1 Meeting Of the International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group SE 02 Introducing New Slovenské Elektrárne CEO 03 The main price Via Bona for our Company 04 MONTHLY NEWS FROM MOCHOVCE AND BOHUNICE POWER PLANTS June 2014 FIRST TSM WANO THIS YEAR IN MOCHOVCE Exchange of knowledge and sharing of experience among NPP operators REPRESENTATIVES OF INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS IN MOCHOVCE Directors and other representatives of nuclear The technical supporting mission of the World Association of Nuclear Operators, focusing on the use of a digital control system in MO34 to prevent human errors, took place on May in Mochovce. It was attended by representatives of nuclear power plants from Loviisa in Finland, Temelin NPP in CR, and a representative of WANO Moscow centre. They presented the experiences of other international operators in the Information and Training Centre. Slovenské elektrárne were represented by the future operators of Mochovce units 3 and 4. The team was led by Georgiy Raspopin, MC WANO representative. The programme also included a MO34 simulator presentation, with a demonstration of the unit control room staff activities during training at nominal and above-limit conditions. The first TSM in Mochovce this year was concluded by a discussion and presentation of conclusions by the NPP operation to the management. The WANO team praised the ergonomic design of the 3&4 unit control rooms, providing a good overview of the main parameters, regular monitoring, and assessment of the operation personnel by NPP operation management during the simulator training to prevent mistakes by using operational experience. The WANO team provided recommendations for example for training process modifications, project improvement with regard to the sorting of failure announcements, control over the preparation of logical signals by unit control room staff, and the possible introduction of electronic logbooks. These recommendations are currently being reviewed by SE professionals. Ferdinand Váczi power plants falling under the Moscow Centre of WANO operators from Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, China, Iran, Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine visited the Mochovce NPP on 10 April. The nuclear industry representatives received basic information about Slovenské elektrárne, the operation of nuclear power plants and the Mochovce units 3&4 construction project. They visited the construction site buildings and technology (turbine hall photo, unit control room and MO34 simulator). They were interested in the construction progress, as well as the commissioning of individual parts. The regular four-day WANO Board Meeting was preceded by discussions in Bratislava dealing with nuclear industry developments in each participating country.
2 2 15 years 15 years since Mochovce NPP Unit 2 commissioning 1-2 May 1999: Integral testing NSAC MEETING External look at the operation of nuclear power plants and the further improvement of their safety and reliability The regular semi-annual meeting of the Nuclear Safety Advisory Committee (NSAC) of Slovenské elektrárne was held on 9 11 April. Its members include international experts with long nuclear experience: John Moares, Great Britain; Peter Gango, Finland; Ignacio Lequerica, Spain; and Gábor Vámos, Hungary. NSAC s task is to give an external look at our operated nuclear power plants, and to provide recommendations for the further improvement of their safety and reliability. Committee members met the plant directors of both V2 and Mochovce, central engineering managers, and EMO plant fire brigade and unit control room staff. Committee recommendations regarded the management of project changes of safety important equipment, NPP personnel training programme improvement, and a prevention programme against the falling of foreign objects into open equipment. Another NSAC meeting will be held in November this year. Ľubomír Krenický End of Planned Overhaul of Bohunice V2 Unit 4 Safety of nuclear power plants in Slovakia is the top priority. The unit capability factor (UCF) of the four operated nuclear units in Slovakia (Mochovce and Bohunice V2) for last year (94%) is world top class, and was also reached thanks to successful short unit outages (81 days / 4 units). No reactor scrams were recorded last year. phasing of TG 1 to the grid Re-on 14 May finished the short (standard) unit 4 outage in EBO V2, which took from 26 April. It was 0.4 day shorter than the planned 19 days. It was the second GO of units in Slovak nuclear power plants this year, and the 29th general overhaul of this specific unit with partial refuelling (approx. one fifth). The main outage activities included the preventive maintenance of emergency power supply system 3 electric and I&C systems, general overhaul of the main circulation pipeline, and the inspection of the thrust flange, impeller and steam generator GO. Activities with a major influence on outage duration namely included reactor Equipment being applied during outage works dismantling, refuelling, reactor re-assembly, and containment tightness integral test (PERIS). Unit heat-up was followed by the pressure test of the primary circuit and steam generators, Dušan Bajzík stated, outage manager. Considering the duration of 18.6 days (including PERIS), this outage was the shortest in Slovenské elektrárne history. Outage preparation started with a 20-month advance, in line with the new outage management process introduced to nuclear power plants in Outages and repair form a standard part of nuclear power plant lifetime, and represent a long-term planned process. Š. Švolik SITE DRILL IN MOCHOVCE The goal is to memorize the activities performed only