3 Public utility services Since its origins in the early 19th century, GDF SUEZ has been helping cities and businesses in confronting the challenges related to population growth, urbanization, higher standards of living and protection of the environment. The Group supports societal development that is equally based on economic growth, social progress and preservation of natural resources. The Group develops its three businesses (electricity, natural gas, energy and environmental services) around a model based on responsible growth to provide essential services to its customers every day. Its subsidiaries design innovative and effective solutions for individuals, communities and businesses to answer their needs in energy, water and waste management while fighting climate change and maximizing the use of resources. GDF SUEZ is today the world s leading utility and independent power producer as well as Europe s first gas company. Its unique profile is built on a profitable growth model based on key positions in Europe and North America and a strengthened presence in the fast-growing markets of Latin America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. 1 No. company in the utilities sector worldwide (Forbes Global 2000) 29 th company in the world overall (Forbes Global 2000) GDF SUEZ. 4 A responsible growth model Energy has always been essential to the development of societies. In 2010, its global consumption rose by more than 5% while CO2 emissions reached a historical high. As an essential factor for long-term growth, the advent of a low-carbon economy entails significant efforts in order to curb global warming, control greenhouse gas emissions generated by economic activity, thus limiting costs and impacts over the long term. The main challenge lies in developing the means of production and infrastructure necessary for growth without disrupting social and environmental balances. Ultimately, reducing our emissions and our ecological footprint will be beneficial for society as it will result in continuous energy supply, preserved resources and new jobs. Green growth is already making good progress in various parts of the world, especially in emerging countries. As the utilities group with the most extensive international presence, GDF SUEZ is highly active in emerging regions where 80% of future energy needs are concentrated. The major projects developed by the Group are designed to address these needs and enable governments to implement energy policies capable of driving economic growth while avoiding the development of carbon-intensive infrastructure. 7 Balanced and pragmatic development Each GDF SUEZ project gives priority to industrial and environmental safety. As power-plant operator and services manager, the Group builds, runs and maintains facilities that fully comply with efficiency, reliability and security criteria, whether in nuclear generation, exploration and production of gas fields or the transportation and distribution of natural gas and heat. The Group focuses on the rigorous management of industrial risks and constant control of environmental impact in the implementation of all its activities. Its function as a public utility is guided by three conditions: guaranteed service continuity to clients; respect for or improvement of local residents surroundings; and the assurance of optimal working conditions for each employee. The Group s development strategy is built on a pragmatic approach. GDF SUEZ encourages long-term strategic partnerships and alliances with players from the industrial and financial sectors who share its values of drive and commitment, based on a common vision as well as geographical and operational synergy. 150 GW 17.5 GW of installed capacity by 2016 under construction GDF SUEZ. 8 Significant financial capacity Despite a challenging economic climate, GDF SUEZ has for several years pursued an ambitious investment plan. Between 2011 and 2013, it intends to invest a gross amount of 11 billion a year in new projects, including 30% to be spent on expanding its positions outside Europe, into high-growth areas. This program relies on extensive risk management and a strict and homogeneous investment allocation for all subsidiaries. The Group focuses its investments on projects with the most long-term visibility in countries with clearly defined regulatory, ethical and safety frameworks. For its international development, GDF SUEZ chooses to hedge a very significant proportion of its activities with long-term contracts that guarantee the volumes and prices of the electricity and gas sold. To finance its investments, GDF SUEZ relies on a best-in-class financial structure and a high level of cash flow. The Group streamlines its asset portfolio on a regular basis, with the intention of disposing of 10 billion s worth of non-strategic interests between 2011 and The Group s financial strength, confirmed by an A rating on the part of rating agencies, enables it in particular to provide a sustainable and competitive return to all its shareholders. 84.5bn in 2010 revenues 6 GDF SUEZ. 11 The promise of reliable power GDF SUEZ is currently the world s largest producer of non-nuclear energy. The Group is one of the leading European operators of combined-cycle power plants, which combine gas and steam turbines to generate electricity, and cogeneration plants for the supply of electricity and heat. In various parts of the world, it is also a major player in renewable energy, particularly hydroelectricity and wind power. The Group s electricity generation capacity relies on the association of all energy sources, whether renewable, fossil or nuclear. To develop a carbon-light production base, the Group takes into account the least polluting energy sources based on available resources and geographical characteristics of each country. This technological diversity allows GDF SUEZ to guarantee its customers an uninterrupted energy supply. The Group runs gigawatts of production capacity throughout the world. It has a further 17.5 gigawatts under construction, including 5.6 gigawatts of renewable energy. Investment in new capacity is supplemented by the reconversion of older power plants for example from coal to biomass to generate green power. Altogether, the Group aims to have 150 GW of installed capacity in 2016, of which 60% outside Europe. 1 No. independent power producer in the world GW of installed production capacity throughout the world GDF SUEZ. Group Portrait 9
