1 LEED U.S. & INTERNATIONAL-NC & CS LEED TECHNICAL DATA SHEET EXPERTS IN SYNTHETIC PALM SOLUTIONS PALMEX INTERNATIONAL INC. is a specialized Canadian manufacturer that has been producing synthetic, eco-friendly palm leaves for tropical thatch roofing since To date, our company has collaborated on building projects for artificial thatch roofs in 42 different countries, with an ever-growing network of local distributors now located around the globe in 26 countries. We aim to maintain our reputation for innovation and our position as world leader in the provision of exotic roofing materials. To accomplish this, we will continue to do our very best in every aspect of the business, from technical research to on-site delivery, effectively and efficiently responding to each customer s needs. PALMEX Agents and Distributors are available to personally guide you through the choice of artificial thatch and palm products and accessories that best suit your individual purpose. In order for you to make a sound and informed decision, they will gladly draw up a detailed quote or cost analysis tailored to your very own building project. In choosing to build with PALMEX materials, you are choosing highly durable, resistant and recyclable products. You are opting for an aesthetic virtually identical to natural tropical roofing while buying yourself greater peace of mind with no maintenance and unbeatable longevity. ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE PALMEX is proud to supply its clientele with eco-responsible, 100% recyclable, heavy-duty and long-lasting tropical roofing. Our products are free of any toxic substances, designed according to ISO norms, and partially built from recycled materials. For environmental reasons, our packaging is kept to an absolute minimum when preparing product for shipping. Our industrial-strength and highly-resistant materials suit all climates. PALMEX products have been designed to provide a permanent, longterm solution to the problematic issue of the massive over-harvesting of natural resources throughout the planet for the purpose of building exotic roofing. Our products help minimize the negative effects that economic growth and real-estate development can have on the natural environment. 2 LEED 2009 International Program - Global Alternative Compliance Paths (ACP) As interest in the LEED rating system grew, the need to accommodate a growing number of international projects became more apparent. In an effort to make achieving LEED certification more accessible to projects worldwide, the U.S. Green Building Counsil (USGBC) has developed a series of Alternative Compliance Paths (ACPs) for projects outside the U.S. These ACPs have been developed with guidance from international green building experts and volunteers, and fully retain the integrity of LEED. The ACPs additional options are substitute credit and prerequisite requirements that establish a new and different way to demonstrate compliance with the stated intent of a credit or prerequisite. LEED INTERNATIONAL-NC & CS 2009 Synthetic Leaves from PALMEX INTERNATIONAL PALMEX INTERNATIONAL s synthetic leaves were especially designed to be laid directly on a roofing frame with a patented railing system. This product offers a full and effective exterior coverage in any weather and displays the following characteristics: 100% waterproof 20-year warranty Provides exceptional storm and wind resistance (can resist to winds of 106 mph / 170 km/h) A fire resistant version is available An ultraviolet radiation protection is incorporated to the product during manufacturing LEED U.S. & International Program with Global Alternative Compliance Paths (ACP) -NC & CS 2009 Summary Table Category Prerequisite Credits Points Potential contribution of Synthetic leaves* LEED U.S. & Internatio- LEED U.S. & International NC 2009 nal CS 2009 SS Sustainable Sites (NC) 28 (CS) WE Water Efficiency EA Energy and Atmosphere (NC) 37 (CS) 19 points 21 points MR Materials and Resources (NC) 13 (CS) 6 points 5 points IEQ Indoor Environmental Quality (NC) 12 (CS) 1 point IDP Innovation & Design Process RP Regional Priority points 4 points Total Up to 3 (NC) Up to 3 (CS) * It is important to consider that the total amount of possible points reflects the number of achievable points in each credit categories. 3 ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE (EA) SUSTAINABLE SITES (SS) S SS 7.2 Heat Island Effect Roof Does not contribute Option 1: Use roofing materials with a solar reflectance index (SRI) equal to or greater than the table below for a minimum of 75% of the roof surface. ROOF TYPE SLOPE SRI Low-sloped roof 2:12 78 Steep-sloped roof > 2:12 29 Option 2: Install a vegetated roof that covers at least 50% of the roof area. Option 3: Install high-albedo and vegetated roof surfaces that, in combination, meet the following criteria: ACP : For each option below, if SRI information is not available for the specified product, demonstrate compliance using the SRI calculator in California s Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings (California Code of Regulations, Title 24, Part 6; available at Worksheet.pdf). This calculator uses solar reflectance and thermal emittance to determine the SRI of roofing materials. INTERNATIONAL are relatively light-coloured roofing materials. However, the synthetic leaves cannot contribute to this credit since their solar reflectance index (SRI) is lower than the minimal SRI values required for this credit. The synthetic leaves solar reflectance, thermal emittance and solar reflectance index (SRI) are presented in the tables below: Sample Palmex Thatch Sample Palmex Thatch Solar reflectance (air mass 1,5) Low (5 W/m 2 K) Convection Coefficient Medium (12 W/m 2 K) emittance (300 K) High (30 W/m 2 K) EAp2 Minimum Energy Performance Select 1 of the 3 compliance path options described below. Chosen option must also be used for EA Prerequisite 2. 