Energy for Development (e4d) The Importance of Communities Centric Mini Grids in Energy Access Professor AbuBakr S Bahaj Energy and Climate Change Division / Sustainable Energy Research Group Faculty of Engineering & the Environment University of Southampton, Southampton, SO17 1BJ United Kingdom Ireland UK France
Energy and development Energy for Development (e4d) aims to implement rural electrification projects as learning entities to support energy access geared to improve the living standards of the poor and provide pathways to growth in communities in rural Africa. To date the e4d programme has installed 6 community managed solar mini-grid systems in 3 countries in Africa
Energy and development The aims of the Energy for Development (e4d) programme are: a) Provide energy access to improve the living standard of the rural poor and b) Establish pathways to growth in rural communities in Africa. The concept is based on community managed solar mini-grids geared to invigorate communities through the provision of electrical power, clean water, micro financing and capacity building Power generation is through a solar PV system with battery storage, distributed through a mini-grid which connects all the buildings in the village centre. Businesses provide electrical charging facilities to the community mobile phones, batteries etc. All projects use prepayment meters facilitating reliable bill collection for the cooperative. The canopy holds the PV panels, provides shading and harvests rainwater (20k litre), which is sold by the cooperative to the villagers. Shipping containers provide office and meeting space for the cooperative/community as well as housing for the control and storage system of the PV array. The cooperative, based on an energy supply company which sits at the centre of the development, managing the project, receiving funds for its sustainability and provide micro financing for the community. All profit is re-invested into the project and the community. The cooperative oversees management, maintenance and expansion of the project. All buildings schools, health centres and businesses are directly connected to the minigrid, receiving reliable and affordable electricity, which extends opening hours and improves services to the community. In addition to schools, health centres, businesses and places of worship, the e4d projects benefit the wider community by providing electricity to outlying households via affordable rechargeable battery kits for lighting (removing the need for kerosene), radios, TVs etc. All connected buildings are capable of providing such services to the community.
Energy for rural communities 6 installed projects in Kenya (3), Uganda (2) and Cameroon (1) Oloika, Kenya Kitonyoni, Kenya Shompole, Kenya Bambouti, Cameroon Kyamugarura, Uganda Kanyegaramire, Uganda
Energy for rural communities KITONYONI, Kenya The 13.5kWp Kitonyoni cooperative project was the first to be installed fully funded by e4d. The project has provided valuable insight into village demand profiles, system performance and informed the next phases of the programme. The village has since seen accelerated development with over 15 new buildings and businesses, a new maternity unit and cooperative micro-financing schemes open to all the community. The cooperative continues to manage the project independently with great success, benefitting over 3000 people. 7 Energy for rural communities OLOIKA, Kenya Oloika is a Maasai village in the south of Kenya with a surrounding population of over 5000 people. They benefit from the electricity produced from the 13.5kWp solar PV installation with battery storage as well as the rain harvesting system. Power is delivered through a mini-grid to all the 70 buildings in the village. The project is jointly funded by e4d and REA and is managed by a cooperative which is vital for the success of the project. 8 Energy for rural communities SHOMPOLE, Kenya Shompole is also a Maasai village close to Oloika in the south of Kenya. A smaller 8.4kWp system was installed with battery storage. This is a joint project with Kenya Rural Electrification Authority (REA) but fully managed by a cooperative like all of e4d s projects. The mini-grid currently connects 30 of the businesses in the market centre, with the cooperative looking at ways to increase the entrepreneurship activity in the area. Oloika restaurant using e4d power at night Community engagement is fundamental to project success and sustainability
Energy for rural communities Kanyegaramire, western Uganda, is a market centre with over 100 businesses and a local area population of approximately 5000 people. A 13.5kWp solar mini-grid was installed with battery storage and room for expansion. A borehole was installed as part of the project and the electricity used for water Oloika restaurant using e4d power at night pumping. The Ugandan Rural Electrification Agency is a partner in the project. KANYEGARAMIRE, Uganda Power (W) The cooperative structure is a successful management model and is essential for the sustainability and running of the project for the benefit of the community Kanyegaramire Power Plant
Energy for rural communities KYAMUGARURA, Uganda Kyamugarura is a small market centre, located in Uganda s Kyenjojo district a tropical environment. Currently 60 businesses are connected to the 13.5kWp e4d mini-grid. The project is in collaboration with Uganda Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and was set up in the same fashion as those in Kenya with a cooperative having full management responsibility for the running, maintenance and expansion of the project. Oloika restaurant using e4d power at night Kyamugarura solar plant and distribution network, which connects all 60 businesses in the village
Energy for rural communities BAMBOUTI, Uganda Bambouti, eastern Cameroon, has a population of 750 people. The e4d programme partnered with Cameroon Catalyst, a students organisation from the University of Southampton, and installed a 6kWp solar mini-grid in the village centre, which serves the local health centre and provides a solar power hub. Entrepreneurship activity has since increased and the health centre is now using a fridge to keep vaccinations cool. Oloika restaurant using e4d power at night Bambouti community members help with the installation Bambouti solar plant
Rural communities view "Previously I needed assistance using a kerosene lamp or I would hold a torch/mobile phone using my mouth. But now I can do deliveries 24 hours a day alone if needed. Now mothers are coming from far, as they know Kitonyoni has power and now we have around 8 deliveries per month, before we would have a maximum of 4. Mercy Twili, Kitonyoni Health Centre, Chief Nurse
Rural communities view "My business now consists of a TV, speakers and a DVD for entertainment. I use the TV to show football games. There is also phone charging and a printer. I have seen the number of customers in my business increase and a doubling on my profit. Stephen Mwikya, Kitonyoni Business Owner
Rural communities view "We now have early morning and evening classes and we have recorded higher educational achievements by the pupils. The school ranking has improved considerably. Access to electricity has added a huge value in our education, its delivery and pupils learnt more about the clean electricity from the project! Josphat Kalanzo, Kitonyoni Primary School Head Teacher
