs. Metering, Monitoring, and Visual Displays Located in offices and homes, the displays help educate users in responsible energy consumption. Central Chilled Water Plant The largest of its kind in Australia, the plant will cool the precinct using harbour water. Achieving Green Star Standards Barangaroo will be home to the highest rated high-rise office buildings (6 stars) under Australia Green Building Council s Green Star rating tool. Additionally multi-unit residential buildings will target a 5 star rating, among the highest according to national Green Star standards. minimization, source segregation, resource recovery, and advanced waste treatment technologies to achieve reductions to zero untreated waste going to landfills. minimization Sustainable consumption and waste minimization through education and awareness programs, information and monitoring systems. Source segregation Improve and increase segregation through on-site facilities and procedures that maximize resource recovery. Technologies Investigate advanced resource recovery treatment options that can be delivered to other parts of the city to achieve a net zero waste outcome. TRANSPORTATION STRATEGY The transportation strategy for Barangaroo South aims to reduce total work-related trips by car to the site to 4% by 2018 to support the achievement of net-carbon zero emissions associated with travel to and from work. 23,000 workers, 1,200 residents, and 33,000 daily visitors will be encouraged to use green travel options through direct links to already existing train and bus networks, as well as proposed ferry and new bus routes, cycleways, and bike facilities. These goals will be pursued through collaborations between Lend Lease, the Barangaroo Delivery Authority and other government agencies to achieve some of the following: WASTE REDUCTION STRATEGY Barangaroo South will utilize a combination of waste Page 4 100% Business as usual 19% Minimisation 18% Resource recovery recyclables 58% Operational - Greenhouse Gas Emissions - Stage 1 Mixed Treatment 7% to energy Zero Emissions FIGURE 4: Reduction Strategy
5 Parking Restricted on-site supply to ensure diversity in utilizing more efficient transportation alternatives Pedestrians A dedicated tunnel link and surface routes to support major pedestrian access Rail Integration with existing rail services at Wynyard and the proposed Western Express City Relief Line Buses New services to Barangaroo South along with supporting infrastructure Cycling New bike paths and centralized facilities to encourage cycling in and to the site Ferries - new ferry terminals integrated into the foreshore of the development POSITIVE CREDIT PROJECTS A key component for the project is to quantify the development s ability to offset carbon emissions in the surrounding community in addition to the reduction strategies for the specific footprint of the development. Below are some of the projects and goals embedded in these focus areas that have potential to add to Barangaroo s climate positive goals: With a centralized chilled water plant, the site will have education programs on water use and overuse, blackwater and stormwater treatment and recycling systems with smart design, highlighting the strategies for how the development will become water positive by saving up to 100 million litres of water being taken from Sydney s water mains yearly. Lend Lease is exploring waste to energy technology to generate electricity that can be utilized off-site from waste sourced on-site. Protect and enhance surrounding natural environments such as the nearby marine habitat through improved sea wall design, water treatment and recycling into the harbour, cleanup of brownfields, native species introduction, and green roofs and walls. Develop training and skill sharing programs with an emphasis on green skills, resulting in 50,000 learning outcomes for 10,000 people from a range of priority groups in the surrounding area and 60,000 New South Wales students on specialist and critical areas across construction and associated trades as well as urban regeneration and sustainability strategies. Develop programming around healthy and sustainable recreation for residents, workers, and visitors such as walk to work days, bike sharing hub for the larger area, and hire schemes for bikes, boats, scooters, electric cars, roller blades, etc. Heightened ground plane and upgraded storm water infrastructure to ameliorate future climate change impacts and damages on surrounding areas. Offsite low carbon and renewable energy projects that reduce the GHG emissions of the precinct through a unique community carbon funding model FIGURE 5: Barangaroo South Under Construction Page 5
