EU project ClimaEast: Ukraine and Belarus join their efforts for the sake of conservation and sustainable use of peatlands Key project results in Ukraine and Belarus Vasyl Tolkachov, Project Manager Vladimir Koltunov, Project Manager
Project outcomes Ukraine To contribute to the climate change mitigation by means: building capacity of the National GHG inventory system of Ukraine in sector land use/land use change/forestry (LULUCF), namely organic soils carbon stock changes accounting; developing and testing at pilot region practical ecosystembased approach for degraded private arable peatlands conversion to semi-natural conditions with high value for local people and biodiversity conservation. EU project "ClimaEast: Conservation and sustainable use of peatlands", implemented by UNDP
Project outcomes Belarus To implement activities on optimization of Zvanec fen mire hydrological regime and to organize system of active regulation of water level To organize cutting of Zvanec and Sporava peatlands (bushes and reed) on the territory of 3500 ha and sustainable use of biomass: producing of fuel pellets and roofing material. To develop system for monitoring of the efficiency of biomass harvesting and precise identification of the carbon dividends To estimate impact of harvesting on indicator bird species and peatland ecosystems (vegetation proportions)
Benefits Disaster reduction (spontaneous fires) Optimization of hydrological regime - sustainable water level Reduction of CO2 emissions Support of local population (pastures, hayfields, berries, hunting, fishing, water, clean air). Creation of new working places/local businesses Eco-tourism, hunting, fishing Biodiversity conservation
Bushes and trees harvesting for chip producing (technological line1) Biomass harvester (biobaler) Collecting and transporting of bales Chip for energy purposes Flaker
Bushes and trees harvesting for chip producing (technological line 2) Flaker Trees cutting Chip for energy purposes
Reed harvesting as constructive material Reed harvester Collecting and transporting of reed Reed processing
Key results Ukraine Carbon stocks and fluxes assessment methodology for organic (peat) soils is developed, discussed and approved by the State Environmental Investment Agency of Ukraine. Monitoring program for carbon flux assessment in peatlands is developed and discussed. Guidelines and criteria for peatlands re-wetting projects are developed and discussed. Two cooperatives (Kukshyn and Vertiyivka villages) and Union of agricultural cooperatives Chernigivschyna ecological are established. Its capacity is strengthening. EU project "ClimaEast: Conservation and sustainable use of peatlands", implemented by UNDP
Key results Ukraine Cooperative s business plan is developed, discussed and agreed. Trainings for cooperatives were organized. Site re-wetting works (reconstruction) of hydro-technical facilities and installations of the combined irrigation-drainage Smolianka system are under implementation. Regional landscape park Nizhynskyy is established. Trainings for the personnel of protected areas are conducted. 4 ecological classes in pilot villages are equipped. 1 boiler on solid fuel was purchased for the school in Kolisnyky village. Annual environmental campaign Clean country is conducted. EU project "ClimaEast: Conservation and sustainable use of peatlands", implemented by UNDP
Key results Belarus 1. Monitoring of ecosysytems and ground water table in Sporava and Zvanec reserves organized, including monitoring of influence of biomass harvesting on indicator fauna species and vegetation proportions. 2. Engineering design for construction of access points and construction and maintenance of water-regulating devices in order to provide active regulation of the ground-water table at Zvanec natural reserve for conservation of peatland ecosystems and enabling to harvest (realization of the project IV quarter 2015). 3. Finalization of equipment procurement (termination 4 quarter 2015). 4. Contracts signed and harvesting of grass and wood vegetation started. Bushes an trees vegetation removed on the territory of 430 ha in Sporava and Zvanec reserves (2015 planned 143 ha). 50 t of dry biomass harvested in Zvanec reserve and 300 t of dry biomass of trees and bushes in Zvanec and Sporava reserves (35 t and 470 t planned) 5. Managed firing of dry vegetation tested to prevent accidental peatland fires (7 000 ha).
Project results sustainability is based on joint actions of the state agencies, local councils, scientific institutions, private sector, local population, and the project teams
Thank you!