during extraordinary events The whole-plant drill was held in EMO and MO34 on 15 May. It included standard activities practised during the whole-plant drills, such as classified event (emergency situation), announcement, gathering and activities of the emergency response organization, informing of EMO and MO34 emergency group, warning employees and people under the power plant s responsibility, and practising protective measures including evacuation. We used the announcement and warning system with realistic acoustic warning signals, i.e. 2-minute oscillating and 2-minute steady tone, broadcast only inside the operated power plant and MO34 construction area. This drill, unlike others, also included connecting the scenario with a practise simulator, practising flooding measures in the diesel generator building, and the implementation of logistics and preparation for connection of mobile DG for blackout situations. It is also necessary to appreciate the involvement of MO34 that included core employees as well as suppliers emergency groups, and the evacuation of a group of MO34 contractors workers directly from the construction site. The annual performance of this kind of practise is per power plant regulations. Otto Lúdl
3 Shareholders of the Enel Group, the mother company of Slovenské elektrárne, elected a new Board of Directors during its General Assembly held on 22 May in Rome. Patrizia Grieco was elected to the position of BOD Chairwoman. 3 NEW SLOVENSKÉ ELEKTRÁRNE CEO ELECTED Changes in the top management positions in Slovenské Elektrárne and their Supervisory Board The General Assembly of Slovenské elektrárne appointed new members of the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Board during its session on 30 April. Luca D Agnese became the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company and replaced Paolo Ruzzini on 1 May. Luca D Agnese will have the same responsibilities as his predecessor, whose mandate terminated after eight years in the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO also responsible for the development of company activities in Central Europe. Slovenské elektrárne thanks P. Ruzzini for his excellent management of the company, and his contribution to the creation of a stronger, respected and successful company. The company has received several international awards since 2006 for activities ranging from operational excellence to the Corporate Responsibility Programme. Luca D Agnese, former Chairman of the Luca D Agnese Board of Directors and CEO of ENEL Romania, has extensive experience in power engineering company management. He served as the CEO of GRTN, the Italian transmission system operator, director of the Operation Division responsible for survey, management and investments in Terna, operator of the national transmission system after its merger with GRTN. He managed ENEL Romania, the largest foreign investor in electricity production in the region since Luca D Agnese graduated in physics from the University of Pisa, and received an MBA at INSEAD. He worked for 15 years for McKinsey, becoming a partner in He specialized in the public service sector (i.e. integrated services, electricity, gas, water). The General Assembly confirmed Maurizio Rossette, Luigi Michi and Livio Vido in their positions as SE Supervisory Board members, and Alda Paula Baldi as its new member. Radovan Okenka is the SB Chairman, and Carlo Tamburi its Vice-Chairman. (r) Safety Culture also includes rewarding employees for excellent safe behaviour Andrej Gažo Rewarded for improving awareness of potential risks and their prevention Rewarding employees for excellent safe behaviour and conservative approach to their work is also a safety culture tool, and rose significantly in Bohunice NPP V2 in the first quarter. This situation, when more power plant employees are proposed for reward, reflects the increased attention paid to their environment, i.e. local SE employees and their approach to safety. We cannot say that we haven t behaved safely in the past. It s rather that we haven t always paid sufficient attention to the good that we have, i.e. the safe behaviour of our and contractor s workers. There were three new proposals for presenting rewards in EBO V2 since the last reward of excellent safe behaviour: Marián Skripčák from the maintenance department: for influencing safe task performance (resolution of reliability of fast closing valves - FCV) and increased potential risk awareness. Andrej Gažo from engineering for potential risk awareness increase and prevention of events (he contributed to more safe and reliable operation of FCV). Jozef Gajduš from the same department for increased employees and work group knowledge of safety and potential risk awareness increase. All submitted proposals were approved by the Safety Culture Committee, and confirmed by the plant management. The committee and plant director have thus already rewarded 6 employees, and we would like to thank them for their contribution to safe and conservative behaviour. We would also like to thank all employees that pay attention to and report such positive examples of safe and conservative behaviour. In this way, they contribute to spreading safe behaviour awareness among EBO V2 employees. Pavol Ivanovič The ENEL Board of Directors, elected during its General Assembly in Rome on 22 May, had its first meeting under the leadership of its new Chairwoman, Patrizia Grieco. The Board of Directors elected Francesco Starace to the position of ENEL CEO. F. Starace s predecessor in this position was Fulvio Contri; ENEL s BOD Chairman s position had been held by Luca Colombo Grieco s predecessor. The Board of Directors will appoint individual internal committees during its next meeting.