12 The assurance of competitive natural gas GDF SUEZ has full command of the gas chain, from exploration & production to sales, including the management of regasification, storage, transportation and distribution infrastructure. As an integrated operator, it is able to run its natural-gas flows with maximum efficiency at all times, from upstream to downstream. In this way, the Group can adjust its sales to supply both end customers and its own power plants. One key expertise of the Group is the transportation of natural gas over long distances. Liquefied natural gas, of which the Group is the leading importer in Europe, provides great geographical flexibility in terms of access to resources which are a long distance from consumer countries. With its fleet of 17 LNG tankers, it routes 16.5 million tons of LNG throughout the year to regions where needs are the greatest. GDF SUEZ is not only the leading buyer of natural gas in Europe, it is also its leading seller of storage capacity. In order to guarantee an uninterrupted supply to its customers, the Group secures its supplies from major producer countries using flexible and competitive long-term contracts complemented by purchases on short-term markets. In total, the Group transports more than 110 billion m3 of gas each year, either over land or by sea No. No. buyer of natural gas in Europe operator of natural-gas transport and distribution networks in Europe GDF SUEZ. 15 Controlled energy consumption Energy and environmental efficiency services, of which GDF SUEZ is the leading supplier in Europe, respond to the needs of industrials and users to rationalize their energy consumption while guaranteeing or even improving their levels of performance or comfort. In the transition towards a low-carbon economy, energy services are one of the most efficient solutions to both reduce carbon emissions and energy bills while improving environmental impact. Like the development of alternative resources, energy efficiency contributes to the gradual implementation of less energy-intensive consumption and production methods by improving the profitability of installations while generating financial savings. By reducing its energy bill and promoting green energy, a company can meet both the expectations of its customers and regulatory obligations while retaining its competitiveness. Thanks to the synergy of its various activities, the Group is able to provide local authorities with integrated solutions for implementing their sustainable urban planning policies. One notable example is the design of new, carbon-light eco-districts, or of heating and cooling networks powered by a diversified energy mix, with an increasing use of local, renewable and recoverable energy sources. 1 No. supplier of energy and environmental efficiency services in Europe 180 heating and cooling networks managed in Europe GDF SUEZ. Group Portrait 13
16 Better exploited natural resources Through SUEZ Environnement, the Group addresses the needs of local authorities and industrial companies to reduce their water consumption, preserve the natural environment from pollutant discharges and to recycle, recover or dispose of their waste. Whether through water treatment or waste management, this GDF SUEZ specialized subsidiary delivers technological expertise that is constantly improved to match the increasing awareness of environmental issues and stricter environmental regulations. To meet the immense needs for infrastructure induced by their current growth, emerging countries favor a more sober economic development focused on the prevention of waste to take into account the depletion of natural resources at a local level. Reusing wastewater, especially for agricultural and industrial purposes, or desalinating seawater to obtain drinking water, are ways of reducing water stress in the most exposed regions of the planet. The shortage of non-renewable raw materials is encouraging a boom in sustainable methods of production and consumption, fostering a circular economy. The Group develops increasingly specialized solutions that help to reduce the taxpayer s bill by replacing natural resources with new sources of materials and energy extracted from waste and end-of-life products, thereby also avoiding their burial in landfills. 19 A fully embraced societal role GDF SUEZ considers social responsibility as an essential development factor within a fair company in which each person has the same opportunities to benefit from growth. The Group is an equal opportunities employer committed to fighting exclusion by seeking to integrate or rehabilitate the unemployed into the world of work. Its development model integrates tangible commitments between 2011 and To support its growth, the Group will hire 100,000 people worldwide, of which nearly half in France and more than 10,000 in Belgium. It associates all its employees with its growth through worldwide employee shareholding plans and free share allocation, the objective being to attribute 3% of the Group s capital to employees by Over the same period, two thirds of employees will be trained in safety issues, which is a priority for the Group. Since its creation, GDF SUEZ has also promoted gender equality as a key factor of its sustainable performance: in 2015, women will make up 25% of Group managers and 35% of high-potential managers. They will also account for 30% of new hires and one third of senior executive appointments. 100,000 35% new hires worldwide between 2011 and 2015 of women among high-potential managers in 2015 GDF SUEZ. Group Portrait 17
20 The duty of solidarity The civic commitment of GDF SUEZ is implemented on the ground through numerous corporate sponsorships and partnerships, often at the initiative of its employees. This desire to share is expressed through social and environmental outreach programs, especially in favor of children in distress and underprivileged populations, through the sponsoring of young entrepreneurs, support for sports-based educational initiatives and, since 1992, through the Group s Foundation. Since 2011, the Rassembleurs d Énergie (Energy Gatherers) program aims to work alongside governments and institutions in finding solutions for the millions of people still without energy or essential services in the world. A solidarity fund of 100 million has the main objective of financing access-to-energy projects in countries where the Group operates. At a local scale, the Group s employees also donate their free time to support projects for the installation of power-generation or water-supply systems throughout the world. At the same time, three associations comprising volunteers from the Group Aquassistance, Codegaz and EnergyAssistance provide aid to populations in distress by taking part in humanitarian projects throughout the year. 100M 2,000 of financing for long-term projects 18 GDF SUEZ.
