2 Environmental mission statement Design for environment Our knowledge and our solutions are helping to create a better world. We have a responsibility to the wider community and we are committed to environmental protection. In our global operations, featuring a great diversity of processes, products and services, our company is concerned with sustaining the natural resources essential to life. We view the economy, environmental protection and social responsibility as three key factors carrying equal weight in a liberal world market. We support the dissemination of knowledge needed for sustainable development through the transfer of knowledge in the fields of management and technology, wherever we operate as a company. Ecological design is nothing new at Siemens. The company published its in-house standard SN 3635 on environmentally compatible product design in 1993, and since then this standard has been an integral part of our product planning and development process. Among other things, it calls for use of separate and distinct material fractions, ease of disassembly, a reduction in the number of components per product, durability, low energy requirements during manufacture and day-to-day use, and the avoidance of hazardous substances. It also lists minimum requirements regarding the pa - ra meters to be described in environmental declarations. This standard and our system of environmental management enable us to take a holistic and all-encompassing approach to environmental protection spanning the entire product life cycle from product planning to end-of-life recycling and disposal. We also work with product-specific guidelines that refine the requirements outlined in SN For us, sustainable development in environmental protection means careful use of natural resources, which is why we assess possible environmental impacts in the early stages of product and process development. It is our aim to avoid pollution altogether or to reduce it to a minimum, above and beyond statutory requirements. 2

3 Lower energy consumption The challenge Open-pit mining is a very energy-intensive process. Huge quantities of electricity and diesel are required to move the enormous weights of stone, ore and coal involved. Direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions are correspondingly high. Due to the long-term consequences this has on the climate, operating companies are required to rethink their ideas, and introduce new processes with more energy-efficient drives. Advantages for the environment Haul trucks use less diesel with better performance Shovel and dragline excavators use less electricity Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced The solution Siemens offers several solutions for raising energy efficiency in discontinuous transport. SIMINE TR: The drive concept for optimal control of s in haul trucks provides powerful acceleration and a high working speed together with low fuel consumption, and thus lower greenhouse gas emissions. SIMINE SH: The drive concept for controlling s in shovels provides fast operation and high productivity combined with lower operating costs and energy savings. SIMINE DRAG: The drive concept for gearless s in dragline excavators eliminates the need for a gearbox. This increases productivity and efficiency while, at the same time, reducing operating costs and energy requirements.