0 (required) Option 1 Whole building simulation: Demonstrate a 10% improvement in the proposed building performance rating for new buildings, or a 5% improvement in the proposed building performance rating for major renovations to existing buildings, compared with the baseline building performance rating. Calculate the baseline building performance rating according to the building performance rating method in Appendix G of ANSI/ ASHRAE/IESNA Standard (with errata but without addenda1) Option 2 Comply with the prescriptive measures of the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide appropriate to the project scope, for one of the following path: for Small Office Buildings 2004 or for Small Retail Buildings 2006 or for Small Warehouses and Self- Storage Buildings Option 3 Comply with the prescriptive measures identified in the Advanced Buildings TM Core Performance Guide developed by the New Buildings Institute. : Demonstrate performance that is equivalent to the above requirements by substituting appropriate benchmarks, protocols and metrics that use a local standard for establishing a baseline, and measure performance relative to that baseline. Analysis showing that a local standard is equivalent to the requirements of ASHRAE must be done by a World Green Building Council member organization that is an active participant on the LEED International Roundtable. The WGBC member organization must contact USGBC before conducting the analysis which must be done before submitting a project for certification. This analysis will need to be approved by USGBC before a project submits this ACP for certification. INTERNATIONAL can contribute to prerequisite EAp2. The product s thermal transmission properties are shown in the table below: Transmission Properties (ASTM C518-10) Results Description Value SI Units Value Imperial Units Resistance 0.12 K m 2 / W 0.70 F ft 2 h / BTU Conductivity W / m K BTU in / h ft 2 F PALMEX INTERNATIONAL s leaves are made of polyethylene, which is an non-reactive material that conducts neither heat nor cold. In addition, the layered installation method provides air pockets that maintain year-long cooler under-roof temperatures than the natural counterparts. PAGE 3

4 MATERIALS AND RESOURCES (MR) ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE (EA) S EA 1 Select 1 of the 3 compliance path options described below. Comply with EA Prerequisite 2 (Minimum Energy Performance). Option 1 Demonstrate a percentage improvement in the proposed building performance rating compared with reference building performance Calculate the baseline building performance according to Appendix G of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard (with errata but without addenda) using a computer simulation model for the whole building project. The rating, according to the chosen path in EA Prerequisite 2, is up to 19 points (NC) or 21 points (CS). ASHRAE Optimize Energy Performance 1 to 19 points (NC) 3 to 21 points (CS) One point (1) LEED NC and three (3) points LEED CS for an expected cost reduction of 12% (new buildings) or 8% (existing building renovations). Option 2 Comply with the prescriptive measures of the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide (1 point) appropriate to the project scope, for one of the following path: for Small Office Buildings 2004 or for Small Retail Buildings 2006 or for Small Warehouses and Self-Storage Buildings Option 3 Comply with the prescriptive measures identified in the Advanced Buildings TM Performance Guide developed by the New Buildings Institute. Core : Demonstrate performance that is equivalent to the above requirements by substituting appropriate benchmarks, protocols and metrics that use a local standard for establishing a baseline, and measure performance relative to that baseline. INTERNATIONAL can contribute to credit EA 1. In a LEED project, PALMEX INTERNATIONAL can rapidly provide all the documentation required for this credit. MR 3 Materials Reuse 1 to 2 points (NC) 1 point (CS) Use salvaged, refurbished or reused materials, the sum of which constitutes at least 5 % (1 point) or 10 % (2 points), based on cost, of the total value of materials on the project. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing components and specialty items such as elevators and equipment cannot be included in this calculation. Include only materials permanently installed in the project. Furniture may be included if it is included consistently in MR Credit 3: Material Reuse through MR Credit 7:Certified Wood. INTERNATIONAL only contribute to this credit when they are retrieved and reused in another project or if used for other purposes in the same project. When the synthetic leaves are new and installed in the project, they cannot contribute to this credit. These roofing products industrial strength make them highly resistant materials able to suit all type of climates. The BORA BORA & ALOHA synthetic leaves from PALMEX INTERNATIONAL in fact provide exceptional storm and wind resistance and have an estimated lifespan of 50 years or more. Nonetheless, should the circumstances require it, this product can be easily dismantled and re-used. PAGE 4