4 4 OUR ENERGY FOR THE COUNTRY PROJECT STARTED OUR VIA BONA It is the first time in its history that Slovenské elektrárne received the main Via Bona award. Slovenské elektrárne organizes regular Open Plant events for people living in the NPP surroundings. Visitors can have a close look at the power plant operation and ask questions. Last year, we had more than 11 thousand visitors at 6 open plants. These events also include performances by regional bands. The company management also rewards non-profit organizations, focusing on events and activities beneficial for the local society. The public can also receive information about power plant operation and electricity production in the information centres, which were visited by record number of more than 22 thousand people, namely from primary and secondary schools, in the last year. In the case of specific events, we organize or participate in several public hearings for residents of cities and villages near plants per year. Andrek Kiska handing over the Via Bona award to. P. Ruzzini, SE CEO Slovenské elektrárne received the main Via Bona award for its complex and extraordinary approach to responsible business. Non-profit fund Pontis has been granting this award since 1998 to companies voluntarily contributing to the mitigation of negative trends and the improvement of positive business aspects beyond legislative requirements. We won with our Energy for the Country programme. The award was given to Paolo Ruzzini, SE CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors by Andrej Kiska, the new Slovak President. The primary goal of our company is to ensure safe, reliable, ecological and competitive electricity production. Corporate responsibility forms an inseparable part thereof we support projects in education, culture, sports and social affairs, develop care for employees, strive to adhere to ethical codes, and care for thorough communication with our stakeholders involved parties: employees, owners, business partners, communities, government, etc. The development of all activities was rewarded by the main award Responsible large company for 2013 during the 16th annual ceremony. This was the first time we had received this award. It belongs to all the employees participating in the daily support of local communities around our power plants. It is a challenge and motivation for us to continue the implementation of five energy projects for the country, said Ruzzini. Companies are only as strong as their employees depending on their motivation to become excellent, innovative and self-improvement, said Lenka Surotchak, Pontis CEO at the ceremony. The fund appreciated the care of power plants for their employees, the environment, and the surrounding communities. The communities around our power plants are among our most important stakeholders. Communication with them is developed through public information committees (OIK). They include representatives of the public, municipalities, and other parties that participate in the activity of the Mochovce and Bohunice regions. OIK members meet EMO and V2 EBO management, and discuss issues related to NPP operations. Direct contact with regional population proves that trust can be obtained and maintained only by transparent and true information. Safety first The goal is great: zero accident rate. To reach it, we have prepared many special programmes and campaigns. The company s ability to communicate all its strategic goals, plans and results with its employees - and to receive their feedback - is one of the main tasks. We manage this through cascade presentations attended by top management. We held 23 such presentations last year. Among the top power companies in Europe Slovenské elektrárne constantly aims to decrease the emissions of harmful substances into the environment. We minimize production in thermal power plants, giving preference to hydro and nuclear power plants. Last year, up to 90% of electricity was produced without emissions. The power plants also maintain a favourable decreasing trend in waste production. We achieved over 32% valorisation (reprocessing) of total volume last year. (r)
