1 Hybrid Systems ABO Wind develops and builds energy systems combining wind turbines, photovoltaic plants and storage units to help stabilise grids and reduce carbon emissions in developing countries.
2 Grid Stability Tanzania Stabilising and extending long distribution lines with the help of renewables Core Issue Many developing and newly industrialised countries rely on extremely large electricity distribution networks that operate at the limit of voltage stability. As a result, the power fed into the grid can suffer huge losses on the way to the consumers. In conventional electrical distribution systems centralised station generators supply power to distributed customers. This often leads to a reduced electrical output that is much lower than theoretically possible. Frequent blackouts and an unstable electrical supply are the consequences. Solution In a recent project in Tanzania, ABO Wind demonstrated that extremely large distribution networks, operating at the limit of voltage stability and experiencing substantial distribution constraints, can be stabilised using photovoltaic plants in combination with energy storage systems at distributed perimeter stations. With the help of renewables, it is possible to minimise cable-losses. This is an eco-friendly and cost-effective option, which helps to prevent critical supply situations. Not only can this stabilise the existing network, but the combination of renewables and storage units can also help to enlarge it. Typical distribution line in Tanzania P 80% P 50% P 80% P 75% Supplier Grid Operator Consumer Lower transmission costs Increased revenues from additional PV power input Improved reliability Improved reputation Enhanced grid performance Improved voltage stability Reduced expenses for grid expansion Increased transmission capacity Reliable access to electricity Lower electricity prices Cleaner air and less pollution from diesel gensets Progressing electrification in new areas Less blackouts
3 Diesel Substitution in Mini Grids ABO Wind is working to reduce the dependance on existing diesel generation and the praxis of unsafe handling of diesel barrels. Tanzania Reducing costs and emissions of a diesel-fueled mini grid by implementing renewable energy Core Issue Currently two old diesel generator sets feed into an island grid in the Lindi district in eastern Tanzania. The generation cost of one kilowatt hour at the local power plant ranges from 0.28 USD to 0.35 USD. The expensive, ineffective system relies on diesel, which has to be carted to the facility over long distances. Solution Between July 2016 and June 2017 the facility generated an electrical output of 2.47 GWh. Adding renewable energy to the mix will reduce long-term costs for raw materials and logistics, and it will decrease the dependency on fossil fuels and carbon emissions. Therefore, ABO Wind is currently working on the integration of a 400 kwp photovoltaic (PV) system which will feed into into the Liwale grid as a first step. The PV system generates about 600,000 kwh of clean energy per year, thus susbstituting 184,000 liters of diesel, and about 25% of the energy demand. Depending on the price of diesel, the investment in the system will be recouped within aproximentaly five years. 4 Small and Medium Offgrid Enterprises Uganda Optimising the energy supply of small and medium offgrid enterprises with solar and wind energy, and storage units Core Issue Many small and medium enterprises in Uganda are not connected to the grid and rely completely on a diesel-based self-supply. They suffer from high generation and maintenance costs for extremely noisy and polluting mechanical and electrical offgrid systems. Solution Hybrid energy systems based on solar and wind energy combined with storage units are key to increasing profitability and decreasing carbon footprints. A cost-effective, clean energy supply can help increase production capacities. ABO Wind individually designs solutions to modularly extend the supply to meet the needs of a growing energy demand. Hybrid systems not only can supply small and medium enterprises with clean energy, but also the surrounding villages. 6 About ABO Wind Founded in 1996, the German-based company ABO Wind develops and realises renewable energy projects worldwide. So far, ABO Wind has installed wind farms, solar parks and biogas plants with a total capacity of about 1,400 megawatts. The 450 employees in 20 different office locations are realising projects with an annual investment volume of about 300 million Euros. The core principle of ABO Wind s international activities is to open local offices and hire local staff from the very beginning. ABO Wind develops commercial projects and local expertise at the same time. Both sides complement each other: where local colleagues foster local ties, knowledge and contacts, they acquire land and projects; supported by ABO Wind s international technical, financial and legal expertise necessary to successfully create and deliver renewable energy projects. Current ABO Wind projects Let s discuss your ideas and projects.
