A leader in recycling and caring for the environment since 1927 Our Green Story Presentation to Packaging Optimization Summit May 15, 2013
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Environmental Leadership A Core Value
The Beer Store is a global leader that takes back ALL the packaging materials that it sells and more keeping materials out of landfill
It al l st ar t ed 85 year s ago! Serving 5 Generations of Ontario Beer Drinkers TBS began operations in 1927 as Brewers Warehousing Ltd.
Returning your empties became part of Ontario s beer culture as soon as our doors opened for business. 54 Brands Age 21 2 /bottle deposit $3.88 for a two-four
For years returning your empties was easy. Remember the old stubby standard bottle? (cans weren t introduced until the early 60 s)
Today Returning Empties is so different In 2007 The Beer Store empties expanded to include all wine and spirit containers Deposits ($.10/container) applied to all beer containers Refillable containers returned to brewers; one-way containers are recycled All TBS beer packaging (cartons, trays, shrink wrap, crowns, plastic bags, paper bags, etc.) is returnable TBS also takes back all beer packaging sold by LCBO There is no taxpayer subsidy 1.86 Billion containers (94%) returned in 2008/ Billion containers collected 300 Million ODRP containers collected Compared to Did you Know? We take in over 4,000 returned containers every minute of every day. A Hummingbird whose wings flap at an average of 3,000 flaps per minute.
How are we Doing?
Transparency Reporting our performance for all to see
TBS Returns system exemplifies many of the OECD strategies related to Materials Management: Supports the industry use of refillable containers Generates higher return rates than alternate systems thereby maximizing the energy benefits and pollution reductions associated with material recycling Sustains high-value recycling outcomes for collected materials
Outcomes for 2012 > > > > Beer Containers 1.81 Billion Containers collected > 275, 852 tonnes glass bottle re-use by brewers Over 372,0000 tonnes of packaging diverted from landfills > 22,234 tonnes clear glass recycled into new glass bottles 94% of all beer containers sold collected for re-sue or highend value-added recycling 24,450 corrugated cardboard and boxboard recycled into paper products > 7,904 tonnes aluminum cans recycled into new aluminum > 38, 446 tones coloured glass recycled into new glass bottles or other glass products > > > Wine and Spirit Containers Over 300 million containers collected > 24,250 tonnes clear glass recycled into new glass bottels Over 108,000 tonnes of packaging diverted from landfills > 82,727 tonnnes coloured glass recycled into new glass bottles or other glass products 81% of wine and spirit containters collected for high-end recycling > 837 tonnes of aluminum cans recycled into new aluminum

We ve increased efficiency through education 2.5 million booklets handed out at 440 retail stores in the Spring of Goals: - Decrease 20% gap in ODRP returns - make the returns process more efficient for customers and staff GREENER.One Container at a Time
We continue to inform a key to our success April Campaign
We ve aligned with Strategic Environmental Partners.working together in conservation efforts
We strive to be Innovative Looking at ways to integrate recycling efforts with other organizations A new recycling depot located in west GTA to take back alcohol containers and other household recyclables. Working with SIMS and Orange Drop.
How are our collective efforts helping our communities?
Leveraging Empties to raise funds for local charities
Giving Back - reaching out to others in need They won t care how much you know until they know how much you care. The Beer Store union (UFCW) and its employees generously give their time to raise funds for worthy causes. Over 2,800 volunteers make this work.
Helping local neighborhoods with self-improvement efforts.
Extending the message In our retail stores, our trucks, our website and social media
We re proud of our accomplishments Recycling is part of our Heritage. it s part of our Green DNA. On December 13, 2010, the One Billionth Liquor container was returned to The Beer Store under the Bag It Back program the highly successful deposit return program for wine, spirit and beer containers sold through LCBO and Ontario winery stores
And so are many others. the deposit return system is efficient, saves energy and reduces the strain on municipal recycling programs The Conservation Council of Ontario It s time businesses across the province follow The Beer Store s lead and turn their talk about waste diversion into real action The David Suzuki Foundation