5 MATERIALS AND RESOURCES (MR) S MR 4 Recycled Content 1 to 2 points Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus 1/2 of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (1 point) or 20% (2 points) based on cost of the total value of the materials in the project. INTERNATINAL may contribute to this credit. The BORA BORA & ALOHA synthetic leaves contain 15% pre-consumer recycled content. (excluding internal waste). However, they don t contain any postconsumer recycled content. The recycled content value of a material assembly is determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content value MR 5 Regional Material 1 to 2 points Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered as well as manufactured, within 500 miles (800 km) of the project site for a minimum of 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total materials value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) must contribute to the regional value. The minimum percentage of regional materials is 10% (1 point) or 20% (2 points). : Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered as well as manufactured, within regional distances of the project site for a minimum of 10% (1 point) or 20% (2 points), based on cost, of the total materials value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) must contribute to the regional value. Regional distances are defined by the following options: The BORA BORA & ALOHA product from PALMEX INTERNATIONAL may contribute to this credit since 15% of the synthetic leaves is extracted, collected, treated and recovered within a 125 km radius of the final place of manufacturing (transported by truck). PALMEX INTERNATIONAL can rapidly provide all the information concerning the extraction, collection, treatment and manufacturing sites for all its products. The percentage calculation was performed by considering the requirements of Credit MR 5 and the maximum distance radius (which depends on the means of transportation used). This product s final place of manufacturing is located in Saint-Sauveur -des-monts, Quebec, Canada (J0R 1R7). The origin of the main components and the mean of transportation used must be validated for every project. Option 1: Within a radius of 500 miles (800 kilometers) from the project site Option 2: For building materials or products shipped in part by rail or water, the total distance to the project shall be determined by weighted average, whereby the portion of the distance transported by rail is divided by 3, the portion of the distance transported by inland waterways is divided by 2, the portion of the distance transported by sea is divided by 15, and added to the portion of the distance transported by any other means other than by rail, inland waterways, sea, or road, provided the total weighted average distance does not exceed 500 miles (800 kilometers) PAGE 5

6 REGIONAL PRIORITY (RP) INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (IEQ) S IEQ 3.2 Option 2 Develop an IAQ management plan and implement it after all finishes have been installed and the building has been completely cleaned before occupancy: Option 2 - Air testing Construction IAQ management plan: Before occupancy 1 point (NC) (CS) Indirect Conduct baseline IAQ testing, after construction ends and prior to occupancy, using testing protocols consistent with the United States Environmental Protection Agency Compendium of Methods for the Determination of Air Pollutants in Indoor Air or the ISO method listed in the table below. Testing must be done in a accordance with on standard; project teams may not mix requirements from the EPA Compendium of Methods with ISO. INTERNATIONAL are manufactured offsite. PALMEX INTERNATIONAL selects the most environmentally friendly products and components, which indirectly promotes a better IAQ. PALMEX INTERNATIONAL s products are free of any toxic substances and, when used on a building s roof, they may help complying to the requirements for IEQ Credit 3.2 Option 2: Air analysis. RP 1 Regional Priority 1 to 4 points / Indirect Earn 1-4 of the 6 Regional Priority credits identified by the USGBC regional councils and chapters as having environmental importance for a project s region. One point is awarded for each Regional Priority credit achieved; no more than 4 credits identified as Regional Priority credits may be earned. The USGBC has prioritized credits for projects located in the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam. All other international projects should check the database for eligible Regional Priority credits. Please refer to the Advantages and Aspects to Consider section of the Regional Priority credit. A database of Regional Priority credits and their geographic applicability is available on the USGBC website, TOTAL UP TO 30 POSSIBLE (NC) & 30 POSSIBLE (CS) INTERNATIONAL can contribute up to a total of thirty (30) points for a LEED U.S. & International-NC 2009 project & thirty (30) points for a LEED U.S. & International-CS 2009 project * It is important to consider that the total amount of possible points reflects the number of achievable points in each credit categories. The product by itself cannot achieve this score, as defined above, but is considered as a beneficial element in order to achieve LEED credits. PAGE 6
